Democrats 2020

Sorry, but I disagree. IF this comment was so insignificant, why are so many Democrats in Florida having a fit about it? To me, this is one of Sanders problems. He speaks like a raving maniac, without carefully thinking through what he says. Now, that might not bother the two of you, but I assure you it's going to have an impact on a lot of other voters. Will he still be able to win in November. I remain highly skeptical. I know exactly what he said, but people who were victims of Castro, don't want to be told anything good about his regime. Sanders has no tact whatsoever.

And as far as only political junkies remembering this, I don't think you're considering the tons of adds, which will snip out the worst part of his comment. I predict that will played again and again, especially in Florida and other states that have a lot of Hispanic immigrants that came from oppressive countries. This is going to probably be the nastiest race we've ever seen. And Sanders better learn to think before he speaks, if he's even capable of that. I have my doubts.

I used to think he was the kooky leftie in Congress. I even liked the guy when I was younger. Now, I see him way in over his head, ego driven without a realistic plan. The only things that might save him is for the economy to tank, or for people to finally get so disgusted with Trump that they will vote for any alternative.

Barack Obama said:
I said this to President Castro...you've made great progress in educating young people....Medical care, the life expectancy of Cubans is equivalent to the United States...That's a huge achievement. They should be congratulated.

All of the oppo stuff on Bernie is just a retread of McCain's and Clinton's attacks on Obama in 2008. There's almost always a clip somewhere of Obama being called out for exactly the same shit... for being a Russian pawn, for having praised the wrong people, for being a socialist, for being too radical. It didn't work then and it's not going to work now

I can’t imagine what Steyer hopes to achieve in South Carolina: a strong third place? It’s not like he’s going to get momentum going into Super Tuesday. His is not an unfamiliar face. His mug has been running “impeach Trump” ads since Trump crawled into office.
I hope he, Klobuchar, and Warren drop this nonsense before Super Tuesday.

This sort of virtue signaling by association thing is often tried. But has it ever worked? With Obama, it was Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers. With Clinton and Trump it was Jeffrey Epstein and for the latter his unashamed love of dictators in general, especially Putin. Made no difference in either case; if you've decided you like or dislike a candidate, questionable taste in friends turned into a heavy-handed test of ideological purity is unlikely to change your mind. Undecided folks are unlikely to hear about or care about the latest political scandals at all.

I don't, what a disaster! Just hand all the moderate votes to the last Dem-in-name-only billionaire left standing? I swear to shit I'm re-registering my party affiliation again if they let Bloomberg just waltz in and buy the nomination.

Remember in 2016 how everyone was told how wrong it was to attack the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination? That sure went right out fucking window, I wonder why

Third Way memorandum to Democratic candidates on Bernie Sanders

At the Las Vegas debate, each of you took aim at one another, often to withering effect.
But with few exceptions, you declined to really challenge Senator Sanders. If you repeat
this strategy at the South Carolina debate this week, you could hand the nomination to
Sanders, likely dooming the Democratic Party – and the nation – to Trump and sweeping
down-ballot Republican victories in November.

[...]

You are almost out of time—Sanders could take a nearly insurmountable delegate lead on
Super Tuesday. We believe it is imperative that one of you emerge as the nominee, so we
urge you to take the fight to him at the next debate. Beyond the policy critiques that have
constituted most of your limited thrusts at Sanders so far, he has an incredible list of
political vulnerabilities that would be easy to unpack, even within the debate’s time limitations.

Yes, the center-left think tank called Third Way is urging all of the candidates in the Democratic primary to attack the candidate with the largest base of support, who is winning all the primaries.

How could Bernie be so divisive like this? He needs to rein in his Bros

Oh, that was in no way an endorsement of Bloomberg. If he wanted to be a good American he would have put his money in and kept his ass out. The only reason I did not mention him is he has yet to prove himself. Steyer, Klobuchar (love you Amy but it’s time), and Warren have shown they have no mojo for this race.

That's true, but Obama said that at the end of his second term, not while he was running for president. Plus the people who called him a Marxist, Communist, Muslim who was born in Kenya, didn't have a direct quote to prove that he was any of those things. Of course, there will be criticisms, but a candidate needs to try and find a unifying message, and not say things that are obvious fodder for his/her opponnets.

