Climate Change(d)?

I might not need to be raking leaves after fucking Xmas this year!

I have bigass green tomatoes… I’ll be harvesting in November, and that ain’t right!
When the orange buffoon was elected I took a picture out the front door and posted it as even God was crying about the results. (Note that I live in a desert, 4"/yr average rainfall.) Somebody noticed a "dead" plant in a pot--nope, died back for the winter, not dead. I have noticed the same plants are nowhere near "dead" by election time these days.

So … Phoenix?
Phoenix is very hot but still survivable if you have enough water.

The deadly point is believed to be 95F wet bulb and in those who are more vulnerable deaths will be seen before this point. (Mengele didn't study this so we don't have good data.) The hot places are normally dry places and stay below the lethal point--but they come close. Even if you are in the shade and inactive your body temperature will rise once that threshold is crossed--and you don't have too much margin before it's too much.

Mainly it takes knowledge. Won't knowledge or its lack be a big variable in the post-apocalyptic world? Will anyone be able to read books anyway?
Most people at the start of the Iron Age couldn't read books.

Even into the Medieval era, most people couldn't read and write, and even when they could, they didn't write down how to make iron and steel, because that was a secret kept entirely to the guild members who did it. The information was passed by practical hands-on training of apprentices, who were certainly not required to read about it.

Most medieval writings were religion, law, and politics - practical knowledge wasn't safe to write down in an era before intellectual property law.
They were also pretty bad at writing about the stuff Everybody Knows(tm). Sometime, it's the outsiders who provide the most valuable information. In Central and Eastern Europe in the second half of the Early Medieval period (9th-11th centuries), an area that was in the process of being christianized and penetrated by writing, but was significantly less urban, less firmly Christian, less influenced by classical antiquity then the Frankish core or the Mediterranean, we do find local written sources in Latin, Old High German, Greek, Church Slavonic. They talk about the funding myths of the royal dynasty, or about how much land between rivers x and y the duke has allocated to this and that monastery, or they are prayers or ceasefire agreements.

If you want to learn about how people treated their slaves, in what kind of family unit they lived, what was their staple food, or whether the people living in huts and the people living in longhouses were different ethnicities or just social classes, you better freshen up your Arabic because, if at all, you'll only find that kind of information in the reports of merchants and envoys from Syria and Al-Andalus.

Climate change may seem minor as yet, with average temperatures only about 1°C warmer. Problems are most visible "at the margins." For example, a few species will be decimated, while others take their place. And even these decimations may pass almost unnoticed if the species contributes little to human economy. Hence the interest in Snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) population, which supports a fishery industry in Alaska.

Reported in https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf6035 linked to by Yahoo news https://news.yahoo.com/billions-crabs-went-missing-around-180012346.html

The snow crab is an iconic species in the Bering Sea that supports an economically important fishery and undergoes extensive monitoring and management. Since 2018, more than 10 billion snow crab have disappeared from the eastern Bering Sea, and the population collapsed to historical lows in 2021. We link this collapse to a marine heatwave in the eastern Bering Sea during 2018 and 2019. Calculated caloric requirements, reduced spatial distribution, and observed body conditions suggest that starvation played a role in the collapse. The mortality event appears to be one of the largest reported losses of motile marine macrofauna to marine heatwaves globally.

Before some smart-aleck suggests that the crabs be invited down to Santa Monica, note that the snow crab thrives in very cold waters.

What a load of codswallop.

Marine heatwaves, a component of our impact on the Earth’s climate

Oh really? It’s baffling that people think earth’s climate never changes or fluctuates unless it’s “our” doing.

used survey data to model the potential drivers of the decline in this ecologically and commercially important species.

Modeling is not science. Also, “potential”!!?? Lol.

and observed body conditions suggest that starvation played a role in the collapse.

“Suggest”?!! Lol. The usual weasel word bingo; suggest, maybe, perhaps, appears to, potentially.

It was a catastrophic 79 degrees in Santa Monica yesterday. Oh the humanity!!

It’s baffling that people think earth’s climate never changes or fluctuates unless it’s “our” doing.
It's baffling that people still persist in using this strawman argument.
And the only reason those people believe that the climate has changed in the past is because climate scientists have told them, the same scientists who are now telling them that anthropogenic climate change is real. I guess you only need to believe the experts when what they say is what you already decided you want to hear.

You don't need a scientist to tell you reservoirs are low and rain scars=ce, and glaciers are dispersing.

You need scientific studies to know that the rate of loss of insects and other life at the bottom of the food chain and ecosystem is acceleration.

II the insect loss gets big enough it will affect us humans.

Ocean coral reeds are in troubl form heat and pollution. They are the ocean nurseries. Big fish eat little fish, bigger fish eat big fish...humans eat salmon a major global source of protein. Bo ;itte fish a the bottom and no big fish at he top.

