NFL 2024

1) Jared Goff - QB of the best team in the league, makes all of the throws, doesn't make many mistakes. Not bad for a former #1 pick who got dumped by his team. But he wins only if voters have gotten tired of casting ballots for the other guy.
I think it would be a toss up between Goff and Amon Ra St. Brown.

Bucs just fell short of claiming wins over the two declared best teams and thus deserving being crowned the best team, because of failure to go for two in the most obvious situation possible for when you should go for 2 and a win instead of a kick and a tie.

Generally it is about cost and reward of risk. However, in this case, it isn't even arguably about that.

While going for 2 pts is effectively coin-flipping the outcome of the game... which in itself is a risk, the risk of not doing so also carries the possibility of not touching the ball on offense again. Going for two isn't as much a risk as you, in this moment, have the best opportunity to win the game. Guaranteed. Arguably, it is higher risk not to go for two. Not going for two makes it much easier to ensure OT, but ensuring OT isn't ensuring possession and without possession, winning is much much harder.

As noted, going for 2 pts here is the only viable option to try and win the game. Giving Mahomes the ball in OT is a very bad idea.

Meanwhile, Patriots win streak ended at season high of 1. There were more penalties in the game than there were plays without penalties. Okay, that might not be true, but there were a lot of penalties. Maye ran the ball a lot, which was great until he kept taking hits after getting a first down. He might have run in for a TD, but I can't remember if it was called back in a penalty. Game was relatively close, hence OT and all, but it was clearly a meeting between two mediocre teams.

Looks like the Lions have one of the best records in the NFL. WOW! Never thought I'd live to see that. Might live to see the Saints and the Lions win a Super Bowl.

What I was thinking at the time.
You’d have to think you’re a WAY better team than your opponent on both sides of the ball to logically opt for overtime.

The officials turning a blind eye to a flagrant false start on the play before the game-winner didn't help. Chiefs always get the non-calls.

My Cardinals are 5-4 and lead their division.
But I've been a fan of theirs too long to get my hopes up.

It sucks but not as bad as it was when we were in the same division. The Eagles are one of the handful of teams the Cards have an all-time winning record against.

What’s it like being surrounded by Eagles fans?
Probably the same way Raiders fans feel when more than half of the stadium is filled with opposing fans. Vegas is a bucket trip list for NFL fans. They get to go to Sin City and see their team whoop ass on my team.

I don't like it buy maybe if the Raiders didn't put such a shitty product on the field year after year, opposing fans might stop showing up in such large numbers.

The Bears were 4-4. Their result with the Patriots made them look more like an 0-9 team. 142 yards against a 2-7 team? Patriots defense is better than average for a lowly ranked team, but 69 yard passing, 73 rushing? Gave up 9 sacks! The game started with the Patriots going three and down around the 35. Punt, Bears return it to around the 50 yard line. The Bears go no where. Punt the ball, bad bounce for Bears and the Pats get the ball back around the 35 yards. Except the good punt return, that'd be pretty symbolic of the Bears game.

Meanwhile, The Eagles appear to have regained their mojo.

The Chiefs win again with smoke and mirrors. The Lions win despite Goff throwing five interceptions. The Cowboys sink further into oblivion (so fun to watch).Jets fans continue to Just Endure (Enjoy?) The Suffering. The Ravens offense slumbered for 35 minutes, then resumed their position as the league’s irresistible force. The Washingtons handed the game to the Steelers. And the NFL somehow got a bunch of Germans to pay to see the Giants play the Panthers.

Just your average week.

I think Goff sank his candidacy Sunday night. Once he got to 5, I started rooting for him to break the NFL interception record (8). The Lions record is 7. With 5 in the first 37 minutes, he was on pace to tie the all-time mark.

Patriots looked decent. Maye was throwing better, but in the end, tossed an INT that ended the game during a potential end of game winning drive. Maye is improving, but he keeps taking a hits that are likely going to be problematic for an extended length career. Maye actually did better than the stats suggested as he had a number of drops by the receivers. However, he does need to be more consistent on placement. He had a few passes that required the receiver to hold up.

Don't get too excited, they were only playing the Rams, who thank the Patriots for the free space on their schedule. 🙃

The Jets doing about as well as people should have expected and people being surprised is enough to keep me happy. Well that and Super LI (and all the others... but especially LI). :)

Patriots have a ways to go, for certain.

This is quite the box score, like out of the 1950s.

I picked the Lions against the spread last week and stupid Goff threw five interceptions. Then he posts a perfect passer rating.