Don't get me wrong, I still plan on voting for Bernie if I must, I'm just not happy about it, and I have respect for people like you who voted for Clinton and weren't happy about it. But, I have several friends who were fans of Bernie and refused to vote for Clinton. I consider them complicit in electing Trump. None of us can afford to do that this time, and it shouldn't matter if Bernie, Biden or Bloomberg etc. is the eventual nominee. We must work to take Trump out of office. I'm just worried that Bernie will have a hard time winning, especially if he doesn't learn to be more tactful.

While I don't expect him to accomplish that much, unless a large majority of rather progressive Dems take over the entire congress, I don't expect him to take down the country and act like an autocrat in the same, destructive way that Trump is doing. So, please understand that. I just come here to share opinions and express ideas. I have no personal animosity towards anyone who disagrees with me, and the few troll like Trump fans here do sometimes entertain me. :D

But, technically, we are still in primary season, so we can still mix it up a little.

If you don't vote for the nominee, you will be part of the problem imo. There are even some Republicans who are saying they will vote for Bernie if they must because Trump's presidency is destroying the country.

You sound exactly like me when I first considered that Bernie might be the nominee several months ago. I swore I would do a write in, or leave the presidency blank, but after calming down and becoming more rational, I came to terms with the fact that I'd have to vote for the Democratic nominee regardless of my personal distaste for the person or his/her policies. I doubt that Bloomberg will be the nominee, btw, but would you believe I saw my liberal millennial niece endorse him on her FB page this week?

If you don't vote for the nominee, you will be part of the problem imo.

Then hopefully Bloomberg isn't the nominee, he's the only Democratic candidate I would not vote for. And I imagine there's a good number of progressives who feel similarly, but of course that's just anecdotal.

I do think it's funny that an out-of-context comment from Bernie has people clutching their pearls yet again, but no one seems to think Trump's love and praise of dictators like Kim and Putin will have any effect on him.

Bloomberg is toast. I just heard on the radio an hour ago his approval rating dropped 30 points after Warren gave him a trash can beating in the debate.

Tonight it will be Bernie's turn to get that beating.

Tonight it will be Bernie's turn to get that beating.

IMO, if they go all in on Republican talking points and out-of-context smears against Bernie and succeed then it's probably a disaster for the Democratic Party. Talking for weeks about "unity" and "blue no matter who" implying Bernie supporters need to get in line if he's not the nominee, then burning that bridge the moment Bernie is the frontrunner will only turn his significant number of supporters against the party completely.

No, focusing on policy and trying to prove why that policy is better for the nation is the way to fight Bernie. If you can't accomplish that and he does then he deserves to be the nominee, that's the way it works.

I read an interesting interview with a latino voter in Nevada ... when asked why he voted for Bernie he said that Bernie was the only candidate running ads in Spanish so he was literally the only candidate latino voters saw on their TV's giving any sort of shit about them.

Ocasio-Cortez suggests a Bloomberg presidency would pave the way for 'a worse Trump' | TheHill
"Obviously, we have to beat Trump, but if we beat Trump and go back to the same policies that we had before, a worse Trump is going to come. A Trump that’s more sophisticated, whose fascism is less obvious, is going to come, and things could get even worse," Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent campaign surrogate for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), said during a discussion about Bloomberg on "The Breakfast Club" radio show.
Despite all his bragging about how he is the best at everything he does, Trump isn't very competent, and some psychologists suspect that he has some early stage of dementia. MB has much more political savvy, and an actual political career that he can point to. He is also better-mannered -- he doesn't do name-calling.

As to a possibility of a Trump-successor fascist, that seems rather plausible - someone willing to get the sort of support that he has, but with better ability to disguise what he is going.
Ocasio-Cortez was also critical of Bloomberg's record, "from stop and frisk to the surge in housing costs in New York City to even his own history on redlining to how he talks about transgender people."
MB has gotten support from some black politicians, but AOC suspects that MB has been trying to buy support.
"We lived under his tenure as mayor. We know exactly what he did, and this is part of what he’s doing, when he comes in, swoops in super late in the game, with billions of dollars at his disposal and is able to shower the airwaves with his cash," she said. "People see what he’s done with his money ... without seeing what he’s actually done with his power."
She also said in that interview that she thinks that political redemption is possible, but that it has to be earned. Announcing it shortly before one's run for President isn't very convincing.

