The more ridiculous notion is that America stopped being "great" at any point in history, because quite literally at very point we got ourselves shitfaced enough to darken our own image, either through some cock-up in a battle or war we should've stayed out of or through some new "conscriptive" mangling of a legal statute in order to blatantly stereotype and/or belittle or dehumanize whole sections of our own population whilst we dither on about how some "other" country has it worse so we should all either move there or shut up, we still managed to come out at the top of every market, industry and foreign "agreement".

Point is, we never stopped being great jut because a black guy made it into the presidency nor were we les great for entertaining the idea of some lady (not Hilary, cuz no) could be a future president, and we certainly did not stop being great because we find we can abuse less and les of our own people let alone what we do to other countries.

Conservolibertarians and far right, fanatical versions of Republicans and Democrats, for neither side is free from fanatics with their underwear twisted so far into their genitals it burns, will likely just whine no matter what happens. We could develop a way of turning every mountain to gold just so everyone who has a pick axe can delve into it for whatever they can get away with and cure all cancers and other illnesses, and they'd still cry about how the gays are still gay, lesbians still like twats more than dicks, trans people are whatever they say they are, and everybody else is just as normal as all those who are not violent sociopaths.

Even non-violent sociopaths have more sense and more understanding of how empathy works even if they cannot feel it than most of our politicians and doctors do. So until the impossible happens and these individuals do some rather rapid introspection to complete a turnaround in themselves, it'll stay just as great, and just as broken, here in this country.
