America has always been an extremely violent country. We are a nation that enslaved blacks, invaded Mexico and slaughtered native Americans. To be fare, we purchased mostly African peoples who were kidnapped, enslaved and transported across the ocean where survivors were purchased. We kept any children born to the enslaved peoples as slaves fir generations, for a couple of centuries.

To be fair, let's not forget that Europeans and natives of Africa sold most of the slaves to America, and the British shoved all what they called white trash to America and most of them became indentured servants. So, it's not just our fucked up country. It's a human thing.. In fact, whenever Steven Colbert does his little questionnaire and he asks who is the scariest animal, my answer is always Humans.

On other other hand, when he asks if you only had one song to listen to for the rest of your life, I always think of "Caravan of Love" by the Isley Brothers, so humans have both good and bad sides, but guns make it easier for the bad guys to kill.

I’d like to correct what I see as a misconception. Trump supporters are not necessarily conservative (certainly not in the traditional sense).

Many are conservative by the definition I learned in high school: A conservative is someone who wishes to either maintain the status quo or return to a period of time in the past.

Alternatively a conservative is someone who wishes to keep what is good and works and change what is not good and/or not working.

That is a description of rational behavior not political ideology.

One could hope (sadly in vain) that political ideology would correspond to rational behaviour
