his DOGE department was turned into simply being the department responsible for keeping government computer systems updated with a new name. But now it looks like he is using it to raid government computers. Locking personnel management workers out of the system.

Seems that there has to be something illegal in this.
Especially considering Galaxy Brain is not an official employee.

Since when has that stopped Trump?

Something else Musk is trying to do is gain access to the Treasury's Payment System which issues TRILLIONS of dollars in checks and bank transfers.

At first I wondered why he wanted that. Surely he won't stoop to the level of the Trump family and actually steal some of the moolah.

Then a possible explanation struck me. Information is power. The data generated automatically by Xwitter posts is worth billions. The data available when Mush is snooping on the entirety of federal spending -- names, dates, dollar amounts, type of and reason for payment -- must have HUGE value.

In the unlikely event that remaining regulators, if any, prevent Musk from getting overt access to that data, it's likely that his intimacy with the Psychopath-in-Chief will allow him covert access.

I was the Cassandra, shrieking that Trump-47 would be MUCH different from Trump-45 but very few believed me. Now I'm discovering that I wasn't pessimistic enough!

I think almost everyone here knew that 47 would be worse than 45, but I agree that it's even worse than we expected. All of my friends knew that Trump 47 would be much worse, but a few of my neighbors still voted for him. The primary problem is that the cowardly Republicans in Congress aren't doing anything to stop him. What will it take, if anything to get them to grow a pair? I still see Trump signs up in my neighborhood. I read a piece this morning about an 87 year old man who adores Trump and doesn't understand why some of us don't. My brother in law keeps defending him, and despite all of his formal education, he doesn't have a clue as to how dangerous Trump is. How did this happen! Those of us who understood the danger, don't understand how so many people don't get it.

I found an article about Musk getting into the financial data.

https://www.finance.senate.gov/chai...-highly-sensitive-us-treasury-payments-system

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., demanded answers from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent today following a report that personnel affiliated with Elon Musk have sought access to a highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system. That system, which is maintained by non-political staff, disperses trillions of dollars each year, such as Social Security and Medicare benefits, tax credits for individuals and businesses, grants and payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk-owned companies.

Senator Wyden wrote in a new letter: “To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy. I am deeply concerned that following the federal grant and loan freeze earlier this week, these officials associated with Musk may have intended to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to any number of programs. I can think of no good reason why political operators who have demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law would need access to these sensitive, mission-critical systems … The federal government is in a financially precarious position, currently utilizing accounting maneuvers to continue paying its bills since it reached the debt limit at the beginning of the year. I am concerned that mismanagement of these payment systems could threaten the full faith and credit of the United States.”

His letter continued: “The press has previously reported that Musk was denied a high-level clearance to access the government’s most sensitive secrets. I am concerned that Musk’s enormous business operation in China -- a country whose intelligence agencies have stolen vast amounts of sensitive data about Americans, including U.S. government employee data by hacking U.S. government systems -- endangers U.S. cybersecurity and creates conflicts of interest that make his access to these systems a national security risk.”

The full text of the letter is available here. The questions posed in the letter follow below.

  1. Have officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE requested access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems? If so, please provide the identities of those individuals.
  2. Has the Treasury Department granted Bureau of Fiscal Service payment systems access to officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE? If so, please provide the following information:
    1. The legal authority under which the Treasury Department granted access to any of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems to officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE
    2. A detailed description of why the Treasury Department gave officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE and the intended changes to the system that merits such access
    3. A list of all officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE who have been granted access to the Fiscal Services Payment Systems.
    4. Copies of all communications between officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE and Treasury staff related to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems.
  3. Has the Treasury Department given access to payment system databases related to the disbursement of Social Security and Medicare benefits? If so, why?
  4. Has the Treasury Department conducted any screenings, background checks, screening of security clearances or other vetting of officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE? If so, please describe these efforts and whether they took place prior to granting officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE access to the Fiscal Service’s payment systems.
  5. Has the Treasury Department done any vetting of potential conflicts of interest posed by Elon Musk’s significant business operations in China prior to granting him access to the Fiscal Service’s payment systems or any other Treasury databases?
  6. Please describe what information security measures and other operational security steps will be taken to ensure that providing officials associated with Elon Musk or DOGE such access does not result in hackers and foreign spies breaching or otherwise gaining access to the Fiscal Service’s payment systems.

Should those of us who's primary income comes from SS be concerned. A lot of Trump supporters rely on SS. Hmmm. What the fuck were they thinking?

I've had to run some errands today but was just going to post the link in the OP.

I am urging everyone to share this info far and wide and to contact every single senator and congressperson you can and DEMAND that Musk's unwarranted and unprecedented and likely illegal access to data of US citizens and government agencies workings be stopped IMMEDIATELY.

I wouldn’t have given the secretary two weeks to answer. At the rate the new administration is going a ton of damage can be done before he gets answers.

My son, who I've mentioned is a federal employee already knew about this. He said he's keeping tabs on things. Since my two Senators are Dems, I imagine they know about this. My representative is a Trump endorsed asshole, so I don't expect anything from him. To be honest, I'll have to look up his name. Maybe I will send him an email, but I don't expect that to help.

This is about the most dangerous thing I can remember happening in government in my lifetime.

I cannot imagine the righties being okay with Musk et al being able to rifle through their personal information. Hell, they've been known to shoot at census takers.

What I'm about to post is part of an article that just came out in the NYTimes. It won't let me share it yet as it's part of a long list of articles. I'm just quote the necessary stuff.

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02/01/us/trump-tariffs-news#treasury-department-payments-system

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave representatives of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency full access to the federal payment system late on Friday, according to three people familiar with the change, handing Elon Musk and the team he is leading a powerful tool to monitor and potentially limit government spending.

The new authority follows a standoff this week with a top Treasury official who had resisted allowing Mr. Musk’s lieutenants into the department’s payment system, which sends out money on behalf of the entire federal government. The official, a career civil servant named David Lebryk, was put on leave and then suddenly retired on Friday after the dispute, according to people familiar with his exit.

The system could give the Trump administration another mechanism to attempt to unilaterally restrict disbursement of money approved for specific purposes by Congress, a push that has faced legal roadblocks.

Mr. Musk, who has been given wide latitude by President Trump to find ways to slash government spending, has recently fixated on Treasury’s payment processes, criticizing the department in a social media post on Saturday for not rejecting more payments as fraudulent or improper.

It is not clear whether the team led by Mr. Musk, the world’s wealthiest man, has blocked any payments since gaining access to the system.

So, Trump and company are giving Musk and company access to this information. Fuck!

Elon Musk
@elonmusk

The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups.

They literally never denied a payment in their entire career.

Not even once.
Treasury payment officers just cuts the checks they are instructed to cut. Decisions of to whom and for how much comes from elsewhere.

We are doomed by people who have no idea how our government works.

It's not so much that they don't know how government works, as that they do know that they can depend upon the American people not to know how government works.

When you tell people that there are Treasury payment approval officers who have literally never denied a payment in their entire career, most of your audience don't go "Well, duh. That's not their job". Most of your audience instead go "OMG that's outrageous! Thank God we have finally got a President who will punish these evildoers!!"

Populism at its finest. Tear down everything that simpletons cannot be bothered to comprehend.

Musk can do no wrong. He owned the libs. He only has their best interest at heart. It is perfectly okay for him use the government to force companies to buy ad space on his platform. Even better if he can steal data from government databases to further own the libs.
