Today was the opening day of the hush money trial where Trump is accused of paying off Stormy Daniels for some reason instead of just because.

Jury selection began today with over 50 potential jurists being sent home, mostly by Trump's lawyers for failing to properly score Mar o Lago's "vaunted" Chocolate Cake on a scale of 1 to 5. The answer they insisted was "infinity".

In other news, lead Trump attorney Alina Habba suggested they might file an appeal against themselves for dismissing two or three jurists unfairly.

In related news: He looks like absolute warmed over shit. I mean, run hard and put away wet.

Yeah, I caught a little on MSNBC. They said it looked like he had fallen asleep.

Isn't his story something like, I didn't have sex with her, but I paid 130 grand so my dear wife Melania wouldn't hear any nasty rumors about me? This, from the cheapest deadbeat of 'em all (and the Christian Right's hero.) Philip Seymour Hoffman should still be alive -- he could play this bloated tadpole to perfection.

Yeah, the problem with that story is that it is in itself an admission of guilt.

Paying hush money wasn't unlawful; Paying out money from campaign funds without disclosing where it went was unlawful.

His only real defenses here would be to show that his disclosure of the payment as "legal expense" was an adequate disclosure to meet the requirements for political campaign fund expenditure (it's not); Or to claim that he didn't make the payment at all (but he did, and he has repeatedly admitted that he did).

As long as the prosecution has done their homework, and crossed every i and dotted every t, it should be an open and shut case.

Of course, we can expect the Chewbacca defense; It's the only legal avenue left open.

One thing I've noticed is that while Trump is bombastic and belligerent at his rallies and whenever the cameras are on him at public appearances, he's a different animal in court or at a deposition. On some level he seems to grasp that "oh shit, this is serious now" and pulls way back on his...combative nature. Not so much a cornered animal, but more like a puppy that's been smacked across the nose with a rolled up newspaper. He pontificates on the way in, makes an angry statement on the way out, but in the courtroom? He's...cowed. He seems to have figured that he can't have a tantrum in court and that he has to save it for outside when the flashbulbs are going off. Or on Truth Social where nobody can tell him to STFU.

Here's the rub, for DJT: the trial is estimated to take six to eight weeks. He has to be there. He has to sit there. Eight weeks from today is June 10th. I think the pile-on of days, the ocean of words, the parade of hated witnesses, the prosecutors having their say...all these things will drive him crazy. He can't watch TV while he's in court. He can't spit a mouthful of invective at the people who are testifying. He is far too immature for all of that, and never in his life has he had to face up to consequences like these. I really can't imagine that he will acquiesce to the trial procedure, because everyone should surely see that he should be immune to it. I think we're going to see some really crazy moments, I just can't imagine what they will be. He ended up in E. Jean's case exchanging snark with the judge. And in that trial, he was free to bolt out of the room and vent for the cameras. Any takers? Who here would bet that Trump can sit still and behave himself for six, seven, eight weeks?

Yeah, no, not taking your bet.
The guy on DAY ONE looks like he hasn’t slept in three days. After eight weeks?
I don’t know if they have invented the drugs that might keep him on this planet.

Nope. He's only been alive for 77 years. I'd say 10 days to a fortnight max.

Oh wait, you mean 6-8 weeks consecutively and not in his lifetime total? Have you been drinking?

I know this was supposed to be a funny thread but is has gotten serious so I will send it to Presidential Politics.

The irony of him asking the judge to allow him to go to Barron's graduation: when Melanoma was pregnant with him he was having sex with a porn star that he is now on trial for hush money to cover it up. 😼

You can't make this shit up.

During jury selection, a female octogenarian journalist indicated she'd have no problem being impartial in the Trump trial, though she did ask whether a conviction could slow down the appeal in her case.

Reuters reporting that the trial is going a lot better in Trump's dreams, with 3 "10's" and 2 "9's" selected for the jury. The judge will also allow Trump to speak "personally" with the jury for closing arguments.

I wonder if the judge could work in the question, "Is that the one your wife was pregnant with while you were banging the porn star?". While denying the request.
