I’m skeptical. Seems to me that Albert Pierrepoint is the only competent executioner. Quick and easy. His tables could easily be done. If we’re going to kill these folks, just follow his method. Executions were set for 8:00 a.m. By 8:01, you were at the pearly gates.

Yep. IIRC, all you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior on your death bed (or chair) and you can walk through those pearly gates.

Not to mention that Jesus himself was executed.

I did say “probably”.

And who are we to say He didn’t deserve it?

Yeah, good point. I wonder if the Democratic ("Big Tent") Party and the Republican Party have highly variable postions on things? I'll get back to you later after I do a deep dive on this excellent observation.

Not so sure. I just read that in the 90's, support for CP was about at 80% and it's now down to a mere 52%. Perhaps in another 30 years it will be down to a mere 20% and politicians will take notice.

The Court ruled in the 40's that you could be subject to a second execution if the first didn't work. Happened to a guy who was electrocuted and it didn't work. He was in the chair in pain begging them to turn it off. They did when they realized it wasn't working. Then the NAACP got involved in the case and took it all the way to the supreme court which ruled 5-4 it wasn't inhumane to do it to him twice. The second time it worked flawlessly.

Exactly. And even more: I absolutely recognize that for certain people who committed certain crimes, I would gladly pull that lever over and over and over until my arm fell off.

As to the actual thread topic, if she has major brain damage, impending organ failure or needs hospice, just give her her freedom at that point. Her life is gone and she is not a danger to society under those or similar scenarios. She committed a murder when she was 18, some 32 years ago. What point is there to punish her more than taking the functionality from her life after 30+ years of prison?

I was about to go on about how fucked up the American justice system is (yeah, it is), when I learned of this guy in Japan who has the record for being on death row the longest (1968 through 2014). He was acquitted in 2024.

The inmate, Christa Pike, is “alive right now” after surviving an attempt to execute her by lethal injection, her lawyer said. He called on Gov. Bill Lee to reduce her sentence to life in prison.

This is a major fuck up of an execution. Utterly botched. She survived two doses of Pentobarbital, probably because the IV team couldn’t find a vein and the drugs just went into her tissue. This is a first. Other executions have been botched but they0 never got this far. Enough was absorbed to make it painful and she passed out, but not enough to kill her. So she’s rushed to a hospital where doctors are still trying to save her. The gov has suspended all further executions pending a thorough review. But he has said nothing about sparing her a second time. They might try again soon enough.

On an aside, I note that her spiritual advisor was Buddhist. I wonder if she had professed Jesus the governor would have pardoned her.
