Covid-19 miscellany

Republican governors urge residents to get vaccinated as polls show widespread GOP resistance - The Washington Post
GOP governors implored their residents on Sunday to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, as polling shows that vaccine hesitancy has been driven by Republicans and as the virus’s new, more contagious delta variant has caused recent upticks in covid-19 cases in areas with low vaccination rates.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) on Sunday expressed concern about possible “trouble” ahead for Arkansans if the state did not accelerate its vaccination rate. In Arkansas, about 53 percent of adults have at least one dose of the vaccine, compared with about two-thirds of adults nationally. The state has seen a recent spike in covid cases and hospitalizations, driven mostly by the delta variant.

“The solution is the vaccinations,” Hutchinson said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding that while many of the state’s senior citizens have gotten vaccinated, the delta variant was now hitting Arkansas’ younger, unvaccinated adults. “It is a great concern.”

,,,
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) had blunter words Sunday when asked about vaccine hesitancy, particularly among young people, despite the incentives states are offering that include lottery prizes and college scholarships.

“The red states probably have a lot of people that are very, very conservative in their thinking and they think, ‘Well, I don’t have to do that.’ But they’re not thinking right,” Justice said on ABC’s “This Week.” The governor has aggressively urged his residents to get vaccinated for months, and West Virginia has been offering everything from college scholarships to free hunting and fishing licenses as incentives.

,,,
On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Gov. Spencer Cox (R-Utah) explained that his state’s lower vaccination rate was partly the result of having the country’s youngest population, adding that adults in Utah are getting vaccinated at the same rate as rest of nation. He called the vaccination gap among Republicans “troubling” and said “hopefully reason will rule.”
Seems to me that that is a result of Republican culture warring, of presenting vaccination as oppression by left-wing ogres.

DeSantis, cruise companies clash over vaccine requirements | Miami Herald

In the article, the title is "Titanic clash pits DeSantis against potent cruise industry as it prepares to restart"

Carnival Cruise Line launches first ship from US port since onset of COVID-19 pandemic
Carnival Vista departed the Port of Galveston in Texas Saturday afternoon for a weeklong cruise with stops in Mahogany Bay, Honduras; Cozumel, Mexico; and Belize City, Belize. It’s the first ship from the cruise line to sail from a U.S. port in more than 15 months.

“Having our guests on board again is something we’ve been looking forward to for a very long time," Carnival Vista Captain Andrea Catalani said in a statement Saturday. "Our crew is very excited and will provide them with the incredible Carnival vacation they’ve been so patiently waiting for.”
Four more Carnival ships are scheduled to go back into service, with more to come.
Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement last month that the company chose to operate with vaccinated guests during July in U.S. waters because of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention constraints.
That's to avoid what happened with the cruise ship Diamond Princess in the spring of last year. Life aboard a 'modern-day plague ship': Diamond Princess passenger quarantined in San Antonio writes book about ordeal

I'm on Carnival Cruise Line's first ship to set sail in over a year. Here are my first impressions on the vaccinated ship.
It was the Carnival Vista and it was 1,055 ft / 322 m long. The ship has 14 decks with outwardly-visible evidence, and the lowest deck in evidence is about 2 decks above the waterline.
Checking in and boarding the Carnival Vista was quick, smooth, and practically identical to the airport experience.

When I first stepped onto the ship, the bar was already packed, a DJ was blasting music, and it was clear people were thrilled to be cruising again.

Within an hour of boarding, people were dancing, exploring the ship's casino, and a few even found the time to decorate their cabin doors.

The muster drill, which prepares passengers for an emergency, usually takes a good chunk of time on embarkation day. On this cruise, Carnival had small groups go through the drill, which decreased crowding and took just two minutes.

I thought my 185-square-bedroom would feel cramped, but the king-sized bed was a game-changer.
185 square feet / 17 square meters -- square of 13.6 ft / 4.1 m -- seems like a hotel room.
While some experiences - like the buffet - felt identical to pre-pre-pandemic cruising ...

... other elements on the cruise were quite different and there were reminders of COVID precautions sprinkled throughout the ship.

I was out running errands yesterday, in a couple of stores. I would say the mask less v masked was about 50/50. Finally people are starting to lose the fear that has gripped them for the past year.

My county is 75% fully vaccinated for 12 and up and most stores now allow you to not wear a mask indoors if you’re fully vaccinated.

I don’t know what percentage of people are vaccinated in LA County is. There is one person in our office (staff of 15) who will not get vaccinated.

This guy is pretty cool. Good for watching as you do chores and occasionally stop when you get a fact to follow.

