Special Counsel investigation of Trump part 2

Donald Trump’s lawyer tasked with searching for classified documents at Mar-a-Lago after the justice department issued a subpoena told associates that he was waved off from searching the former president’s office, where the FBI later found the most sensitive materials anywhere on the property.

The lawyer, Evan Corcoran, recounted that several Trump aides had told him to search the storage room because that was where all the materials that had been brought from the White House at the end of Trump’s presidency ended up being deposited.

Corcoran found 38 classified documents in the storage room. He then asked whether he should search anywhere else, like Trump’s office, but was steered away, he told associates. Corcoran never searched the office and told prosecutors the 38 papers were the extent of the material at Mar-a-Lago.

The assertion that there were no classified documents elsewhere at the property proved to be wrong when the FBI seized 101 classified documents months afterwards, including from the office, which was found to be where the most highly classified documents had been located.

Corcoran’s previously unreported account, as relayed to the Guardian by two people familiar with the matter, suggests he was materially misled as the special counsel Jack Smith examines whether his incomplete search was actually a ploy by Trump to retain classified documents.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/26/trump-classified-documents-workers-moved-boxes

Sounds like a major deriliction of duty on the part of the lawyer.

Reactions: jab
I would put the odds at 80/20 that he will be charged.
I would put it closer to 98%.
Unfortunately, nobody really suffers from being charged (unless we’re talking about electric chairs). And I put the chance of Trump being incarcerated at maybe 30%, and if we’re talking about the years that he deserves, I have almost zero faith he’ll ever see that kind of time.
I predict house arrest in NY, not FL. He will ask to stay in his resort and the judge will deny that venue and offer him a day-spa of a prison, or his apartment in NY.

Trump captured on tape talking about classified document he kept after leaving the White House - CNN

Federal prosecutors have obtained an audio recording of a summer 2021 meeting in which former President Donald Trump acknowledges he held onto a classified Pentagon document about a potential attack on Iran, multiple sources told CNN, undercutting his argument that he declassified everything.

The recording indicates Trump understood he retained classified material after leaving the White House, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation. On the recording, Trump’s comments suggest he would like to share the information but he’s aware of limitations on his ability post-presidency to declassify records, two of the sources said.

CNN has not listened to the recording, but multiple sources described it. One source said the relevant portion on the Iran document is about two minutes long, and another source said the discussion is a small part of a much longer meeting.

Special counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the Justice Department investigation into Trump, has focused on the meeting as part of the criminal investigation into Trump’s handling of national security secrets. Sources describe the recording as an “important” piece of evidence in a possible case against Trump, who has repeatedly asserted he could retain presidential records and “automatically” declassify documents.

Prosecutors have asked witnesses about the recording and the document before a federal grand jury. The episode has generated enough interest for investigators to have questioned Gen. Mark Milley, one of the highest-ranking Trump-era national security officials, about the incident.

I think the documents case is the one that will get him. Anything else is just gravy.

Get him? Get him what? A month holed up in Mag a Lardo? I can’t imagine him being sent to an actual prison - EVER.
If it disqualifies him from holding office, that would help a little.

I smell gunsmoke.

He will be in court for the rest of his life, either for indictments or appeals. It will likely be up to the judges if he spends the time between hearings in prison. I do wonder, once he starts getting convictions, what will happen with his lawyers? He tends to not pay them, especially if they loose. Will they stay working for him, or will he have to find even more questionable people to handle his cases? People who find Saul too straight laced for their taste.

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump have informed the Justice Department that they have been unable to locate a classified document related to Iran sought by investigators that was discussed during a recorded meeting, two people with knowledge of the case confirmed to CBS News.

The classified document in question came to the Justice Department's attention through an audio file it obtained in the course of special counsel Jack Smith's probe into the former president's retention of sensitive records and alleged obstruction of the investigation. The audio, recorded by a Trump aide, includes remarks Trump made to two ghostwriters for his last White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, related to Iran and how to confront it militarily, the people said, requesting anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

One person said it was not clear if the document exists, or if Trump was misidentifying something to the group assembled during the recording. They added that the tape is in the possession of prosecutors.

And he probably thinks he won by keeping the government from seizing it.

One person said it was not clear if the document exists,
If Trump says he has it then most likely it doesn’t exist.

Kind of like all that great stuff his investigators found in Hawaii about Obama’s birth certificate. I’m still waiting for him to show it. Or his healthcare plan that will replace Obamacare.

Exclusive: Mar-a-Lago pool flood raises suspicions among prosecutors in Trump classified documents case

WashingtonCNN —
An employee at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence drained the resort’s swimming pool last October and ended up flooding a room where computer servers containing surveillance video logs were kept, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

While it’s unclear if the room was intentionally flooded or if it happened by mistake, the incident occurred amid a series of events that federal prosecutors found suspicious.

At least one witness has been asked by prosecutors about the flooded server room as part of the federal investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents, according to one of the sources.

The incident, which has not been previously reported, came roughly two months after the FBI retrieved hundreds of classified documents from the Florida residence and as prosecutors obtained surveillance footage to track how White House records were moved around the resort. Prosecutors have been examining any effort to obstruct the Justice Department’s investigation after Trump received a subpoena in May 2022 for classified documents.

Mark Meadows testified to federal grand jury in special counsel probe of Trump | CNN Politics.

Mark Meadows, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, has testified to a federal grand jury as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s ongoing investigation into the former president, according to one source familiar with the matter.

It is not clear whether Meadows testified as part of the special counsel’s investigation into Trump’s potential mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House or his probe into efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Jack Smith has emerged from his cave. If he saw his shadow, indictments will take another 6 weeks.

Flipping should be illegal!

Wait... Meadows is pleading to charges, "several" charges? Regarding obstruction or something different and much more interesting?

It's doubtful they would need Meadows on the docs case or that he even knows much about it. Though maybe he can help on declassification practices.

ETA: The Independent is the only source for a Meadows plea deal right now, so may not be solid.
