How should west respond to potential (likely) Russian invasion of Ukraine?

As an aside, why in the world would Russia cease to exist if you can't conquer all of Ukraine?
Because Elensky just claimed most of the European Russia for Ukraine. The rest according to Polish thinkers is Tatarstan, Yakutia, and other resource rich new countries which will be controlled by the US/EU. The new map has been drawn already
Worst (for you) case scenario is Russia with puppet regime like Eltsin. It's pretty good (for you) though.

Ukraine has said two Russian airborne command aircraft were shot down on Sunday evening in what amounts to one of the worst days for Moscow’s air force since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian media on Sunday evening reported an A-50 radar early-warning plane was downed on Sunday evening shortly after take-off over the Sea of Azov in the Kyrylivka area of Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine.

A Russian Ilyushin Il-22 airborne command post was also damaged in an attack and forced to make an emergency landing in Anapa on the Russian side of the Sea of Azov.
I can't imagine these are easily replaced now that Russia has been sanctioned into the stone age.
There are 10 active service A-50 and new (better) version is in production-testing.
IL-22 has very little value.
Now, remember 3 Su-34 Kiev regime claimed to shoot down?
Well, turned out it was just one Su-34 and the patriot battery which did that was destroyed shortly after that.
Do the math.
The fucking clowns had to move patriot system which is not mobile close to the front line to shoot down one su-34.
It was destroyed on the way back.

Yeah. Russia doesn't seem to have much in the way of anything but manpower and they're rapidly burning through what equipment they do have. And Ukraine seems to have a sense of how to rub it in. Russia just deployed a new anti-drone system--and it was promptly blown up by a drone. A while back they deployed a new counterbattery radar--and it got popped by artillery.
Complete and utter BS. What we have here is demilitarization of the West. 30% of all western AA systems was sent to Ukraine, and it is being destroyed.

If Russian economy is so great, why are they getting rockets from North Korea?
...crickets...
Because NK really wanted to test them. And because US is getting shells from South Korea.
So Russia had to take weapons from North Korea, that was the agreement between Russia and SK.
Putin needs better allies.

Oh wait he pushes all of them out windows.
Russian Hitler and his FSB get rid of anyone that threatens their control same as German Hitler and his SS.

When can we do the math on the navy side of things.

I also just did some math... Russia is apparently no closer to annexing the nation of Ukraine than they were prior to invading.

Gloating over allegedly winning an invasion through attrition is just sad. But congrats on taking out a Patriot missile battery.

Russian military plane crashes near Ukraine border

  • A Russian military plane with 74 people on board has crashed in the Belgorod region of Russia, near the Ukrainian border, Russian state media reported. The region's governor said all those on board were killed.
  • The cause of the crash is not yet clear and there are conflicting accounts about who or what was on board. Russian state media reported that 65 Ukrainian servicemen were on the plane, being flown to Belgorod ahead of a prisoner swap.
  • But Ukraine's military said the plane was carrying air defense missiles. CNN has not verified either side's claims, and has asked Ukraine for comment on allegations it shot down the plane.

Until now, Turkey and Hungary had been slow-walking NATO membership for Sweden. Both countries have now approved NATO membership for Sweden:

Sweden verges on NATO membership after Turkey vote, Hungary signal

Vladimir Putin has done more than anyone to strengthen the NATO alliance, adding both Sweden and Finland to the alliance. Russia's border to NATO states has greatly expanded with the addition of Finland. Before 2014, NATO had been struggling to justify its existence. After his renewed invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin guaranteed to addition of the Scandinavian holdouts to full membership.

It's a common science fiction trope that when aliens invade, humanity will finally unite against the common enemy.

So, trial run here?
Nice sentiment, but usually it required places like NYC being leveled first.
Yes please
I feel like this is kind of an alarming wish to see a city leveled. You realize that some of your fellow IIDB members live there and have friends and relatives there?

Now now...
Tigers is a Christian. You can't blame them for what they believe.

God probably said it. Or a gospel author. Could be a lot of folks.

BTW: why can't you spell out the elected President of Free Ukraine: Zelensky? This seems like a small gesture of respect on your part. Your soldiers greatly respect Zelensky and honor him by displaying the first initial "Z" on their tanks. They don't a "P" on their tanks for Putler. They display Zs! You should join your fellow countrymen and honor Zelensky

If Ukraine manages to stick it to Moscow who is next? To return to the status quo ante is to invite other rebellions
"other rebellions"??

Ukraine didn't rebel; It was invaded despite being a sovereign country. Even the successor to the Soviet Union recognised the independence of the states that made up the commonwealth.

They even called it the "Commonwealth of Independent States", ffs.
I'm saying that if Ukraine succeeds in escaping that it will encourage others to try. Places that have not yet tried to throw off Moscow's yoke.
I know that's what you are saying; I am pointing out (again) that referring to Ukraine's independence as a "rebellion" or "escaping" is buying in to the false narrative of Russian propaganda that claims that Ukraine is their posession in the first place.

Ukraine has not been a Russian posession since the break up of the Russian Empire. Ukraine declared independence from Russia on 22 January 1918; It became a Soviet posession on 30 December 1922.
I'm not talking about the legal status.

Rather, I'm saying there are other pieces of Russia that would like to leave and if they see Moscow lose in Ukraine they might decide to try.
Belgium didn't "rebel against" or attempt to "escape from" Germany in 1914; Likewise Ukraine is not rebelling against nor escaping from Russia in 2024.

These subtle shades of meaning matter. They shape public opinion. Putin is well aware that public opinion in the US and EU is strongly in favour of assisting Ukraine in defending herself; But is rather less favourable to assisting Ukraine to rebel against (or escape from) Russian authority. The latter requires the (false) presumption that Russia has some right to assert authority over Ukraine.
By Putin's yardstick Ukraine is a rebellious province that needs to be reclaimed. And that's how other parts will see it.
