Wasn't sure if this would be better in Religion, as all bathroom bills are based on xtian garbage...

One of the main arguments behind so-called “bathroom bills” — which restrict a transgender person’s public bathroom usage to the gender on their birth certificate rather than whatever aligns with their identity — just took a major beating.

Researchers at the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute, a think tank focused on gender identity, released a study Wednesday showing there's no statistically significant evidence behind the charge that transgender bathroom access and bathroom-related crimes are related.

Because Massachusetts passed an anti-discrimination law that some say threatens public safety — and are now trying to overturn in a ballot initiative — the researchers zeroed in on restroom crime reports in the state before the anti-discrimination provision was adopted.

The researchers found no increase in crime and no difference between cities with and without the restrictive bathroom policies in the first-of-its-kind study. That’s a blow to activists who argue trans rights risk safety to women and children in the restroom,.

Of course, we all knew already that these "bathroom bills" were never about protecting the public in the first place. It's just more "small government" conservative bigotry.

Maybe in adutlt public bathrooms.

Does anyone want young girls to be exposed to a penis in a restroom before they are old enough to make sense of it?

How exactly would that work? Are there a lot of stand up urinals in women's rest rooms? Asking for a friend.

You know, i camnot remember the last time i saw a penis in a men's room, besides my own. Probably have to be when potty training my kids twenty years ago...

Is seeing othee people's genitals a big issue where you go?

Yeah, of course there's no increase in "crime" because a having your privacy invaded
or feeling extremely uncomfortable at the (apparent) sight of a pre-op man in the women's change room at the public swimming pool isn't technically a crime.

Interesting that in another context (MeToo) the lack of official reporting isn't held up as some gotcha - move along, nothing to see here. Apparently "inappropriate" behaviour deserves lynch mob response for some victims but not others.

I don't get it. It's not like I walk around the restroom swinging my dick around. I'm not trans, so maybe my lived experience differs, but I'm not under the impression that they think flashing people in the bathroom is a good thing.

The only negative of laws regarding trans usage has been the behavior of some cis. Apparently older buildings are adopting a "use whatever bathroom" policy, but newer building are adopting an "it is easier to just build one bathroom and call it unisex" policy. Putting everyone in one bathroom. Or one locker room. This is making people even more uncomfortable than the trans issue.

Even then, if I were in one of those restrooms, I wouldn't walk around swinging my dick. What the hell people?

I always wash my penis in the sink after peeing. I’m assuming most trans people do the same and women would have to see that.

Everything but the issue.

You have friends over. If your 7 or 8 year old girl was taking a shower would you be comfortable with 30+ n adult make going in and taking a leak?

Simple yes or no answer.

I wouldn't be comfortable with ANYONE being alone in the bathroom in my home with young children, regardless of gender or age of the interloper, nor alone together in any other room of my house, nor in any public restroom, especially if they are showering. But even so, my children will know as much about sex as they are capable of understanding as soon as they are capable of understanding it. I won't care if they see penises or vaginas, of the old or the young... so long as I or my husband are there to prevent untoward acts. You act like sheltering people from the weirdness of sex is a good thing, to be lauded, but that is ridiculous. Sex Ed early. Sex Ed often.

That's a ridiculous question about a scenario that shouldn't ever happen.

It is a good question. It cuts directly to a core part of the issue people have with this. Would you be more comfortable if it was an adult female? If your answer is yes or if you think yes is a reasonable answer, then we've got something to analyze here.

The other issue with this study is what Lion IRC raised. If something isn't a crime, but is still offensive or disturbing, this study doesn't cover it. So trans women (or men pretending to be that) leering at women in the women's washroom/changeroom isn't covered, nor likely is them flashing people. They can probably get away with claiming they are in the bathroom so they are going to expose some flesh. Remember all that hubub over the "male gaze"? This doesn't cover that sort of thing.

The question is, do we care if such exposure offends people. I don't. I say get over it. But then, I'm somewhat of a nudist. I think the solution is to get rid of gendered bathrooms/change rooms and wait for society to adjust their prude/decency metre.

It dodges the issue entirely.

The bills were about bathrooms in schools and other public places, not private homes. Most bathrooms have lockable doors in homes, and cubicles in shared bathrooms likewise.

No it doesn't dodge the issue entirely.

You do raise a good distinction point, and rather than telling steve its a ridiculous question, you could have skipped to making that distinction. You are right that there is less security concern if there are lockable doors in cubicles, and especially if those are fully enclosed and can't be looked into or jumped over or reached under (rare). But what of change rooms and showers? I frequent a number of places where those are gender all inclusive as well.

This reminds me of a scene in a movie called the negotiator.

One guy says, "in the navy, they teach us to wash our hands."

The other guy says, "in the Marines, they teach us not to piss on ours."
