Conservatives freaking out over the removal of Aunt Jemima

Hmm, never heard of the boob trick. But it's real.

The problem conservatives have with the removal for Aunt Jemima from syrup bottles is it demonstrates how their influence in American society is shrinking. This is the same reaction we get when a big corporation puts a same sex couple in their advertising.

One can be for the latter and against the former. It's not as clear cut as liberal vs. conservative. The latter can be described as truly liberal, while the former is not.

Anyway you want to spin it is fine, but the reality is, corporate management does not think alienating conservatives is a great risk. The market has spoken.

So now it's okay to harass leprechauns?? I don't think so. I identify with the struggle Lepro-Americans have made in this country. Every year some 200 of them are mulch-mowed to death while 'walking Leprechaun'. Do you hear about this on the news? I don't. Tucker Carlson laughs about their 'tiny entitlements.'
You know, they invented the rainbow flag.

Anyone remember Safeway's "Scotch Buy" store brand back in the early '80's? Me and my roommates in college would buy it as it was inexpensive and we didn't have jobs. I guess its a step up from "Jew Buy". It was discontinued after a couple of years. A bit odd they would pull it off the market, as racism towards white people is not generally recognized. :)

It's not clear that racism was the reason for the disappearance of that brand. Safeway has had a number of private brand labels that they have discarded over the years.

There was a time when conservatives felt big corporations represented them and their values. They realized this loss first with corporate media, which was the first target of their outrage. Now, their market place power is so small, no one in the boardroom worries about "conservative backlash."
This X 1,000!

But the people are 'Scots,' not 'Scotch.'
Scotch refers to things FROM Scotland. Made there, invented there, a style originating there.
Thus, no racism in Scotch Tape, Scotch Whiskey, Scotch Eggs...

The Aunt Jemima brand was created in 1889 by Chris Rutt and Charles Underwood, two white men, to market their ready-made pancake flour. The origin of the company's imagery and branding is steeped in racist stereotypes symbolizing submissiveness and asexuality, Riché Richardson wrote in The New York Times.

Do the ignorant posters in this thread who are defending this racist symbol not realize that the first woman who was used to represent this character was a former slave. Do you realize that the original character was used to imply that black female slaves who cooked for their masters were just happy, sloppy people who had were perfectly content to be slaves?

The origin of the Aunt Jemima brand is rooted in the old Southern plantation stereotypes of the "mammy" — a figure portrayed as a devoted servant, according to The New York Times.

Most black women get it because they are the ones being portrayed in these stupid stereotypes, while plenty of white people just don't get it. I discussed this with a black female earlier today and she told me it was about time that this character was being discontinued. Quaker Oats claims that they tried to change the image of Aunt Jemima over the years but they finally realize that you just can't change a racist symbol by dressing it up a bit.

The thing I don't get is why any white person gives a.shit when a company decides to do away with a controversial symbol that should have been ended a long time ago. Aren't there better things to be outraged over?

It's not the symbol. It's that people who have been against the synmbol for years appear to suddenly have the power to make changes happen. That's scsry freaking shit. That they have power, or clout, or influence, and they know it. Which means they WILL use it.

So, naturally, some people will try to talk them out of using it, before they start changing things that are really important. Wages, voting, designated hitter, representation....

According to this report (https://minnesotareformer.com/2020/04/15/land-olakes-quietly-gets-rid-of-iconic-indian-maiden/),

Then there’s the “boob trick” in which you can make the packaging even more disrespectful by turning Mia’s knees into her boobs. “Something lots of dads teach their kids,” one YouTuber noted...

I very much doubt that the artist was intending a "boob trick". Then again way back in Middle School I learned how to fold a dollar bill so it says "tited states of america" and "tender and private".

Next target - Hillbilly Bread.

Except the hillbilly concept and stereotype was created entirely by white people about white people. So, not remotely similar.

Upper class city people denigrating lower class rural people. It is definitely a class issue, the fact that the skin color is the same is coincidental.
