Democrats 2020

Bernie Sanders in God’s country
Bernie Sanders won the first three states over the primary cycle. But, this weekend, he’s arrived in unfriendly territory: a state where most Democrats go to church every Sunday and most Wednesdays, to boot.

The socialist from Vermont, who promises a revolution right here on Earth, is the candidate of atheists, agnostics, and the unaffiliated. That’s a young, white demographic. South Carolina, where about half of the Democratic electorate is African American, is a state of black Baptists and Southern Baptists.
Joe Biden appeared at a church, and a pastor spoke before his speech, praying to Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness.

But for Bernie Sanders, a certain "Killer Mike" appeared. He had founded a religion with a "New Jesus" that he calls a "Church of Sleep".
As Vice magazine puts it, “Killer Mike is frustrated that black Christian communities are taught to worship a white Jesus,” and Mike’s church includes "a sermon in his favorite strip club where women pole-dance while a gospel choir sings and his parishioners pass around joints.”

When the cameras aren’t rolling, Killer Mike worships “the Gods within me, and the Gods I see existing outside of me everyday,” as he told Vice.
from Apparently Killer Mike Really Does Have His Own Religion - VICE - is this anything like AOC saying that we all are holy?
Kyle and Lara Allan, two Sanders supporters in their early 30s, when asked if they were religious, said, “No, no.” Kyle Allan added: “I have a few Catholic friends. But the majority are secular.”

Rob Morrell, a multiracial gay man at the Sanders rally, called himself “Relig-ish” but added, “Religion is something for the family, but we need to leave it” out of the public. He said the older generation is religious, “but, if you think about it, things have changed.”
Many of the BS supporters were white and young.

Back in 2016, 54% of primarygoers attended church at least once a week, while only 11% were non-attenders. Last year, BS's strongest supporters were atheists at 30%, then agnostics, then "nothing in particular". In NH, BS got 15% of at-least-weekly attenders and 31% of never-attenders. Though BS is Jewish, he got only 11% of Jewish voters.
Biden, meanwhile, wears his religion on his sleeve — and his forehead. He arrived at his CNN South Carolina town hall on Ash Wednesday with his ashes still on his forehead and told the crowd that he had instructed CNN’s makeup crew not to wipe it off.
That's the Ash-Wednesday ash cross, though it often looks like a blotch. Those at the church where he spoke liked the way he talked about religion and his religious upbringing.

Steyer based his candidacy on promising to declare a "national emergency" on climate change upon taking office, racial justice, and ideas like allowing voters to make laws directly through regular national referenda. He also was a proponent of impeaching President Donald Trump

I didn't realize he was for participatory democracy and a national emergency on climate change. I think more highly of the oligarch now.

Guess who's stumping for Bernie Sanders? His wife Jane - Candidate's wife energizes crowd at local rally | News | tahlequahdailypress.com in Tahlequah, OK

She described her husband's past actions and hinted that that is what his presidency would be like.
“The Bernie Sanders who as a college student was arrested protesting housing segregation will be the President Bernie Sanders who fights institutional racism, reforms our criminal justice system, and enacts a humane immigration policy,” she said.

Citing his ability to remain frugal with taxpayer dollars, while also improving city services when he was mayor in Burlington, Vermont, Sanders said he would do the same to “deliver a Green New Deal, transition our economy to renewable energy, and effectively fight climate change.”

“The Bernie Sanders who effectively fought cuts to Social Security in Congress will be the President Bernie Sanders who doesn’t only not cut Social Security, but expands it so that our seniors can retire in dignity,” Sanders said. “And the Bernie Sanders who showed the courage and judgment to oppose the Iraq War will be the President Bernie Sanders who finally ends endless wars and focuses on rebuilding our international [relationships].”

Another one bites the dust. Tom Steyer ends 2020 presidential campaign - CNNPolitics

With purely proportional allocation, he would likely win 6 delegates in South Carolina, but with previous contests' disproportions, he may win fewer than that.

But in any case, he is correct in recognizing that he is not likely to win.

Mike Prysner on Twitter: "Warren just now, as she’s 5th place in #SCprimary, on why she’s staying in the race: “we want to gain as many delegates going into the convention as we can.”
No more talk of winning states. Rhetoric is now just about winning some delegates and staying til a contested convention https://t.co/XCOgGS6hse" / Twitter

Whatever she hopes to accomplish with that. Why doesn't she accept that she is not going to win and join Bernie Sanders?

I don't get why so much focus and importance is placed on African-American voters in places like SC? In the entire south with all those black voters they are going to deliver exactly 0 electoral votes to the eventual candidate. Why then, do they have such outsized importance in the primary process? They are literally voting for a person who will never ever ever win their state.

Biden winning SC means jack squat to me, he's never going to carry the state in the general anyway.

People unreasonably obsessed with politics, and with elections in particular, forget that most people tune them out most of the time, and likely show up and vote out of habit, and for the goddam stupidest or counter-intuitive reasons.

