Split New York City Mayoral Race

To notify a split thread.
I'd say Mamdami hasn't achieved jack yet, so... maybe want to wait for some results first.
Mamdami[sic] is a rival supervillain though, not a hero.
Again, he hasn't done anything yet! For a guy with so little in the way of actions in governance forget any benefits or costs to them, he has managed quite a bit of scorn and praise.
Also, while Trump wears enough makeup to be a clown, he isn't quite up to the level of antagonist that the Joker is. He is more of a Condiment King sort of villain. He just has remarkably capable henchmen.
Henchman for whom though?
Heritage Foundation and the Russian oligarchy.

Maybe better to ask what it means to the people using the label. "Socialism"in the US has long meant something more restrained than big S Socialism.
That's why I asked Zipr what it means to him.

This is a thread about the NYC mayoral election.
We already know what "socialism" means to Democratic Socialists of America. They state in their constitution that they "reject an economic order based on private profit" and that they support a "social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, [and] equitable distribution". That is "big S Socialism" in the Marxist framework.
We also know what "socialism" means to Mamdani himself. He stated, in a DSA conference speech that his goal is to "win socialism" by "seizing the means of production". He talked about "abolishing private property" in the housing market in an interview. He paraphrased Karl Marx' words in a tweet.
Even in the days of Eugene Debs, the socialists weren't looking to seize all the industry. They wanted protections for necessities (such as public utilities) and workers rights. Communists existed in the US, but they fared much much worse than the Socialists.
But Debs was a thoroughly American/western politician. Mamdani is not. His identity is Indian and Ugandan, and "not American at all" as his mother says.
And he himself states himself that his political sensibilities are shaped by the Third World.
For example, this is what he says during that infamous Uncivilized Media interview where he ate rice with bare hands:

Note also his irrational obsession with Israel. What does scarfing down biryani, a South Asian dish, have to do with "defeating occupation"?

This is the type of person Mamdani surrounds himself with as he prepares to take over mayor's office:

Bigwig on Zohran Mamdani’s transition team railed against Jews, questioned gay rights in vile unearthed posts: ‘Horror show’

NY Post said:
A bigwig on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s transition team spewed hatred against Jews and Israel and questioned gay rights in a series of odious social media posts from a decade ago.
Hassaan Chaudhary, who identifies himself as newly appointed political director for Mamdani’s transition and inaugural committee on LinkedIn, used the word “Jew” as a slur, and even praised former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who infamously said Israel is “a cancer which will be eliminated soon.”
Chaudhary, who was the director of Muslim engagement for the Mamdani campaign, also described Israel as a “bloody country” and a “barbaric nation” in the posts — some of which date back to when he was 18 years old.

Disgusting!

Again, he hasn't done anything yet! For a guy with so little in the way of actions in governance forget any benefits or costs to them, he has managed quite a bit of scorn and praise.
We have his record as state legislator, where he spewed unvarnished Marxist rhetoric.
Heritage Foundation and the Russian oligarchy.
Heritage sure, but I think the Russian connection is way overblown. He did not throw Ukraine under the bus nearly as hard as he could have, and would have if he was really Putin's henchman. And he also supports domestic oil and gas fracking, and has reversed Obama's idiotic decision to stop construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline which had almost been completed by then. Since Russia is heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, hamstringing US production greatly benefits the Russian government.

Far leftists who both oppose BOTH domestic fossil energy production and western help for Ukraine are far better candidates for being Russian mooks.

Mamdani put forward 20 legislative bills in the state legislature. That's great. It means he's a hard worker and understands how to write laws. Of course, only 3 passed because he pushed the envelope, but pushing against what we have now is good. There's a whole infrastructure in place that will make things work in a moderate, reasonable manner--Mamdani's not a dictator, nor trying to be Trump. I know that is difficult for some people (   ) to get.

“Marxist rhetoric”, unvarnished no less!!! Is that worse than eating rice barehanded?

In your rush to defend Trump, you conflate Putin with Russian oligarchy.

Mamdani supports an Islamist candidate for NY state assembly.

Zohran Mamdani backing controversial CAIR-linked NY assembly candidate – who has made disturbing 9/11 comments
NY Post said:
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is reportedly supporting a candidate for state Assembly linked to the Council on American-Islamic Relations — and who once described 9/11 as a terror attack that a “couple of people did.”
Mamdani’s backing of Aber Kawas, a longtime Palestinian-American activist, was relayed by a member of his mayoral transition team during a closed-door Democratic Socialists of America meeting in Manhattan last week, according to a Daily News report.
[...]
“The system of capitalism and racism and white supremacy et cetera – and Islamophobia – have all been used to colonize lands, to take resources from other people and so this is a long trajectory and were just seeing the manifestations of that continuation with 9/11,” she said in one unearthed clip, posted by social media sleuth Drew Pavlou.
“The idea we have to apologize for a terror attack that a couple of people did and then there is no apology or reparations for genocides and for slavery, et cetera – is something I find reprehensible,” she continued.

Another article about her:
Mamdani’s first endorsement called Al Qaeda terrorist a hero
World Israel News said:
Aber Kawas claims that her activism began when her illegal alien father was deported after being arrested for a crime in New Jersey. Now she’s Zohran Mamdani’s first endorsement.
Kawas had described Fahad Hashmi, convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda, and the Hamas fundraisers known as the ‘Holy Land 5” as “imprisoned heroes” and “living martyrs.”
(Mamdani had previously also expressed his support for the jailed Hamas fundraisers.)
“A father of a friend, a brother of a friend, a cousin of a friend, a friend of a friend—from Fahad Hashmi to the Holy Land 5, Tarek Mahena, or Muhammad Soltan, etc., sometimes it really strikes me how little of a degree of separation we all have from these imprisoned heroes. I often reflect about how in a more just world these names would not have just been headlines to me; I would have probably met them, organized with them, or even visited their households,” the Islamist activist backed by Mamdani and the DSA to represent a Latino district wrote.
[...]
Despite the district’s current DSA Assemblywoman Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas putting her Latino DSA chief up for the role, Mamdani and the DSA went with the Islamist instead because, according to Kawas’ director, “we have to actually run a Palestinian Arab in this race because we need to draw the fire of the Israeli lobby” so that the Jews “don’t run things.”
Kawas, like Mamdani, had just moved to Queens a year before the race to take over the borough.
Her qualifications have nothing to do with the Latino district that she and Mamdani have carpetbagged their way into, just her Islamist credentials through Linda Sarsour’s local Islamist group and through Muslim Brotherhood groups such as CAIR and the MSA student group.

The mask is already slipping, and he hasn't even taken power yet.

Derec, the election is over. You don't have to keep spouting negative election advertisements.
The election may be over, but bad times for NYC are just coming.

Living in NYC, I’ll be the judge of that. You know nothing about the city,

I do notice that our wonderful capitalist system has left the streets littered with suffering homeless. And has made it difficult for even so-called middle class people to make ends meet. The average person struggles mightily while the underserving wealthy frolic. Debs inveighed against this state affairs a hundred years ago, and he was right then and is right now,

“Marxist rhetoric”, unvarnished no less!!! Is that worse than eating rice barehanded?
Yes. Would you be as dismissive if a recently elected candidate had spewed unvarnished fascist rhetoric instead?
A mayoral candidate? Probably.

Distinction without a difference.
Perhaps to sloppy thinkers and fear mongerers.