Maybe 20 years ago I listened to a UW report on global warming of lakes.

Here in Lake Washington there is an algae bloom triggered by temperature,. The bloom feeds small fish that salmon prey fish feed on. Rising lake temperature causes the bloom to occur earlier. When spawning salmon arrive the peak prey fish time is past.

Puget Sound Orcas have long been in trouble from diminished salmon populations. Some are predicting extinction of the local population.

The idea that we are not connected to te ecosystem is being shown wrong. The Genesis based idea that god gave the Earth to humans to exploit.

Modeling is not science.
No. But modelling is.

How many times do I need to tell you?? We've* got more nuclear weapons than you guys; OUR FRB bank in New York City has a stranglehold on world finance; etc. Simply put, the Sun HAS set on the British Empire. Your great-grandchildren will laugh at your insistence on spelling 'color' with a 'U', or 'modeling' with a double 'LL.'

* - I use the first-person "we" based on my passport. I have zero intention of ever setting foot in post-rational Amerika again.

How many times to I need to tell you?? We've* got more nuclear weapons than you guys
Meh. I have no children, so my great grandchildren will not be laughing at anything.

And I shall continue to spell in accordance with Oxford until and unless the devotees of Simplified English employ those nuclear weapons to prevent me from so doing.

As a B-61 nuclear bomb is about 3.6 metres long and masses around 324kg, I would suggest you just hit me over the head with one, rather than detonating it, so as to minimise collateral damage.

Take heart Swami, China is working hard to replace the USA and the dollar as the international currency. They may succeed.

I believe you said you live Taialnd? A utopia of democracy and civil rights?

The word order such as it is allows you to travel freely to countries and gamble in casinos. The international monetary system allows you to fly to a casino make money if you win, and bank it securely, and access your money anywhere in the world.

There are always plosives and negates to any large scale human system. That ti works as well as it does om such a large scale is a bit of a miracle.

The anti American and anti global order conspiracy theorists have yet to offer any practical alternative.

They whine and rant, yet enjoy the befits without reservation.

I regret that you interpreted my post as a threat. I don't even have the codes to arm nuclear weapons (the codes I bought at Mar-a-Lago have been superceded I hope). Anyway, while it's true that I am easily annoyed and not overly forgiving, spelling variations do not make my Lengthy List of Peeves. In fact it is already hypocritical of me to object to your doubled-L: I have my own ideas about spelling, sometimes add the "Oxford U" just to appear pompous and/or pretentious; and have even been known to deploy the Oxford comma. And if you've scrutinized my posts (as you should) you're aware that I frequently add hyphens condoned neither by Oxford nor Webster's; fully aware that these hyphens are not prescribed but because I like them and I'm my own man. How's that for candour?

Thus I'm afraid I must treat your request to be head-conked by a 700-pound B-61 as just another masochist's cry for help. If you join me here at the Rose of the North, as a favour I can take you to a parlour which offers the Seven-Flavour Remedy using handcuffs and hot candle-wax. It will have you clamouring for mercy within an hour.

Catching up.

Embracing FDR's Spirit and Progressive Demand, Biden Unveils American Climate Corps
Inspired by the New Deal's popular Civilian Conservation Corps—a popular decade-long program that employed millions of young men—the Biden administration's American Climate Corps (ACC) will establish a paid training program with the goal of providing "pathways to high-quality, good-paying clean energy and climate resilience jobs in the public and private sectors," according to a White House fact sheet.

The administration estimates that the program, established via executive action, will train more than 20,000 Americans, "putting them to work conserving and restoring our lands and waters, bolstering community resilience, deploying clean energy, implementing energy-efficient technologies, and advancing environmental justice."

...
A number of federal agencies will be involved in supporting and implementing the new program, including the Department of Labor, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Energy, and AmeriCorps.

The Biden administration also announced Wednesday that "five new states—Arizona, Utah, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Maryland—are moving forward with state-based climate corps that are funded through public-private partnerships, including AmeriCorps, which will work with the American Climate Corps as implementing collaborators to ensure young people across the country are serving their communities."

Other states, including California, Maine, and Michigan, have already established climate corps programs.

Sunrise on American Climate Corps: We Turned a Generational Rallying Cry into a Real Jobs Program | Common Dreams
Three years ago, I sat on then Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders' Unity Climate Task Force and shared one of Sunrise Movement’s top priorities for the future Administration – a Civilian Climate Corps, a visionary jobs program to put thousands of young people to work in real career pathways fighting for their future.

