Thousands of Haitian migrants deported from US

Surprised that Biden admin is doing this. Good.

Deportation is a legal process.

These people who are fleeing a nation turned to shit because of US foreign policy for decades were just thrown out with force.

Sent back to a nation with no legitimate government or leaders or jobs or food.

Woah there, unter. You’re not suggesting Haiti is a shithole country, are you?

Turned into a shithole by US power.

US racism had a lot to do with it.

You might be surprised to learn that Haiti has a billionaire.

This guy.

Of course, he is the descendant of Syrian Jewish immigrants. Which might suggest something about human capital. But, whatever.

One billionaire living as a parasite off millions is not an argument.

But how can he do that? Didn't you imply that there is no money in Haiti?

One parasite has taken most of it for himself.

I am talking about millions of Haitians.

I thought Biden was going to send them back?

Biden is wrong too?

What Biden is doing/planning may not be consistent with the law. And, I don't know if any of the refugees in question have actually applied for or have been given the opportunity to apply for asylum, which is a condition for the protection of the law to be triggered. Unlike defendants charged with crimes, asylum petitioners are not given free legal counsel by the government, and many may not be aware of their rights in this matter.
The asylum process is intended to provided a safe refuge to people who may be in danger in their place of origin. Sending these people back to their place of origin would place them in harm's way, which is why it makes sense to grant them permission to stay in the US until their case can be settled. Why is this so difficult to understand?
You can not handle 13,000 cases that way.

That is not true. While the United States may lack the will to enforce its own immigration laws in an expedited manner, they don't lack the means to do so. You are confusing apathy with inability.

My respect for Biden just dropped a good bit.

Having been a supportive member of my local church's "Friends of Haiti" program for many years, I know more about Haiti than most Latin American countries. Between France and the USA, we've screwed those people so hard for so long we really do owe them something.
Rather like the rest of Central America.

But the bottom line remains. We owe Haitians a lot. If the cheese eating surrender monkeys won't help, we must do it ourselves. This is one of those parts of Christian morality I strongly subscribe to.

Anybody who thinks that countries like Haiti don't have billionaires are ill-informed concerning U.S. policy. Haiti has several.

The USA has forked money over to any corrupt despotic regime for decades, as long as they weren't Communist. The USA didn't care about what happened to the money or the people as long as McCarthy and HUAC and people like that got their way.

The Cold War was great times for ugly, undemocratic, tyrants. Because the U.S. didn't have any moral problems with tyranny, as long as it wasn't Communist rule.

Anyone who thinks there can be sprawling slums for miles but no billionaires sniffing at them from up a hill somewhere does not understand economics, period. Extreme poverty is not the natural state of human existence, it is always created by the concentration of wealth.

This is from Wikipedia:

Gilbert Bigio is a Haitian businessman. He is the founder of GB Group and Haiti's only billionaire.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_Bigio

Extreme poverty and extreme wealth in a tiny few go hand in hand.

I know better than to trust Wikipedia on every subject.

Duvalier and Co. have been hiding the wealth they got from the U.S. government and taxpayers for decades.
Tom

I didn't say I trusted Wikipedia but I did say where the information came from.

Duvalier is another reason for the extreme poverty in Haiti. You are right about that.

Extreme poverty doesn't require a concentration of wealth. It can simply be a royally fucked economy.

Fuck this bullshit.

This is a thread that was created with a hit and run youtube clip based on bad faith.

This is what really happens when you treat refugees like fucking human beings:

I remember picking up boat people twice in the late 80's when I was attached to the USS Sterett out of Subic Bay. Being forward deployed in the Philippines, we didn't go on long cruises but we were constantly in and out, patrolling about. I remember looking down into the helo hanger from the CIWS/Harpoon deck at all the people we rescued. They looked stunned.

I guess some equate the people from impoverished nations to the poor of wealthy ones. They don't understand (or don't care) the desperation of extreme poverty and will usually come back with a "we can't save everyone" type comment. Well, perhaps if we focused more on saving the world and less on chasing money, we could have at least ended abject poverty in the world. It takes so little (money or opportunity) to raise a person up. It just has to get into the right hands and it can change a person's life. I recall talking to a retired Filipino Mess Specialist who started his young life hiding from the Japanese in the mountains and ended his career as the lead Mess Specialist (Master Chief) for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was given a opportunity to join the US Navy to cook, clean, perhaps do laundry and took it.
Just a start is all that is asked.

I get that with no argument. Some of highest productive individuals in the US have been immigrants or first born to immigrants. The examples: Elon Musk, the Google founders, and even Steve Jobs.
It takes so little (money or opportunity) to raise a person up.
This is where I disagree with you respectfully. Because if it were so cheap, we would see more young people today get married and starting their own families. They aren't. The truth of it is living in America is expensive and is prohibitively expensive to raise a family. If you look at the stats people are getting married at much older ages today than back in the 1950's just because of this.
It just has to get into the right hands and it can change a person's life.
I would not disagree with this either.

Nor would I disagree with other posters to this thread who have correctly stated the US has been responsible for much of the poverty beyond our borders. But should today's generation be responsible for the bad actors of generations past? Like yet another reparations movement.... only this time for Central America? Would that really be fair? And if you think so, where does all that money come from?

If the US opens all its borders and takes responsibilities for everyone who ever wants to stand under a bridge, just where will it get the money to do so???? Yes, I get it would be nice not to ever have poverty. We all would want that, it is something we have wanted since biblical times. But how does a country that produces nothing (the US) having 100%+ to debt/ GDP ratio accomplish such a task? If the US was the manufacturing powerhouse (like China) I could see some possibility this might happen. But the reality is the US already has plenty of poverty, tent cities, and already no unskilled high pay jobs in this country! Many of us are not that much better off than they are. IMHO we have to have some kind of our own industry before we can hope to pay for opportunities for the rest of the world. Otherwise its not fair to the poor already living here.

This is another one of the many threads about bad stuff that might be mitigated by spending resources. In this case, the major spending would be on the countries whence these wannabe immigrants are coming. In the case of what's in Congress it's "infrastructure", which of course has become an increasingly broad and vague term.
Dems always want to spend and Republicans always want to keep them from spending.
Republicans only want to spend when they're in power, so they get all the credit - from the donors who get paid back thousands of times what they donated in tax breaks alone, and the constituents for whom they claim (often falsely) that they have lowered taxes.
Unless there's a miracle in '22 that puts Dems in full control without the existing DINOs support, we're going full 1984 autocrat, baby. I'm hoping there's a plan to expose and explode the GQP and that it might succeed well enough to produce such a miracle, but really... not optimistic.

Oh well, at least some Bubbas will be allowed to have fun in South Texas, picking off wetbacks.

Greed is the most common cause of fucked economies but consider the Khmer Rouge. The leadership fucked the whole economy in the quest for restoring the old ways.
