Democrats 2020

Centrist Dems: Bernie is such an idealist, always promising things that are impossible to deliver, we need someone more pragmatic

Also centrist Dems:

Former Vice President Joe Biden says that he'll cure cancer if he's elected president

"A lot of you understand what loss is and when loss occurs, you know that people come up to you and tell you 'I understand' if you lose a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, a family member," he said. "That's why I've worked so hard in my career to make sure that — I promise you if I'm elected president, you're going to see the single most important thing that changes America, we're gonna cure cancer."

So the debate lineups have been posted.
Elizabeth Warren will be the only major candidate on the stage on Wednesday, while the others, Biden, Bernie, Mayor Pete and Kamala Harris will share the stage on Thursday.

This could be good or bad for warren. She can use the prominence on stage to expand her ideas without having to spar with heavyweights but at the same time, the Wednesday debate might come to be seen as the unofficial kiddie table debate due to paucity of major candidates on stage. Also, sparring with major opponents might help at least some of the candidates in the 2nd round of the debate. Iron sharpens iron after all.

And if he's not elected president, well fuck you.

Swalwell and Williamson made the stage! That's got to be some 4chan shit.

Dude, Williamson is actually good. I'm all about orbs and crystals 2020 if it means standing up to the military-industrial complex.

I'm not sure that I'd characterize AOC as a socialist. I've been reading her endless thread in the Political Discussions thread. She's more of an old fashioned democrat that wants a very broad and large safety net. She's been quoted over and over as favoring more of a "Nordic Model" where the state helps provide a high level of security for its citizens. But it's paid for by there very capitalistic free market companies. The Nordic countries greatly enforce property rights, free trade, little regulation on private sector, high level of union membership, and etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_model

I actually like AOC. Clearly the republicans are terrified of her and desperately trying to brand her as a "Socialist"!

Actually I agree with you on the above, and all those who have noted that Republicans (and some Democrats) are misusing the term "socialism" and labeling every humane social-net policy as "socialism" like it is some sort of scary boogeyman

There's socialism and then there's socialism. True Socialism usually means big taxing governments and a much bigger bureaucracy and throwing taxpayers money away like wedding guests throw confetti at a bride and groom. In some cases it leads to a Greece or worse, a Venezuela.

Capitalism usually means risk taking, hard work and reward for effort.
And then there is Social Democracy, where you have pensions, publicly owned utilities, voting rights for everyone, minimum wages, public education, and dare we say it... health care services available for all. It is paid for by taxation, because the nation as a whole benefits when they are educated, fed, healthy, and don't have to work in their 80s.

O c'mon! That's just silly pie-in-the-sky thinking.

Trump tonight, goes Single White Female on Biden: “We will come up with the cures for many, many, problems, many diseases, including cancer and others.”

I heard that Trump accused Biden of groping women. Oh the irony. He is obviously terrified of Biden and is now projecting his own negative behavior on Biden. Someone needs to tell him there is a big difference between affection and grabbing a woman by her genitals. Amazing, how people can still believe the shit that he keeps saying.

Honestly, it worked for Trump in 2016 with his whole "Bill Clinton is a rapist" thing. Here's the rub: most political discourse in this day and age is not centered around actual policies or principles, but around catching opponents in inconsistencies. If Trump can show that his opponent has engaged in behavior that is similar to what he is being accused of, the battle is already won; it was never about the wrongness of the behavior itself, but solely about the fact that one candidate had a wrongdoing that the other didn't. When that situation changes the two are equalized, even if only in label and not substance, and the issue is removed from the political landscape entirely because it's no longer tactically effective. Trump's campaign handlers know this.

You can't make this stuff up, folks.

Joe Biden Promises Rich Donors He Won’t ‘Demonize’ The Wealthy If Elected President

“The truth of the matter is, you all, you all know, you all know in your gut what has to be done. We can disagree in the margins but the truth of the matter is it’s all within our wheelhouse and nobody has to be punished. No one’s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change,” he said.

Says it all. But in the next breath:

When we have income inequality as large as we have in the United States today, it brews and ferments political discord and basic revolution. Not a joke. Not a joke ... It allows demagogues to step in and say the reason where we are is because of the ‘other’ ... You’re not the other. I need you very badly. I hope if I win this nomination, I won’t let you down. I promise you. I have a bad reputation, I always say what I mean. The problem is I sometimes say all that I mean.

This is Bush's "I call you my base", Mitt Romney's "47%", it's the same shit over and over again except now, for some reason, the Democratic frontrunner for the nomination is saying it and still leading in every poll.

It sounds like he is saying, raising taxes on the more wealthy won't make them less wealthy.

That is exactly what he's saying. If you have an income of a million dollars a year and your tax rate is increased, it's not going to change your standard of living. I'm sure that was his point. Unlike you, I have no problem with people being wealthy, but I do have an issue with the extreme wealth disparities that we have these days. I think we can both agree on that, even if we don't agree on much else.

I get it. You don't like Biden. Fair enough. I don't like Bernie. :p

You're both wrong, he wasn't talking about what would happen if the taxes were raised, he was talking about what would happen if "nobody has to be punished" and the taxes stayed pretty much the same because "it's all within our wheelhouse." In other words, what would happen if Biden got elected. He's saying: I pose no threat to your wealth nor your control over the political process, and to prove it I am here to grovel for your support.

It doesn't matter that much who becomes the Democratic nominee, as long as she/he can obtain enough electoral votes to win the election. What matters far more is taking back the Senate and keeping the majority in the House. Most any of the Democratic candidates will support any solid, well financed legislation that is passed by Congress. If the Dems don't control Congress, then no progress will be made. It's as simple as that.

Who is the "you" here?

I'm still backing Harris at this point.

The "you" was my mistake. I probably quoted the wrong post, and was thinking of PH. Sorry if I confused you. It wasn't directed at you. I just fucked up. So sorry. I will try not to do it again. :embarassed:

I'm not backing anyone until right before the primaries, and then I will likely back whoever seems to have the best polling against Trump. To be perfectly honest, I'm not thrilled with any of the candidates, which is kind of sad since there are so many of them. I just found out that Georgia has moved the primary up to March 24th, supposedly so we can get more attention. We were originally planning on being part of Super Tuesday, on March 3rd. But, since we have three full weeks of early voting, I guess I can still vote on March 3rd.
