Covid-19 miscellany

In other news, Louisiana is discovering that people who were previously infected with COVID and were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, are not well protected against the Delta variant.
(Another right wing trope that has served as an excuse to forego vaccination, bites the dust.)
In that state, pediatric infection rates have also risen exponentially, from 4% testing positive to 24% in just a few months.
Can you please cite the Louisiana claim?

Came from Mark Thomas, Deputy Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. TV interview - either NPR or MSNBC (I wasn't noting which).

Have there been vaccines which appeared fine initially but then had long term effects?

It's not just vaccines. From make-up to food additives, from pain relievers to insulin shots, almost everything gets a long, expensive, study on risk management in different groups. This vaccine didn't, exactly. Luckily, it was a bit of a retread of already tested medical technology.

Honestly, I didn't race in for the shot. I knew I was low risk, both of suffering and of spreading. I was eligible the first of March, didn't get it until May. My m-i-l is very different, she's got tons of "underlying conditions". And she'd be out, going to church, doing family stuff, shopping with her girlfriends, almost every day. The lockdown was hell for her.
She raced in to get jabbed immediately. I held off a bit.
I knew that the vaccine was being raced into production, a political football of the most dangerous president in living memory. I'm sure that if Trump could score a few political points and make a few bucks cutting corners on safety, he absolutely would. Even just a few months after the rollout, I felt a lot more confident trusting the vaccines. So I did.

But the information is now out there. For the vast majority of people, refusing the vaccine is an ill-informed political stance, unsupported by science or statistics.

People making "political" choices when it comes to medical procedures are demonstrating that they do not possess the ability to make informed choices. In this thread that fact is made obvious by the lack of any response to my questions concerning Typhoid Mary and her "freedoms."

Gov. DeSantis (C-19), has indicated he will be withholding funding to the school districts in the amount of the monthly salary of those on the School Boards for the counties that enacted mask mandates, unless they provide an opt-out option.

It gets better. Remember how Florida is sitting on death certificates? Well...
article said:
As part of the order, Florida's Commissioner of Education is also requiring the districts' superintendents to certify a report regarding enforcement of a mask mandate. That report should document "any instance" of enforcing the "unlawful face cover mandate policy."

That includes "instances of a student being sent home, reassigned, disciplined, suspended, isolated, stigmatized, warned or harassed because of the student's failure to comply" with the policies of the Broward and Alachua mandates, according to the order.

The report must contain the name, grade, parent's name and home address, according to the order.
Appears that Florida wants to keep closer tabs on children "stigmatized" or even worse "warned" about wearing a mask. And this guy is #2 right now for the GOP Presidential nomination.

It's really hard to be further amazed, shocked, or whatever best word describes it, the stupidity, recklessness and pure evil things that DeSantis and those like him will do.

Alabama has no ICU beds left at all. Mango Mussolini is having a rally tomorrow in Alabama. Lets hope he has a heart attack or stroke and cannot get treated.

Warmoth reported that the Orlando Utilities Commission is urging residents to immediately begin conserving water.
The utility relies upon liquid oxygen to clean the city's water supply, but is running into shortages due to the spread of the pandemic in Florida, where GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has banned many public health measures to limit the spread of coronavirus.

"Liquid oxygen is now in short supply due to a record number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and OUC said its supply is running low," the network reported. "Liquid oxygen removes hydrogen sulfide, a colorless gas, from the water. The gas, if not removed, gives the water a strong rotten egg smell."
...

It just keeps getting worse.

Don't get me started on what drinking sulfur laden water does to the digestive system... If you thought it smelled bad going in the one end...

I assume that freedom-loving Floridians will not be dissuaded from using as much water as they goddamn please. No government agency is going to tell them what they should or shouldn’t put in their bodies!

The worst water I ever experienced was in Amsterdam in 1969. Sulfury and toxic smelling.

The water is pretty crappy in Florida. This almost hilarious.

As someone who has lived for 30 years on well water heavily laden with hydrogen sulfide, I’ll say a few things:

  1. You get used to it and the smell disappears
  2. You can get rid of the smell by filling a pitcher in the evening and letting it sit overnight (no tight lid, so it can off-gas)
  3. You can immediately get rid of the smell with a Britta filter
  4. It does not make your shit stink

And finally:
Son: mom, it occurs to me that since you are allergic to fragrance and you won’t let me use scented soap, and that since our water is full of sulfur, then when I come out of the shower, I smell like brimstone.
Me: Son, tell me that if there was a cologne available with the scent of brimstone, you would not buy it?
Son: You have a point. I concede the argument.

Some of you may turn your nose up at science coming from West Virginia, but this looks promising

Sniffing out an alternative: West Virginia University scientists developing nasal mist vaccine targeting COVID-19

The only approved way to get vaccinated against COVID-19 is through a shot in the arm. Eventually, West Virginia University medical researchers could change that narrative.

Scientists say they’ve developed a nasal mist that you would inhale through your nose and would offer protection against SARS-CoV-2 and its emerging variants.

“The more I watched the vaccine race as a bystander, I kept thinking, ‘We should really test the idea of a nasal mist,’” said Heath Damron, director of the WVU Vaccine Development Center.

Also this is from the American Society for Microbiology

To be fair, there were days where I suffered greatly from belching hydrogen sulfide. Whenever I get water laden with it, it makes me vomit, and then things have always been worse for me later on. But, I grant it could be something else aggravated or PTSD responsive from something else.

The hospital I work at in Florida is a small community hospital with about 280 beds. It had 139 COVID patients in beds this morning. Probably more now.

Half the hospital is taken up by COVID patients.

We had 4 COVID patients a few months ago.

People in their late 70's and 80's that have been fully vaccinated are getting infected and getting sick. But not dying.

The unvaccinated are dying.

We just had a 46 year old healthy male that was fit and active with no comorbidities who had COVID in 2020 and thought he was immune die last week.

Meanwhile in conspiracy land...

People who are desperate for some medicine to protect them from COVID, but for some reason won't get the vaccine, are now getting sold on using Ivermectin, a drug used to de-worm horses.

An EMS worker in Tennessee recommended it to firefighters there. And someone in Mississippi tried it and ended up in the hospital.

What? Did Fox, OAN, and Newsmax think people weren't dying fast enough from the virus so they are trying to kill more off this way?

It's also sold as sheep dip.

Talk about who the sheeple really are!

Yes, mass matters for medicine, but generally you do adult and child (small children even less). When someone who isn't a doctor asks you what your weight is so they can give you "medicine", might be time to move on.

While mass is probably relevant for most medicines it's rarely taken into consideration given the costs of doing the testing and a tweak-the-dose approach is good enough. It's common in pediatric medicine, though.
