January 6 Hearings Live

Likely laws violated. And counting.

18 U.S. Code § 2384 - Seditious conspiracy

If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

Twenty years will do.

And for those coming back later this month armed? 💀⚰️💀

With all these mugshots coming in, the "how it started, how it's going" memes are just too easy.

Right-wing commentator Mark Levin: "have suspended my own Twitter account in protest against Twitter's fascism. I ask all my followers to join me now on Parler and Rumble."

I thought the right wing despised “cancel culture”.

Or if MMC isn't being a lazy bum, he wants one last triumph over the Democrats in his last days as Majority Leader.

Matt Pearce 🦅 on Twitter: "It’s a little surreal to see the traditional anti-censorship discourse newly applied to the most powerful man in the world right after he incited a mob that attacked a rival branch of government to overturn a free and fair election." / Twitter

Craig Silverman on Twitter: "NEW: A network of YouTube channels sprung up after the election as part of a disinfo campaign to keep Trump in office. They now have more than 1m subscribers and 10s of millions of views.

I found they’re connected to pro-Trump media outlet Epoch Times: (link)" / Twitter

A YouTube Network Sprang Up To Pump Out Pro-Trump Misinformation After He Lost - "A group of channels connected to the Epoch Times is pumping out hoaxes and lies without identifying their connections to the right-wing newspaper."
Joan Donovan, research director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard, told BuzzFeed News the network of channels is “alarming, but not surprising” because the platform has failed to rein in operations like the Epoch Times. She called the channels dark propaganda influence campaigns that obscure their true origins.

“Platform companies should be aware of this by now and guard against it,” she said. “If people believe they are viewing news when they are really seeing dark propaganda, what responsibility does YouTube have to limit or label this content? Years ago, the openness of YouTube was a benefit to artists, activists, and creative types, but YouTube is now a major component of scaling disinformation campaigns.”
I myself have gotten ads for the Epoch Times a lot of times. I've checked it out, but much of it is paywalled, and I don't think that it's worth the money to look inside its paywall.

NBC News on Twitter: "JUST IN: 4-page draft article of impeachment against President Trump that Reps. Raskin, Lieu, Cicilline are planning to introduce Monday: "Incitement of insurrection" (link to pix of text)" / Twitter
then
Brian Schatz on Twitter: "The most essential aspect is the disqualification from holding any future office. And that’s why we should do this, even if the 25th is invoked, even if Trump calms down and flies to Florida and the threat wanes. It’s not just about the next 12 days. It’s about America’s future." / Twitter

Behind the Democrats' new push to impeach President Trump
IO was already working on articles of impeachment after it turned up that Trump had tried to bully Brad Raffensperger into getting him some votes.
As the rioters raged under the Capitol dome, members of Congress were evacuated to the secure location where Omar got to work revising her articles of impeachment and drumming up support for an effort to remove Trump from office for inciting the violence. Omar, who became one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress after she was elected in 2018, has received numerous death threats. As a result, when the lawmakers were evacuated, she was taken to a room with congressional leadership. Inside, the source said she got the backing of House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
The Democrats had a 4-hour conference call on Friday where they discussed various possibilities.
“If Pelosi comes back and says Biden said, ‘Impeach the motherf***er,’ that’s what we’re going to do,” said the staffer, who requested anonymity to discuss the confidential caucus call.

...
After Omar drafted her articles of impeachment, she was followed by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and a resolution was circulated by three congressmen: David Cicilline, Ted Lieu, and Jamie Raskin. Pelosi ultimately opted to move forward with Raskin’s resolution.

The source said the lawmakers are working collaboratively. Cicilline, Lieu, and Raskin were co-leads on Omar’s legislation while she was an original co-sponsor of theirs. The source described the thinking among the Democrats leading the impeachment push as “let a thousand flowers bloom.”

...
On the caucus call, the staffer said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who led the last impeachment trial, was focused on the 25th Amendment. Schiff discussed “fast-tracking” a bill Raskin introduced that would have established a commission on presidential capacity which could work with the vice president to declare the president unfit.
Katie Porter says that she was stuck in her office with one other Congressmember and two staffers.

Impeachment has Overwhelming Support | Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - YouTube - AOC hid somewhere for several hours, and she and several other Congresspeople considered it a serious possibility that they could be murdered by the Capitol attackers. Rep. Grace Meng called her family to notify them that she might not have much longer to live.

Democrats Ready Impeachment Charge Against Trump for Inciting Capitol Mob - The New York Times
At the White House, Mr. Trump struck a defiant tone, insisting that he would remain a potent force in American politics as aides and allies abandoned him and his post-presidential prospects turned increasingly bleak. Behind closed doors, he made clear that he would not resign and expressed regret about releasing a video on Thursday committing to a peaceful transition of power and condemning the violence at the Capitol that he had egged on a day before.
So much for his concession. I wouldn't be surprised if he was repeating something that some staffer wrote.
Among enraged Democrats, an expedited impeachment appeared to be the most attractive option to remove Mr. Trump and register their outrage at his role in encouraging what became an insurrection. Roughly 170 of them in the House had signed onto a single article that Representatives David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Ted Lieu of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland and others intended to introduce on Monday, charging the president with “willfully inciting violence against the government of the United States.”

...
Even Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader and one of Mr. Trump’s most influential allies for the past four years, told confidants he was done with Donald Trump. Mr. McConnell did not directly weigh on a possible impeachment case, but he circulated a memo to senators making clear that under the Senate’s current rules, no trial could effectively be convened before Jan. 20, after Mr. Trump leaves office and Mr. Biden is sworn in, unless all 100 senators agreed to allow it sooner.
How convenient. Wanting to have it both ways on Trump, it seems.
Republicans who only days before had led the charge to overturn Mr. Trump’s electoral defeat said impeaching him now would shatter the unity that was called for after the Capitol siege.

“Impeaching the president with just 12 days left in his term will only divide our country more,” said Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican leader, just a day after he voted twice to overturn Mr. Biden’s legitimate victory in key swing states.
What weepy nonsense.

Impeachment also cancels the presidential pension which is quite generous.

Seen elsewhere: Trump is going to be impeached more times than he's won elections.
