California Doing California Things

There should be a law against combining certain food groups, like vegetables with sweets. Would you pour chocolate sauce on an ear of corn and eat it?
Mole sauce contains chocolate and vegetably things like chili peppers, onions and garlic.

I've had some versions of elotes that you would definitely not like. I can't recall chocolate dipped ones exactly, but sweets? Por cierto. The trick is to also make it spicy as hell.
Sweet and spicy is a classic combo, and not just in México.

Mole sauce? Is that like Gopher gravy that Granny on The Beverley Hillbillies used to make?

Seriously though, I've had mole sauce. It's just OK, IMHO. Never liked it enough to order it in a restaurant.

Yams and sweet potatoes are not the same thing.
Sweet potatoes (which are not potatoes either, although they are in the same family) are sometimes known as "yams", especially in the US. That is probably because these batatas reminded African slaves of the actual yams from back home.
WHY? They’re phenomenally good, especially with marshmallows.
Why enhance the sweetness of the batatas with even more sugar from the marshmallows? My preferred preparation is to balance the sweetness with some heat, e.g. by seasoning them with cayenne powder along with salt and pepper. Makes for great fries.

I've had mole sauce.
Given that 'mole' means 'sauce', this is a redundant tautology that is correctly true and unavoidably inevitable.
The general-purpose word for sauce is salsa. Mole does also come from the word for sauce (in the Aztec language) but in modern Spanish it refers a more specific class of sauces, all of them sweet-spicy-nutty as described. Would not recommend ordering a mole of any kind if you don't like sweets with your onions.

It is true that it is a tad redundant to say mole sauce though, as there are no moles that aren't sauces (except for mole de olla, which is a dessert soup that sort of tastes like a mole).

The derail on the food is more interesting and informative than the original thread.

People's tastes can be so strange to others
It's only a derail if Californians don't eat food; Otherwise it fits perfectly with:

My experience is that Americans seem to like their food much sweeter than I find pleasant. But each to their own.

You guys are weird.

I am overly sensitive to bitter tastes and I cannot help but always be overwhelmed by bitter in coffee, Brussels sprouts and IPAs no matter how well prepared/great quality, etc.
Coffee should be hung, drawn and quartered and never mentioned again in polite company
I wish it was not so but!

I hate sweet on my vegetables!

I am somewhat addicted to chocolate, the darker the better. Apparently chocolate overrides my over-sensitive bitter tastebuds.
(y) 70-75% dark whilst watching the footy is a good way to pass the time.
NYT has a wonderful recipe for Chocolate Coffee Whiskey cake. If you use a private browser you can get around the paywall.

The recipe also includes cloves Abd black pepper. Sounds awful, right? Especially if you hate coffee and whiskey like I do.

It is not. It is truly delicious.

Most posts have been far more political than edible.

I’ve never seen it offered as a stand-alone dish in a restaurant.
FWIW it has chocolate in it.

Nonsense.

Generally, one does not just order a bowl of mole sauce. Its part of a main dish, like chicken mole.

Having fervently held and vigorously defended positions on food is definitely a popular Californian pasttime, bonus points if the cuisine is foreign or otherwise obscure. Alas, Mexican doesn't count, unless it's something specific we don't often make here.

True, though if a restaurant makes a good salsa or sopa or something, it is actually pretty common and tolerated for Mexican families to order a tub of it to go. I was at a Mayan place on the coast recently and spotted a family leaving with a baby stroller packed to the gills with food, sides, sauces. The actual kid had been relegated to a shoulder carry.

Brussels sprouts done right are a favorite of mine. Halved and roasted, with Parmesan melted over them … I have a sweet tooth, but slso a bitter tooth!
Both my wife and I hate Brussels sprouts. She calls them gaga sprouts.