Concluding, research related to ivermectin in COVID-19 has serious methodological limitations resulting in very low certainty of the evidence, and continues to grow.37–39 The use of ivermectin, among others repurposed drugs for prophylaxis or treatment for COVID-19, should be done based on trustable evidence, without conflicts of interest, with proven safety and efficacy in patient-consented, ethically approved, randomised clinical trials.

Conflict of interest? Say it ain't so

Conflicts of interest run both ways and ones that ally with large corporations should often be viewed askance.

A 13-year-old from Michigan has died in his sleep three days after receiving his second coronavirus vaccine, prompting an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control. Jacob Clynick, a healthy boy with no underlying conditions, received his second shot of the Pfizer vaccine at Walgreens in Zilwaukee on June 13, according to his aunt Tammy Burages. She told The Detroit Free Press that the only side effects Jacob had experienced from the vaccine were fatigue and fever, which are considered normal.

He complained of a stomach ache on June 15 and went to bed, where he died in his sleep, Burages said.

Why the heck is a 13 year old getting vaccinated anyway?

What's wrong with 13 year olds getting vaccinated?

Zilwaukee is a township just north of the city I live in.

And now there's a Lambda which is starting to pick up concern...

I'm not too concerned, until we get the Omega strain.

We've had lambda for months here. That one and Omega seem to have displaced Alpha so one would expect it to be more transmissible than the original, but I doubt as much as Delta. At least, the potential circulation of Delta is the biggest concern here so far, though we'll have to wait and see which one wins.

Over here, there are parents of people aged 12-18 with conditions that make them vulnerable complaining because the government does not approve a vaccine for them, and does not bring the Pfizer vaccine which is the only one approved elsewhere. The UK, on the other hand, allows that:

So, maybe that was the case here.

Vaccination in Thailand is a mess, especially for expats like myself. The government is jabbing Sinevac (ineffective?) and AstraZenca (dangerous?) so many Thais are refusing the vaccines altogether. There is much anger directed at the Prime Minister since other, better vaccines were available. Why Thailand went with two of the worst vaccines is unclear, but the answer probably rhymes with 'honey.' An internal memo was leaked recently, about the plans to give a 3rd Pfizer jab to people who've already had two Sinevac jabs.
“At present, if it [Pfizer vaccine] is administered on the third group, it is tantamount to admitting that Sinovac vaccine offers no protection. This will make it harder to defend it”.

To be eligible for the free government jabs a foreigner needs a "yellow" book and a "pink" ID card. I never pursued getting these: the main advantage seemed to be the right to own an automobile in one's own name, but I'm happy to register vehicles in the names of wife or kids. (Many of the "Hill people" of Thailand also do NOT have ID cards despite their ancestors living here for generations. Can they get vaccinated?)

The U.S. vaccinated all employees of its embassy and consulates here, but not ordinary U.S. citizens. (France did offer free vaccination for all French nationals living in Thailand.) Now I read that the U.S. has already donated 1.5 million Pfizer doses to the Kingdom on condition that 20% be used for foreigners. (That gives an idea of the huge expat population living here.) Apparently the Thai government has purchased another 20 million Pfizer doses for delivery near year's end.

Meanwhile, we (two Thai nationals and myself) have joined a queue to get vaccinated at a private hospital, maybe in January, maybe with Moderna. (We missed other such queueing opportunities: queues open and are filled hours later.) We had to pay in advance for these vaccinations ($130 each). If we get the Pfizer jabs first, perhaps we'll be able to sell our Moderna queue positions to recover the $130 investments.

That's no good. I hope you can get a good vaccine, but too bad the cost. I got AZ here, and hit me pretty hard, but that's just bad luck going by the statistics. Most people are okay, though it does seem riskier than others, based on available data, afaik.

By the way, we don't have Pfizer here, either, though for different reasons. Here the government rejected Pfizer's conditions until a few days ago due to nationalistic pride, and vaccinated with Sputnik (not bad), AZ (not bad, but now I hate it  ), and Sinopharm (not good, but at least it prevents deaths it seems), letting a lot of people die in the meantime, not because those vaccines don't save lives, but because many more would have been saved if they had had those vaccines and millions of Pfizer doses the company was willing to sell as part of an agreement because the largest Pfizer vaccine trial was here - only a few days ago the government yielded, so we'll have Pfizer after all, but much later and in much lower numbers than we could have.

I don't think anybody else has died from Pfizer yet. Which makes me wonder if this guy died from Pfizer. People die randomly for all kinds of shit. How isn't this correlation and not causation?

In the Pfizer trial six people died. Four of the people who died got the placebo. The two who died was well within expectation. If you run a trial large enough some of them are going to die from random shit unrelated to the vaccine.

The 13 year old is being vaccinated to stop the spread of a deadly pandemic.

Well, 3 days after the second shot for a 13 year old could be a hell of a coincidence.
Need to know the size of the statistics.
