How should west respond to potential (likely) Russian invasion of Ukraine?

Well there is video of it unloading armored vehicles. Those white containers in the video, are those fuel? If so, then a shot there might have done the job quite nicely

Sinking ships is always positive, but it sounds like they sunk this ship after it would have been the most useful.

Reports now coming in of Russians fragging their officers. Can’t say I blame them.

I’d love to see a wholesale revolt by Russia’s military. That would be awesome.

One way they could deal with these soldiers is to send them back to Russia, albeit without any gear, maybe shoeless too. They would so demoralize the rest of Russia it might soon revolt en masse. The Russians wouldn’t dare put them back in the lines for fear they’d revolt. And if they went back home to Moscow or wherever they’d tell the truth.

Something has to give and soon.

Take the weapons and then you could send them off. There is no reason to dehumanize them.

Two ship moving away from the scene also appear to be on fire (not the first two in the video).

Pretty amazing prediction by recently passed Madeline Albright:

"Instead of paving Russia's path to greatness, invading Ukraine would ensure Mr. Putin's infamy by leaving his country diplomatically isolated, economically crippled and strategically vulnerable in the face of a stronger, more united Western alliance," Albright wrote in an essay in The New York Times on the eve of the war last month. "Ukraine is entitled to its sovereignty, no matter who its neighbors happen to be. In the modern era, great countries accept that, and so must Mr. Putin," Albright wrote. "That is the message undergirding recent Western diplomacy. It defines the difference between a world governed by the rule of law and one answerable to no rules at all."

I prefer to live in a world governed by law.
Quite a prescient take.

I wonder how it comes to be that two major countries, Russia and China are incapable of governing themselves except via terror and police tactics.

Don’t know, but I don’t think it speaks well to human nature.

Putin wants to restore his imagined glory and power of the Soviet Union.

The rony is he doing exactly what the communists did to bring dom the Soviet System

1. Militray acquisition and control of states.
2. Suppression of free speech and media.
3. Treating the west as an adversary.
4. Not integrating into the western free market economy in favor of an oligarchy-kleptocracy.
5. Institutionalized corruption,

So, i have a question. Tucker Carlson's defended his failure to condemn Putin with something along the lines of:
unless Vladimir Putin has personally had you or one of your family members murdered, you really don’t have any right to criticize the guy:
Wasn't this basically the reason Muhammed Ali refused to go to Viet Nam and shoot people? They never done anything to him, personally, so he didn't feel that he had an interest in, or the right to shoot them. He went to jail and there are people on this board STILL upset that he threw his support to the North Vietnamese.
So for those people listing Ali as a traitor (who went to jail for his position), are they putting Fucker Carlson on the same list for the same reason?
Fuck no!
Prove me wrong.
Fuck yes.

You can probaly find the film clip where he states expelicitly he would not go to fight Asian people who did nothing to him. He lost everything he had taking that stand. For that I admire Ali regardless of anything else.

I agree about Ali, but the question as I understood it was whether Republicans (writ large) would reject Tucker Carlson as they have rejected Ali.
NOT HAPPENING.

The sanctions are beginning to bite Russia hard. The US and Europe will also likely experience a recession together with inflation--what we called "stagflation" during the Carter administration.

Gas rationing, food vouchers and hunger: Economic pain from Russia’s war is getting real

I also heard that Putin is demanding gas payments from Germany and Europe in rubles. Does that mean the gas will be shut off unless they comply?
Putin asked his minions to investigate how it could be done. But technically, if the contracts say that the payment is made in euros or dollars, then the contracts would need to be revised, but Europe could just say "no" and see if Russia has the balls to cut off gas.

Interesting to see if such a bluff could work.

We sholud question the rorting from the Unitarian side. That being said Putin has acknolwedged none of the bjectives have been achieved. Today it is reported that Russians near Kiev have pulled back and are taking defensive positions.

In a meting between American and Russian military attaches an America asked a Russian general if he had roots in Ukraine. He was said to have momentarily broke his stoic facade and said he was born in Ukraine and that it was horrible.

I'd say Russian morale is probably rock bottom. Life for a young Russian conscript even without war is probably grim. From the way it is going their training looks poor. Maybe even brutal.

I suppose that that is the threat, but Russia can't really afford to withdraw its one major product from the European market. This announcement did cause the value of the ruble to climb against the dollar. It is now worth almost a full penny. RT has been crowing about that, and this may well be the motive for Putin making the demand--to drive up the value of the ruble. Here is the latest from RT, which reports that Germany says it will continue to pay in euros:

Russia’s ruble payment plan leaves European gas buyers confused

Here is RT's report about Putin requiring rubles, but it says the process for doing so will take around a week to work out.

Putin wants rubles for Russian gas

Note that the content of the English version of RT often differs somewhat from what it puts out in foreign languages. It tends to have a lot more content. If you want to see the longer Russian version, follow this link and then translate the page to English with Google Translate:
