Immigration Issues

Abrego has been released from jail. ICE has also been ordered not to re-arrest him.

In the Judge's words:
There is no evidence before the Court that Abrego: has markings or tattoos showing gang affiliation; has working relationships with known MS-13 members; ever told any of the witnesses that he is a MS-13 member; or has ever been affiliated with any sort of gang activity… Based on the record before it, for the Court to find that Abrego is member of or in affiliation with MS-13, it would have to make so many inferences from the Government’s proffered evidence in its favor that such conclusion would border on fanciful,
There was someone here who was so sure Abrego was a gang member.

Fuck!

Abrego has an appointment with ICE in a few days. He got stopped driving a car that had other undocumenteds in it years ago, never charged, and now they are going to charge him with transporting.

If he pleads guilty they will send him to Costa Rica. If he tries to fight it, they will send him to Uganda.

Fuck!

Don't they have to prove he knew they were undocumented?
Are you implying that Trump, MAGA, and ICE are bound by rule of law? How dare you disrespect the POTUS like that?

Re. the Fort Bliss article above:
"ICE is targeting the worst of the worst—including murderers, MS-13 gang members, pedophiles, and rapists.”
Sure, as well as you can 'target' with a blunderbuss, scattershot, quota driven mob.
Arrest them all. There are the "worst of the worst" in there somewhere.

This is what so many people still fail to understand. Just as importantly as laws being ignored were/are the shredding of norms. The Trump/GOP simply doesn't have to answer to anyone for anything.

This nation is at their mercy and the highest authority in the land, SCOTUS, is right there with them.

One thing I think about is that no POTUS in U.S. history has organized paramilitary organizations for strict use against American civilians. There have been incidences of the use in overseas operations (Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders). The CIA and FBI have been used in very limited roles (both by Trump) on American soil, which is a frightening and unprecedented discarding of American norms.

Trump could, and I think will, organize a paramilitary group so that the military won't have to be conflicted when it comes to taking over cities and gunning down citizens.

As a side thought, it's so fucking strange to think the 3rd Amendment could become a thing again although I see it as something that could happen to motels and hotels more than people's homes. OTOH, apartment complexes could work very well too. Both are very similar in basic structure to barracks. Or maybe paramilitary organizations don't count under the never before litigated 3AM?

HPD update: Homeowner shoots, kills 2 men in ski masks, bulletproof vests claiming to be police.

I've started a thread in the Presidential Politics forum for stories and comments on Trump's overall crime reduction efforts using the military and the FBI not related to immigration. Please PM me with Thread and post numbers if there is a post you think I've missed.

A paradigm shift is sweeping across Europe. From Finland to Portugal, from Greece to Ireland, countries across the continent are steadily tightening their immigration policies. What progressive elites used to denounce as ‘xenophobic rhetoric’ barely a decade ago is now being implemented as laws, decrees, and police operations in response to mounting public pressure led by the social and political Right. Reality, pushed forward by popular discontent, has crashed into the immigration debate with full force.

The facts speak for themselves. Austria has become the first EU country to deport a Syrian national back to his country of origin, and Germany has already announced its intention to follow suit—whether it follows through remains to be seen. Greece, meanwhile, has temporarily suspended asylum applications from North African nationals, a decision prompted by a surge in illegal arrivals on the island of Crete. In an unprecedented move, Italy has established migrant centers in Albania, where rejected asylum seekers are detained until deportation.

This tightening also extends to the regularization of migrants. Portugal has overturned a 2018 regulation that allowed tourists to legalize their status after a year of employment and social security contributions. Greece has gone even further, abolishing the possibility for illegal immigrants to apply for residency altogether, even after seven years in the country.

Family reunification policies have also become stricter. France has increased the minimum residency period required to apply from 12 to 18 months and now demands proof of basic French language proficiency. Germany has suspended family reunification for two years for migrants under subsidiary protection—a status granted to those who don’t meet refugee criteria. Austria has frozen reunification procedures for six months, citing overstretched public services.

Border defense has been equally reinforced. Poland has reinstated controls with Germany and Lithuania, fortified its 186-kilometer metal fence, and deployed a 24-hour military presence in response to pressure from Belarus. Finland extended its Border Security Act until 2026, allowing for the immediate return of asylum seekers arriving from Russia. France and the UK have agreed to a “one in, one out” policy in the English Channel to stem the tide of illegal boat crossings.

Beyond political measures, recent months have revealed a surge in public unrest over mass immigration. The most recent example occurred in Torre Pacheco, in the Spanish region of Murcia, where a series of riots involving masked locals left several people injured. The official narrative focuses on ‘far-right groups’ and ‘disinformation,’ but the underlying issue is more complex: overcrowded neighborhoods, overwhelmed social services, and a growing sense of cultural dislocation.

This phenomenon is not unique to Spain. The United Kingdom experienced widespread riots in 2024 after the Southport murders were rumored to have been committed by an immigrant. In Northern Ireland, homes reportedly owned by foreigners were attacked. And while polls indicate that 75% of Europeans support helping refugees, they also show that 75% back stronger EU external borders, and 67% want a common migration policy. In Spain, 70% of the population supports mass deportations.

The message is clear: public patience is wearing thin. Political leaders across Europe—even those long wedded to open-border ideologies—are beginning to adjust course. What was once a fringe demand is fast becoming mainstream policy.

It'a not just the US that is becoming xenophobic and while it might not be in the linked article, I read in a major US news paper the other day that Greece has built something similar to the horrible detention centers mandated by Trump. So much for cultural diversity and helping those who flee from horrific conditions in their countries of origin.

None of those medals stop him from being called "Muhammad" though, now do they?

It'a not just the US that is becoming xenophobic
I don't think any country is becoming xenophobic. What's changing is not the amount of xenophobia, but the degree to which it is socially acceptable.

There's a shift from "You can't say/do that shit, it's racist and evil!" to "Well he is not one of us, so he deserves anything he gets".

And that shift is coming from a very small number of highly influential people. People who can get more power and more wealth by whipping up existing racism, and who either don't know (or don't care) that previous attempts to gain power by harnessing mob prejudices have always ended in tears.

I'm not so sure about that, but I'll have to read more before I know the truth. You do realize that most of the so called free world is starting to turn hard right, don't you?

I was discussing this with a bunch of new atheist friends this morning. The immigration thing in Europe was news to me. Of course it's primarily the Trump supporters in the US who dislike the immigrants. Some of them are beginning to realize how important the immigrants are to our economy, but others remain in denial. At least most are disgusted by the way ICE is treating immigrants. I don't think this is what they expected when they voted for a very psychopathic felon. Then, what does one expect when they get all their fake news from Newsmax or Fox?

You do realize that most of the so called free world gets their cultural cues from a minuscule number of wealthy and powerful media moguls, don't you?

The US is playing catch up; Europe has been becoming more xenophobic for a long time.

Brexit is an excellent example; English people deciding they won't even tolerate immigrants from the EU - white Christians from Poland - because they are too foreign.

Notably the Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish people all opposed Brexit; It was a statement of Englishness, intended to show strength, but actually displaying a horror at having become weak and irrelevant.

Xenophobia has taken longer to really take hold in the US, perhaps because US haters had a home-grown minority, deliberately and forcibly imported by fine upstanding white Americans, on whom to hate.
