The FIFA Football World Cup 2018

If you want to cheer for the underdogs, Australia are a good choice. We have France, Denmark and Peru in our group, so it seems unlikely that we will feature in the round of 16. Our entire strategy appears to depend upon the almost geriatric (in footballing terms) Tim Cahill, who can still poach goals with real flair from set pieces, but who the younger players can run rings around in general play.

Our real problem is that football is a distant third or fourth choice for athletically gifted young Aussies, behind Rugby League, Australian Rules, and (probably) Rugby Union. It's a game played by Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters, as the late, great, Johnny Warren (a man I am proud to say I once bought a beer for) noted.

Those few Australians who care about Association Football and have the talent to play at the top level, end up spread across the planet, and as such don't really have a unified and shared style of play, making our national team not so much a team as a gathering of talented individuals.

Australian sports fans are a fickle bunch; They mostly won't even notice that the World Cup is happening unless we do well. And then they won't understand why we didn't win.

Going from my experience many, many, actually too many moons ago when I was going to high school, as it was called then. I along with many school mates of all persuasion wanted to play soccer. But all the school soccer teams well overfilled with applications. Not so Aussie Rules. So fo many of us, the choice was either play Aussie Rules or rugby. We couldn't get onto any of the soccer teams. I'm told that's still the case today, at least here in the West.

Just what the tournament needed, from the neutral spectators point of view. 5 goals in a fast-paced opening game in front of a noisy capacity crowd in Moscow and a big win (5-0) for the host nation, Russia, who are clearly much better than their world ranking suggests. Yes, Saudi Arabia were a bit toothless in attack and dodgy in defence, but all 5 goals were very good and the Russians looked impressive throughout.

Highlights here, for those who can access BBC TV:

The results of this game were never in doubt after Russia scored their fist goal in the first, less than ten minutes of the match.

Saudi Arabia appeared to play above their skill, at least from what I saw. Russia defeating Saudi Arabia isn't exactly a surprise. Russia's world ranking is due to their 7 losses in a row. They are much better than 70, but they certainly won't be a force to reckon with, unless they completely pump up due to the home field. They'll likely have to play Spain or Portugal in the knockout round. Spain is an odd asterisk, but I wouldn't hold the 5-0 result with too much weight.

Ronaldo, diving, cheating ball sack. Always has been. And what is up with his Adam's apple?

Any footie fans out there?

Ok, first up, obviously, Southgate should have picked both Andy Carroll (instead of Welbeck) and Joe Hart (instead of Pope), for different reasons, super-sub emergency goal-getting capacities and off-pitch experience provision respectively (because neither Hart nor Pope would get on the pitch during a game in any case).

But, churlishness aside, I think it's an interesting selection.

Oh, I'm talking about the England team as if it was the only team in the tournament. Whoops.

There are other players on other teams to watch out for. For example, Lanzini (Argentina), Hernandez (Mexico), Kouyate (Senegal) and Joao Mario (Portugal), to name but a few.

I'm listening to BBC Radio 4 right now and all they're talking about seem to be "cricket", England v. Australia (we're also playing our first game in this Football World Cup against Australia, and it seems we just about beat them - Oops, sorry, bilby! You'll try again with the other teams!).

Anyway, it's only the England team we're talking about here. Nothing to do with you as I understand...

Isn't Qatar the most recent winner of the world cup bribery game?

Yup.

FIFA makes the IOC look like paragons of probity and moral behaviour.

Come on, lads, this is depressing talk for Ruby. Focus on the camaraderie and the fair play and the technique and the sportsmanship, or even the sheer unadulterated manliness in display! They play with only one ball, for Chrissake!

Portugal vs Spain : A Ronaldo show and a bad Spanish goalie

Argentina vs Iceland : Impressed by the Icelandic goalie and defense like a wall.

You only won because the ref was blind as a bat - that was never a penalty, it was a perfectly fair tackle.

;)

I watched the game between France and Australia in the sports bar of Crown Casino, and even French supporters were surprised when their team received that penalty kick. The game should have been a draw!

You must be sadly mistaken here somehow. I guess I have to assume you're confusing football with either cricket or baseball. Which would be typical, I guess.

In football, we don't use a bat. :p

I didn't watch it so I will remain blissfully unaware of anything to do with the French side not deserving their win.

When it's your turn to win, there's no "should have". :p

You don't have any French supporters in Australia. You only have lost souls. :sadyes:

Ah. Souls.

Mexico beat Germany.

Whenever Mexico plays America, Mexico is The Enemy. The Hated Enemy. Any other time, I cheer for Mexico in international play.

So Viva Mexico! Viva CONCACAF!

Don't have time to watch many games. Saw Argentina v Iceland and looked at the DVR... Germany v Mexico, Costa Rica v Serbia. Should have watched the Germany one.

Iceland drew for the same reason Serbia won, height! That and for some reason, Argentina can't score often with Messi, di Maria, AND Augreo.

Enjoyed the truly lost looks on the German players after Mexico showed them how the game is played. :)

And a great job by the referee!

I predict England will underperform as usual and the tabloids will react hysterically as usual :p

I have soft spot for Iceland though. I like an underdog

I predict an England win today. It's not exactly going out on a limb. England are ranked 12th in the world, Tunisia 21st.

That said, it's by no means a foregone conclusion.

England should, by ranking, get to the second round. Anything after that should, objectively, be seen as a bonus.

The Serbia v Costa Rica game was rough, that ref let just about everything go. Early on in a corner, a Costa Rica defender pretty much tackled the Serbia player, a bit off of the ball, and nothing. I'd say Costa Rica probably benefited the most from the no calls as they were smaller and trying to make up for the size difference.

I will say, though the ref did seem to fall for a few times Serbia threw themselves at the ball (literally) and called fouls. Serbia really wanted that game bad.

Of all things, Mexico might be the worst of everything right now, with the Brazil draw. It'd be something for Mexico to win their group and play Brazil in the first round of the knockout phase.
