Victor Orban led an authoritarian regime in Hungary where all media was controlled by the state. What I don't understand is that if he already has managed to take over the media as he'd done, what prevented him from just killing the democratic process?

Does anyone know?

From the reporting I’ve read, voters were sufficiently fed up with the omnipresent corruption, deteriorating public services, slow economic growth and the withheld EU funds situations. I think the EU membership’s threat of more sanctions prevented Orban from more obvious authoritarian moves.

One of his major problems was that Hungary standing alone against the power of "Brussels" and "Kyiv" was much more motivating as a hypothetical future action, than it was as a lived reality once the checks actually stopped coming. Hungary is hurting economically and most Hungarians are feeling the pain. The other was Péter Magyar and other fellow defectors from his regime, who understand the workings of the "Orban System" and were able to simply take over its cogs once the public sentiment shifted. Magyar is the opposition to Orban, not the opposite of Orban. It is in his interest right now to signal acceptability to the EU, but make no mistake, he will be ruling Hungary in a fashion very similar to the Orban regime. Note that one of his first acts was to effectively place the national media of Hungary under his direct control and influence. Finally, you've got a very well run in-person and social media campaign from Tisza, which Orban could not adequately suppress without showing his autocratic hand too strongly for a Eueopean leader to do without consequence.

There's a good article in the Guardian about the situation: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/apr/21/viktor-orban-hungary-lessons
Though it focuses on comparisons to the rather superficially similar situation in the US, I think its general observations about the weak points of Orban's regime are on the mark.

Perhaps he wasn't quite the orc that he was made out to be?
Time for a change is always a powerful force in elections.

Compared to Ursula "we've got tools" fond of Lying he is pretty opposite to authoritarian.
By the way, the new guy said he was not fond of sending money to Kiev and is absolutely not going to bend to Brussels on immigration.

He did kill free media. That's pretty orcish

Every condemnation from a Putin-spouting propagandist makes the new PM seem much better.

Orban also flagrantly expoloited EU funds building bridges to nowhere. Orbans cronies got the contracts and pocketted the money. In true kleptocratic fashion.

He was absolutely an orc. He wouldn't have let go of power unless he had to

Who knew there was so much anti-orc prejudice here? When was an orc ever an authoritarian ruler? Orcs were just arrow and axe fodder forced to serve human and demonic warlords exploiting the workers and hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma.
