Yes, of course leftism is a mental illness, duh!

But, in all fairness, so is rightism. Was the study you're referencing randomized, with a control group? Or is it possible that white liberal women are more likely to receive diagnoses of mental illnesses because they have more opportunities to, because more of them take their problems to therapists, compared to women of non-white colors and conservative women? Perhaps subcultures that encourage their members to keep a stiff upper lip or take their problems to religious counselors have similar rates of mental health conditions but more of these conditions remain undiagnosed. I'm guessing if Pew Research did a study on sin they'd find over half of conservative women have been diagnosed as sinners at some point.

I would say *appears* to be more afflicted. The more you lean right, the less you are likely to admit fears and problems, while the more you lean left, the more likely it is that you will talk about your mental illness.

And I think talking about your mental illness or problems in general is not only good for you in getting help and finding peace of mind, but it's also good for everyone around you to hear as they will feel more at ease in talking about their own problems.

If you can't admit wrong or weakness or problems, they'll just fester. Suppression never means deletion. It'll always find a way out. Example, people who claim some kind of sexual purity and narrow, condemnatory, judgmental morality around sex often end up in headlines exposing their hypocrisy and sometimes outright sex crimes.

The missing piece in the American education system: communication, impulse control, teamwork, thoughtful decision making: emotional intelligence. And doing so with children that look like the United States, not children that look like Boise, ID. Children who are raised in a community that shields and isolates them from those who are different will likely grow to be emotionally stunted adults who do not understand the world outside their womb-like community. They live in emotionally stunted, blissfully ignorant communities all across the US. We cannot save their parents but perhaps we can save the children.

Correlation versus Causation. Conservatives love pointing out correlations and using them to not only exert structures, removing rights, freedoms, and choice, but also to take charge and increase power over others. Conservatives want to bring us back in time to this.

What do you actually see here? Because there isn't a single group of crazy lesbian, liberal millenials with pussy hats screaming as the conservatives want you to believe. There are several trends, involving correlations and they all play a role in making one group have a higher number in the chart.

1. The first trend to notice is by age. Note that the chart in one sense is THE OPPOSITE of what you expect since every young person with a high percent should also be positive when they are older so the older people's numbers should all be higher than the younger ones. SO...What is going on here that older people are more inclined to say they've never had a diagnosis of a mental health condition? Is it that doctor's tend not to ask since the patient is so old that getting them in therapy or to change their ways or compared to other health issues, it's not much of a thing? Or do older people operate from a different perspective about defining their mental health and so respond differently to survey questions? Has society's willingness to accept mental health conditions, diagnose them, ask about them changed? or been changing over time to create this trend?
2. There seems to be a small difference in liberal versus conservative numbers grouped by age so that persons of the same age group have slightly higher numbers than conservatives. Is this because of science and medical awareness and more likely admission of mental health issues? Probably.
3. Finally, there is a difference by sex. And of course there are some biological differences such as women going through post-partum depression. It's also well-known that women are more emotionally intelligent than men and so their rates of answering honestly can be expected to be higher for both self-realization and for getting what they need. So basically older people tend not to be involved in the cultural trend of mental health awareness. Same is true with conservatives and men. If you look at actual statistics such as from the link above,

• 77% of men polled have suffered with anxiety/stress/depression
• The biggest pressures in men’s life are work (32%), finance (31%) and health (23%)
• The majority of men claim their mental health is having a negative impact on their work performance, parenting ability and relationships in particular
• 40% of men polled said it would take thoughts of suicide or self-harm to compel them to seek professional help

There are clearly some things going on here in regard to groups and how they perceive mental health and conservatives will definitely try to use these correlations to their own in-group benefit.
