The solution to both is the same.

To stop people from dying in car accidents, we will need to develop driverless cars that get rid of drivers. Either that or impose tight restrictions on driver licences and car ownership so that only the most competent drivers (which precludes most people) are ever allowed to get behind the wheel.

To stop people from being shot by other people, we will need to get rid of shooters. Either that, or impose tight restrictions on gun ownership and carry permits so that only the most competent and mentally-stable gun owners are ever allowed to have and use such a weapon.

Despite the fact that the person, not the device, is to blame, sometimes the only practical solution is often to take away the devices they use to do harm.

I always say, "Guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people". I've yet to hear of a shooting where the gun did it on its own, without someone to pull the trigger. Or conversely, where a person did it on his own without the aid of a gun. It's combining the two that's deadly.