But it can happen. Hugo Black went from wearing white robes and scaring black people to wearing black robes and scaring white people.

Early in his political career, HB joined the Ku Klux Klan to promote that career. But he insists that he was always law-abiding, meaning that he wasn't involved in KKK terrorism. Later in life, he was appointed to the Supreme Court, and he helped write some important civil-rights decisions.

AOC follows the tradition of socialists and communists calling everybody who is not socialist

He is also very well educated - Bachelors in EE from Johns Hopkins and an MBA from Harvard - and much more competent than FFvC.

And promising free college education, even at private colleges, for black students, as her commanding officer has done, is not trying to buy support of black people?

"We lived under his tenure as mayor. We know exactly what he did,
I don't agree with everything Bloomy has done, but overall I think his three terms as mayor were pretty successful. He was certainly doing a much better job than the new guy.

Immigrants who originally speak languages other than Spanish don't get ads in their native tongues either. Besides, if you become citizen, you should know English anyway and thus regular ads in English should be speaking to you as much as to any other American. This Spandering is really going on my nerves!

Bloomberg is toast.
I don't think so. He had one bad debate, that's not a death knell. He is doing relatively well in national polls and many of the Super Tuesday states. He will get many delegates there, especially if Biden disappoints on Saturday.

I just heard on the radio an hour ago his approval rating dropped 30 points after Warren gave him a trash can beating in the debate.
If anybody is toast it's her. She might win MA, but that's it.

Spanish has been the lingua franca in the American Southwest since the Spanish colonization of the Americas from the 16th to 18th centuries. Anyone who hopes to become President should already know that.

Meanwhile. What America can look forward to should the Bern by some miracle win in both the Presidency as well as the house come November.

Venezuela is a miserable socialist hellhole.

But the Bernie Sanders site still proudly boasts the op-ed with the closing comments, "These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who's the banana republic now?"

Here's what the Bernie Dream is like in Venezuela.

One of every three people in Venezuela is struggling to put enough food on the table to meet minimum nutrition requirements as the nation’s severe economic contraction and political upheaval persists, according to a study published Sunday by the U.N. World Food Program.

A nationwide survey based on data from 8,375 questionnaires reveals a startling picture of the large number of Venezuelans surviving off a diet consisting largely of tubers and beans as hyperinflation renders many salaries worthless.

The survey found that 74% of families have adopted “food-related coping strategies,” such as reducing the variety and quality of food they eat. Sixty percent of households reported cutting portion sizes in meals, 33% said they had accepted food as payment for work and 20% reported selling family assets to cover basic needs.

If anybody is toast it's her. She might win MA, but that's it.

Now, according to those who review debates, he's had two bad debates. I honestly don't see how he's going to pick up enough steam at this point to surpass the others. He's not even on the ballot in SC, so his last chance will be Super Tuesday.

The reason, as you probably know, that Bernie is so far ahead at this point, is because the more moderate lane hasn't shrunk down enough. It's very similar to how Trump won his nomination. He was the outsider who didn't really fit in, but the other candidates, who were less exciting, stayed in the race too long, and Trump ended up winning the nomination.

Every statistic I've read gives Bernie less than 35 or 40% support, but as long as he's up against four more moderate candidates, it will likely be easy for him to swing to victory. Plus, let's not forget the the man has been campaigning for this at least since 2015. He has a strong base and lots of money. To me, he looks and sounds like he's a bit nuts, but compared to Trump, I can find the motivation to vote for him if I must. I will vote for someone else in the primary, just because he's not my first choice, but you and I don't vote until after Super Tuesday, and by then we might have a non stoppable Sanders.

I'm not worried about his plans. I don't think they are affordable, but neither does most of Congress. Hopefully, if Bernie does become president, he will learn to compromise if he wants to accomplish anything.
