Covid-19 miscellany

The usual result of affirmative action policies is that minority students fail their licensing exams at far higher rates.

I clicked the link, skimmed very briefly, and this caught my eye:
Moreover, the impact of stereotype threat also extends to standardized test performance. In low threat test conditions, participants were told they were completing a “series of puzzles,” and Black undergraduate students performed just as well their White classmates on this cognitive ability test.24 However, in standard and high threat conditions, in which students were told they were completing an IQ test, Black students earned lower scores on the same exam.
 I was intrigued by this.

When you are told all your life that you have to keep a head down and not seem like a threat...

Looking back on my own life, I have encountered disturbing and noticable number of black people who did not take their own abilities seriously, who were always reserved and held back, even secretive about what they are capable of.

I can see why, but I'll leave the "why" of it as an open exercise.

So, I have been following the news stories about RSV on news sites and on Twitter with truly "legit" medical people giving their opinions and analysis in long threads.

What I don't know at all, is if there are important and impactful strain differences between 2021 and 2022.

They are saying that in 2021 there was a lot of pediatric RSV before the omicron wave that did not lead to much hospitalization. Now in 2022 less cases of RSV is leading to way more total problems for kids.

RSV has been endemic since forever. It's mostly harmless, and is so highly contagious that the various safeguards against COVID employed worldwide did little or nothing to reduce the spread of RSV.

It's so basically harmless that nobody except virologists need worry about it. it's everywhere, and it always has been. The only thing that has changed is that COVID has prompted us to spend time and effort on identifying even mild respiratory illnesses to a level of accuracy that previously wasn't done.

RSV used to be just one of dozens of mild respiratory viruses that mostly only affected children, for the simple reason that adults have been around long enough to have developed immunity to pretty much every strain. Now we are seeing it diagnosed specifically, rather than being just lumped into "common cold".

What you don't know at all is how to tell the difference between stupid propaganda spread by idiots, and actual information; And this is reflected by your pathological need to JAQ off and make stupid hints about the possibility that something worrying is out there but not widely known about.

There's no such threat. You are being played like a fiddle by a collection of pathological memes that parasitise the evolved human tendency to over emphasise concealed threats. And you should stop being their witless vector, for the general good of humanity, and for the benefit of your own mental health.

Stop spreading horseshit you aren't competent to comprehend. Either stop reading this crap entirely; Or learn enough virology, epidemiology, and basic biology to identify it as crap, thereby inoculating yourself against it.

Things you don't understand are scary. But running around with your hair on fire, trying to recruit others into your speculative fear of the unknown is not a socially responsible response to fear of the unknown. Stop it. It's as antisocial as spitting in public (and similarly harmful to public health).

Jesus H Christ, LA County health department are hassling us again about wearing masks indoors due to an increase in Covid cases.

LA county sounds like a real shithole. Amazing you still live there. Must be that great weather in Santa Monica.

It took a lot for me to say
I wanna walk away, L.A.
From the sharks and the Chardonnay
In California, in California

Between the covid, the “homeless” and the climate apocalypse it’s not looking good for Santa Monica these days. I’m glad I don’t actually live there.

If you actually pay attention and listen to reporting, what COVID did is overload hospitals and ERs.

Right now it is resprtory virus in kids. Here is Seattle we are runnng out of bed space for RSV victims especially kids. Add to that the flu.

Out of curiosity did you get vaccinated for COVID or flu this year?

I had a flu shot last Wednesday actually.

I have not had a covid booster since December 2021. I don’t intend on getting another one.
Do you have concerns with COVID vaccines?

Flu vaccines do have low risks. There are risks and side effects to common antibiotics like penicillin. Many pharmaceuticals have some risks.

Do you have concerns with COVID vaccines?
Not really. But it’s not really effective and it’s not appropriate for me being a reasonably young and healthy person. So I’ll skip it.
During the worse of the pandemic there were young healthy guys who said they should have gotten the vaccine after they made it through intensive care.

The difference between infection rates between states with low abd states with high vaccinatin rates clearly show effectiveness.

As was often said, getting vaccinated is not just about you, it is also about helping to minimize infecting others.

If yiu are young and healthy why get a flu shot? I am again curious.

It wasn't until my late 30s that I realized I was not invulnerable.....some guys never realize it.

Well clearly that is false.

Some years I do, some years I don’t. I think I have had a flu shot the past six years. I’m not convinced of it’s effectiveness but I’ll get one anyway. I would probably have taken the covid booster if my doctor had it when I was in on Wednesday but I’m not that concerned about covid that I’m going to drag my ass into Walgreens.

Why get a vaccine? Simple: getting vaccinated lowers your chance of getting a disease; and if you get it, minimizes the symptoms. Period. Not picking on you Steve, but the number one reason why I'm no longer a republican is their politicization of science. Here's the deal: you and Twizzle will get exposed to covid at some point (unless you already have). If your body has dead antibodies in it from a vaccine, your body will better react to the virus and fight it.

I have had the “vaccine”, two boosters and still contracted covid.

And you didn't die. Unlike a lot of people who contracted covid without having had
the "vaccine".
:rolleyesa:

The scare quotes are beyond absurd, btw.

Yes, vaccines are never 100%, and that includes flu vaccines. So why get a flu shot if that is how you thk.

Again, data shows if you are vaccinated and get COVID it is likely to be less severe. There is a pobabilty if you get the COVID vaccine you nay catch it and die. But then you can die from flu even if vaccinated..

If yuu are vaccinated for COVID and become infected your viral load is lower. Tha means when you sneeze or cough you launch less of virus into te air people around you are breathng.

Back in the 680s Iwnet to a latge international engineering confernce in Ohio. I saw Asians wearing masks and it seened odd at the time. Asians have been wering masks in flu season for a long time.