Now, after years of demonstrating and fighting for a Climate Corps, we turned a generational rallying cry into a real jobs program that will put a new generation to work stopping the climate crisis. With the ACC and the historic climate investments won by our broader movement, the path towards a Green New Deal is beginning to become visible.
The American Climate Corps EXPLAINED - Sunrise Movement
Acknowledging its original name, the Civilian Climate Corps, a homage to the Civilian Conservation Corps of the New Deal.
The American Climate Corps is a visionary new policy that will employ and train tens of thousands of young people in good-paying jobs to stop the climate crisis. That’s right – any person in this country, regardless of their background or education level, can work for our government, conserving America’s lands and waters, bolstering community resilience to climate disaster, restoring wetlands and so much more.

...
In fact, this is a major change from recent climate and energy policy. Right now, many of our climate laws are designed to give corporations tax breaks for being more green as a way of stopping the greatest threat of our time. The American Climate Corps takes a new approach – it directly invests in people and projects that will pay us directly to strengthen our communities and begin the clean energy transition. This is the government taking an active approach to designing the workforce of the future and averting climate catastrophe – not just leaving it up to the markets, who we can’t rely on alone to cut carbon emissions or reach our climate goals.

...
If you remember, this is just the kind of thing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt did in the 1930’s. When the US was in crisis, FDR launched a Civilian Conservation Corps – a national public work relief program that employed over three million workers repairing and conserving the United States forests, parks, and natural resources. It pulled millions out of unemployment and drastically improved our nation’s natural infrastructure during the lows of the Great Depression. It had deep flaws – like solely hiring white men and nonconsensual development on stolen Native American land – but that’s why this time around, the modern Corps will be deeply rooted in equity and equality, and will invest directly in marginalized communities facing the worst of the climate crisis.
There were some "She-She-She" female ones, but not many.
In 2020, Sunrise’s Executive Director, Varshini Prakash, pulled up a seat at the Biden-Sanders Unity Task Force on climate and made our generation’s call heard. In 2021, we launched a massive campaign for federal jobs, pushing our leaders in Congress and in the White House. And in partnership with our allies on the Hill – Senator Ed Markey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – we made our idea of a Civilian Climate Corps real, legislative text.

'Damning' Probe Finds 80% of Top Carbon Offset Schemes Are 'Likely Junk or Worthless'
noting
Revealed: top carbon offset projects may not cut planet-heating emissions | Carbon offsetting | The Guardian
The vast majority of the environmental projects most frequently used to offset greenhouse gas emissions appear to have fundamental failings suggesting they cannot be relied upon to cut planet-heating emissions, according to a new analysis.

...
It works by carbon offset credits being tradable “allowances” or certificates that allows the purchaser to compensate for 1 ton of carbon dioxide or the equivalent in greenhouse gases by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions.

...
  • A total of 39 of the top 50 emission offset projects, or 78% of them, were categorised as likely junk or worthless due to one or more fundamental failing that undermines its promised emission cuts.
  • Eight others (16%) look problematic, with evidence suggesting they may have at least one fundamental failing and are potentially junk, according to the classification system applied.
  • The efficacy of the remaining three projects (6%) could not be determined definitively as there was insufficient public, independent information to adequately assess the quality of the credits and/or accuracy of their claimed climate benefits.
  • Overall, $1.16bn (£937m) of carbon credits have been traded so far from the projects classified by the investigation as likely junk or worthless; a further $400m of credits bought and sold were potentially junk.
The 50 most popular global projects include forestry schemes, hydroelectric dams, solar and wind farms, waste disposal and greener household appliances schemes across 20 (mostly) developing countries ...

BREAKING: President Biden announced he’s formally establishing an American Climate Corps!!! … | Instagram
One picture shows such politicians as Sen. Ed Markey MA and Reps. AOC NY, and Joe Neguse CO proposing a Civilian Climate Corps.

Wow - @aoc just gave one of the most powerful climate speeches ever... Do the world a favor, please share this video far and wide, everyone needs to hear it. | Instagram

AOC criticized the Biden Admin for a record number of fossil-fuel leases. Then saying that climate activism has started to loosen the grip that fossil-fuel companies have had on our politics. "Don't let the cynics win", she says. Then saying that we organize out of hope and commitment and love and the beauty of our future "and we will not give up".

(last month)
Today, … | Instagram
Today, we celebrate the creation of the American Climate Corps — a win for Americans, our future and our planet.

This victory is the culmination of more than two years of organizing, and it cannot be overstated how much this victory belongs to our youth organizers.

In April 2021, Senator Markey and I introduced The Civilian Climate Corps Act of 2021, alongside @sunrisemvmt.

The American Climate Corps, which will be focused on training 20,000 young people in the growing fields of clean energy, conservation and climate resilience, is just a first step toward a CCC. Moving forward, I’m excited to work with the administration to ensure the American Climate Corps is a program that also works with the EPA, that it prioritizes environmental justice communities, that it pays living wages, and that it ensures that new green jobs are union jobs.