A substantial number of Biden voters today described themselves as quite liberal (I forget the exact exit poll wording). That's borderline delusional to me. Biden is almost a fucking Republican at this point. Votes for wars, wants to cut social security, legislates for banks, happy to jail minorities.

It's virtue signalling. The whites have to prove to each other that the blacks like them, before gerrymandering their votes into irrelevance like usual.

There is still a 15 percent threshold for delegates, both statewide for statewide delegates and in the congressional districts for the rest. So I really don't know why you bother with your pure proportional calculations.
Steyer will end with zero statewide delegates, but may eek out a delegate or two if he overperforms in some CDs. Right now the delegates are 33 for Biden, 11 for Bernie, with 10 still outstanding. Biden has plurality or majority in every county though, so it's not like for example Nevada where Buttigieg won in a number of counties.

But in any case, he is correct in recognizing that he is not likely to win.
Yes. He put a lot of resources in SC and this is a bitter defeat.

She really can't stand Sanders almost as much as she can't stand Bloomberg. She wants to harm him because she knows that she is mostly taking votes from him, not Biden. Or maybe she is hoping to be the "compromise candidate" between the moderate and progressive wings at the convention. But I don't see that happening - there is no way nomination will be given on the second ballot to a candidate who walks in with 300 or even 400 delegates and that's her ceiling. She is at 8 delegates now for fuck's sake!

Referenda are are horrible idea. And under what rock have you been since 2016 if you don't know that he is obsessed with climate? He has been ranting against fracking for example for years! He also loathes pipelines.

Not a very convincing argument.

And under what rock have you been since 2016 if you don't know that he is obsessed with climate?

It's even less convincing when you add an insult.

He has been ranting against fracking for example for years! He also loathes pipelines.

It's not emotional, but logical. We have to stop increasing the global temperature.

The Pied Pipers of the Dirtbag Left Want to Lead Everyone to Bernie Sanders - The New York Times - like Chapo Trap House
The media they consumed was fake news aimed to distract them from the only war worth fighting: the class war. Politesse, civility, even pleasure — those were tools of the neoliberal oppressor. The right answer is rage.

“That joy,” the Chapo co-host Will Menaker said to the crowd gathered in Iowa City on the eve of the Iowa caucus. “That’s good but it’s not as good a motivator when you’re really going to war as spite.”

“Let the hate feed you,” the co-host Amber A’Lee Frost added as the audience roared.

And it does. Especially toward other Democrats.
Joe Biden's supporters are “gelatinous 100-year-olds.”

Pete Buttigieg is “a bloodless asexual.” According to Ms. A'Lee Frost, “The gayest thing about him is he descends from an ethnic group that’s like a little toy dog.” - there's a dog breed called Maltese.

Elizabeth Warren? They hiss about her. “Yes, my sssssoldiers,” Mr. Menaker said.

Mike Bloomberg? “Beat him so badly that this midget gremlin won’t even have a shot even with a trillion dollars,” Mr. Menaker said. “Kill him,” an audience member shouted. It was, of course, a joke.
In their rowdy, vulgar weekly podcast, they are stoking the fires of a political insurgency led by their 78-year-old idol. The man stands for the movement, the movement is the man.

“Our boy Bernie” they call him.

Another one whose name the NYT didn't print.

About Chapo Trap House,
Their followers — on the night in Iowa City more than 700 strong — come to hear them rage for three hours against the student debt, the high rent, the dead-end creative class jobs, and the feeling of hopelessness fighting against a liberal political establishment that seems polite when they are angry.

They were promised a better life, a more dignified life, and they are done waiting for it.

And for fans, it brings a sense of strength and community during a political era that has only felt like defeat.
So the angry parts of the Right now have a counterpart on the Left, this Dirtbag movement. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate that CTH likes, and BS and his staffers return that appreciation. Would it hurt him in the main election? Or does he have confidence that he will have a base that supports him? Sort of like Trump, but on the left. Confidence that he can get enough new voters? Like what AOC did in 2018.

From the presser, the testing phase sounds like 3-4 months at least. We are likely talking September before they have a vaccine ready to roll out.

Can you point to any economic indices (unemployment, wage rises] that moved dramatically in the right direction in the aftermath of Trump taking office in 2017? All the evidence I've seen is for a continuation of trends established during Obama's 2nd term, and that's at best. The unemployment rate has actually slowed slightly.

But I'm still of the opinion, no matter what, Americans will not put a commo in the WH.

Well fortunately, Sanders isn't a commo, he's a demo socialo in the euro stylo.

But to each their own. I never thought Americans would elect a white supremo fraudo and serial adultero with a string of bankros to his namo, who ran as a populo but cut taxes for the oligarcho.

You haven't noticed corporations like Ford and Toyota among many others either cancelled moving their manufacturing overseas, or building plants in the States to manufacture their goods, while under " The Appeaser In Chiefs" stints most were in the process or had moved either South to Mexico, or overseas to low taxing nations?

You only "notice" that on FOX News. Elsewhere...
