The FIFA Football World Cup 2018

I watched the game between France and Australia in the sports bar of Crown Casino, and even French supporters were surprised when their team received that penalty kick. The game should have been a draw!

I didn't watch it so I will remain blissfully unaware of anything to do with the French side not deserving their win.

When it's your turn to win, there's no "should have". :p

You don't have any French supporters in Australia. You only have lost souls. :sadyes:

Ah. Souls.

Nothing you would know about I'm sure, no need to worry overmuch about those.

The Serbia v Costa Rica game was rough, that ref let just about everything go.

With two hardball teams, I would as a referee let them degrade each other's manpower all they want, just to teach them a lesson and hopefully spare the other teams. :D

Seems Mexico beating Germany was a big deal. The gardener never showed up this weekend.

I predict an England win today. It's not exactly going out on a limb. England are ranked 12th in the world, Tunisia 21st.

That said, it's by no means a foregone conclusion.

England should, by ranking, get to the second round. Anything after that should, objectively, be seen as a bonus.

Hope you didn't make a bet on that.....

During World Cup time, we listen to British announcers on the American broadcasts (because American announcers sound like morons ["Uh, he's kicking the ball! I think. Wait. What?"]).

Every once in a blue moon that results in something odd, such as this one guy who pronounces "Tunisia" as "Tuna-zia." How common is that pronunciation among Brits?

So I'm cheering for Tuna Zia. It's not like there's ever a point in cheering for England in the World Cup. ;) :D

I understand there are quite a few Tunisian footballers who play in foreign clubs. The coach sort of beefed up the national team with those. And England can't rely on all those many English clubs' non-English footballers who can only play for their respective countries. So, depleted ranks somewhat. Not all countries are affected by this and of those that are, not all are similarly affected. This sort of distort the competition. Just one of the things that does.

What strikes me, though I'm no football myself, is that the usual big teams seem to be experiencing a period of low stamina while their contenders play somewhat above their status. One of the best players at the moment, Mohammed Salah, is Egyptian. The times, they are changing.

Come gather around this pitch
Wherever you prowl
And admit that the supporters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be feted like a god.
If your time to you
Is worth saving
Then you better start running
Or you'll sink into oblivion
For the times they are changing.

EDIT
84th minutes: Tunisia 1 - England 1.
By Georges! For King and country!

Portugal vs Spain : A Ronaldo show and a bad Spanish goalie

Argentina vs Iceland : Impressed by the Icelandic goalie and defense like a wall.
Iceland drew for the same reason Serbia won, height! That and for some reason, Argentina can't score often with Messi, di Maria, AND Augreo.

The problem with Messi is that they frustrated the shit out of him because they didn't let him play and do his thing. The penalty was very easy to block.
The Icelandic defense was a WALL, not just in height but very well positioned. They moved as one.

Messi vs Ronaldo penalty stats

Lionel Messi
Scored: 79
Missed: 24
Total: 79/103 (76.69 per cent)

Cristiano Ronaldo
Scored: 88
Missed: 18
Total: 88/106 (82.72 per cent)

A German gardener? A sort of inconstant German gardener?

I did manage to watch some of the England v Tunisia game and it wasn't pretty. Tunisia are basically a team of cloggers. But I was surprised at how poor England were. Maybe Tunisia were good at intimidating them but so many stray passes and the defense looks very shaky indeed. England did show a few glimmers of promise but I didn't see anything to suggest they will do well against a top team. They will go on to the next round, they always do. And with Harry Kane capable of scoring important goals, they may well nick a spot into the round after that.

Wow. Lampard is level with Ronaldo, 60 of 70. This does show you how much of a divefest La Liga is.

Senegal wins against Poland 2-1 to be the first African country I think to make a win in this tournament. Seems the times they are changing indeed.

Is there a decent source for the largely uninvolved to see the results?

A graphic of the playoff development?

We played pretty well to get a 1-1 draw with Denmark last night; But that result leaves our fate in the hands of others. We must beat Peru to have any hope of getting to the knockout stage, but more worryingly, we also need France to beat Denmark - and as both of those teams will qualify if their match ends in a draw, and France will win the group with either a win or a draw, they have little incentive to play for a win. I expect a tedious and conservative goalless draw, with neither Denmark nor France wanting to risk injuries or yellow cards in a match neither particularly needs to win.

Still, it's a funny old game, and if France were to score a goal despite their expected apathy, that could make things interesting. The Danes could come unstuck, if they play for (and get) a draw, but we somehow beat Peru by 2 goals or more. But that works against us - if Denmark win, France still qualifies, and we are out regardless of our result against Peru. So the Danes have an incentive to win, and France has no huge incentive to stop them. Indeed, with the odd situation in Group D, the winner of our group will most likely face Argentina or Iceland (5th and 22nd in the FIFA rankings) in the next round, while the second placed team gets Croatia (ranked 20th). So in some ways, the French have an incentive to lose. A Denmark win ensures their qualification, and a France loss means not facing Argentina, (although the Argentine performance so far in Russia has not lived up to their ranking or their history, so perhaps that's not such a fearful prospect).
