January 6 Hearings Live

There was more footage shown tonight on the Rachel Maddow Show. Upon seeing it I was very surprised there was not far more bloodshed than there was.

She led off with the report on why Twitter banned him for life. His last tweet was "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th." Twitter says it was likely to incite further violence. That is, it's being interpreted "on and off Twitter" as a signal that he won't be there so do your worst.

Video shows Oregon Rep. Mike Nearman open Capitol door to far-right demonstrators

Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 21, as his fellow lawmakers met upstairs, state Rep. Mike Nearman walked casually out of the Oregon Capitol.

Video surveillance footage shows Nearman did not break stride as he passed far-right demonstrators gathered immediately outside the door, demanding entrance to a building closed to the public because of COVID-19. Nor did Nearman take any steps to stop those demonstrators as they held ajar the door he had just opened and immediately began signaling others to crowd inside.

In short, the footage obtained by OPB Friday morning shows clearly what House Speaker Tina Kotek and others have described in recent days: Nearman appearing to — blatantly, purposefully — allow an incursion into the state Capitol.

He used the POTUS account, which the govt. owns, to tweet a message about Twitter being anti free speech.

It was deleted.
Wow. Who'd a thunk twitter had the bigger banhammer ...?

McConnell must be shitting in his pants.

ETA - Especially given Lisa Murkowski's virtual ultimatum.

Yesterday, we asked @AppStore and @GooglePlay to enforce their own Terms of Service on Parler based on the sheer number of violent threats on the platform with #PullParler.

Look at the VERY CLEAR terms set by these two app stores below:

(Then an excursion into the sort of content that's been on Parler recently. Like threatening a second attack and threatening VP Mike Pence.)

These are the Terms for both user-generated and Objectionable Content as published by @Apple’s @appstore.

The threats and inability for Parler to moderate these violent threats on their app should disqualify the app instantly from the AppStore. #PullParler

Over on @GooglePlay, the Terms of Service are even more clear, forbidding both violence and hate explicitly as well as harassment on any app distributed by the store.

Again, @google has created these rules *themselves*. They should enforce their own policies. #PullParler

There is precedent for this enforcement on both of these platforms, with @AppStore turning away Gab and @GooglePlay banning the same app in 2017 for very similar content to Parler.

They should apply the same principles here.

#PullParler

No corporations should aid apps openly allowing calls to violence, let alone those speaking out against it.

As we now know, words matter. Calls to violence turn into real violence.

@AppStore and @GooglePlay need to #PullParler.

UPDATE: The calls for violence over on Parler are getting much, much worse.

There are now open calls for the murder of police officers and planning for violence on January 20th

This obviously severely violates the law, much less the @AppStore and @GooglePlay rules.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Good to see this development from @Apple. @GooglePlay what are you going to do about apps being used to organize violence on your platform? https://t.co/wWVSERcRSH" / Twitter

Apple Has Threatened To Ban Parler From The App Store - "The social networking app favored by conservatives has been given 24 hours to institute a moderation policy."

Twitter Safety on Twitter: "After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence. https://t.co/CBpE1I6j8Y" / Twitter
noting
Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
On January 8, 2021, President Donald J. Trump tweeted:

“The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

Shortly thereafter, the President tweeted:

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Due to the ongoing tensions in the United States, and an uptick in the global conversation in regards to the people who violently stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks. After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.

Geoff Bennett on Twitter: "Wow. Included in Twitter’s statement, explaining why it banned Trump: “Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021.”" / Twitter
That's on Sunday, and nobody would be at work in them.

But January 20 is a date to watch out for, because that's when Joe Biden will get inaugurated, and that's when Trump's reign will come to an end.

Scott MacFarlane on Twitter: "WOW. This is the US Capitol Police Board. Its four members govern the Capitol Police, administer security and serve as liasons to legislators. THREE OF THE FOUR RESIGNED YESTERDAY. (pic link)" / Twitter

It was an embarrassing failure. Especially when it would have been simple to fall back to the doors.

Congresswoman Marie Newman on Twitter: "While it feels like years ago, this photo is from Sunday. ..." / Twitter
While it feels like years ago, this photo is from Sunday.

I couldn't imagine that the same room where I was being sworn in as Congresswoman would days later be desecrated by terrorists.

This week is not close to what I pictured but I've never felt stronger about why we're here.

We will pursue justice for those responsible for this week's assault on our nation's Capitol. We will hold each of them accountable for the lives lost and hundreds more that were at risk.

And we will impeach President Trump.

Wednesday's attack serves as a reminder of what we're fighting for: a stronger, more equitable nation not ruled by division and hate.

It is certainly one of the darkest times in American history, but our commitment to that fight has not weathered.

My heartfelt thanks go out to all #IL03 residents, families and neighbors who not only reached out this week to ensure my staff and I were safe but to voice their continued support as we work to build back the country we all love.

And thank you to the administrative, engineering, custodial and maintenance Capitol staff whose bravery and courage helped keep everyone safe on that horrible day. We are all forever in your debt.

The next few weeks/months are going to be interesting and fun as the FBI rounds up all these morons. I wonder how many they'll actually arrest before they feel like they've made their point?

New: Congrats to everyone who photographed themselves doing crimes in the Capitol. It's loaded with phone location trackers, and those (unmasked) pics could work great in a facial-recognition scan. Hundreds of FBI agents are working the case as we speak

:D

I laughed at John Scalzi's take on the light police response:

I don’t really know what to think of it, to be honest. The most charitable take on it is that the Capitol Hill police genuinely thought these Trump dimsurrectionists were harmless, in which case this was a massive failure of intelligence and intelligence-gathering, since, again, it’s not like these folks were subtle about their plans. As people noted, these motherfuckers had merchandise made up for the event; there were people wandering about with “CIVIL WAR: JAN 6 2021” hoodies.
