The Virus - Are You Affected?

So, read in quite a few places how COSTCO seems to be a lightning rod for the Covid deniers. Lots of stress for people dealing with angry customers, screaming in their face, on the phone, on the company's socisl media.
Looks like an opportunity for any military vets out of work right now. Maybe not the religious lay people, or anyone who dealt with the public a lot...
But i, for one, was called some pretty horrible things when i did WELL. They can forward those calls to my phone.
"Seriously? 'Fucker' seventeen times? That's all you got, you incontinent, pessary-eating, cockwomble? My kid swears worse when his juice box is lukewarm."

Or nerds. "Yes, yes. Let the hate flow thru you."

Oh make no mistake about it. There is tons of opportunity for work out there. This would be a great opportunity for a massive public spending project to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Indeed, a jobs program would be very reasonable right now. Unfortunately, the extremist, poisonous right-wing ideology that has dominated American politics for the last 40 years has made it a self fulfilling prophecy that the Government cannot solve problems. So realistically, I think we are fucked.

I mean, Jesus, the best they can come up with is a payroll tax cut, or more COBRA subsidies...

The majority of people who are still being hospitalized with the coronavirus across the state of New York are staying at home and are not essential workers, new data has revealed, prompting the questions of whether or not lockdown even works or for how much longer it will be necessary. In a study of some 1,000 new patients admitted to New York hospitals over the last week, 66 percent were staying at home and 18 percent had come from nursing homes, meaning they either became infected by going out to get groceries or other essential items, or from seeing people outside of work.

Of all the new hospitalizations, 73 percent were over the age of 51. The worst affected group were people aged 61 to 70 who accounted for 20 percent of the hospitalizations. Almost all of them - 96 percent - had underlying conditions. Most cases were in Manhattan, with 21 percent coming from there, but almost as many - 18 percent - were in Long Island.

Cuomo said that while it shows the number of new infections is being caused by 'personal behavior' and not the lockdown, the stay-at-home order had generally thwarted the virus enough that it still a good overarching plan.

The "lockdown" is a farce, mere theater similar to the security checks at airports.

You act as if "underlying conditions" are serious conditions.

30% of America has high blood pressure. That's the most common "underlying condition". Listen to the doc, take your medicine and it isn't going to shorten your life.

Going back to the OP, just got word today that there was a COVID death in my mother’s nursing home. So, that puts one on edge a bit.

You’re mother probably has < 50% chance of not catching it. Her chances would be better if the home had caught fire. How on earth are nursing homes still getting it ?

Look in the mirror. You're not just risking yourself, you're endangering everyone around. The workers in the nursing home have to eat.

Experts like the charlatan Neil Ferguson ? Experts are not infallible and should be held to account.

He's not a charlatan. He was just wrong. Even experts get it wrong sometimes. I'm not defending him. But you're implying that those who trusted him should have known better. I don't see it that way

Its a bad day to be fat. I have never understood USA and their obesity problem. Sure, they work long hours and eat out a lot. Restaurants like to put more salt and fat in food because its a cheap way to make it tastier. But why hasn't a healthy restaurant culture emerged? If they eat out so much there should be a market for it? It's the consumption market with the wealthiest consumers. They can pay for it.

I'd never let myself get fat, (or even out of shape). If my girlfriend got fat I'd take it as an insult and leave. Why would anyone put up with a fat partner when getting in shape is so simple?

Its a mystery to me

There is a huge market for healthy food.

The one thing you have to understand about the US is how deeply divided it is between the wealthy and the rest of society.

The wealthiest consumers aren't the fat ones, usually. Although, it definitely depends on the region. But metabolic syndrome is heavily skewed towards the poor and working class.

No he wasn't "just wrong" he was spectacularly wrong and has been many times before which is why he shouldn't have been trusted. His record is appalling.

Report: Texas Restaurant Chain Forbids Workers From Wearing Masks After Reopening

According to an anonymous tip sent to the Dallas Observer, people who work at restaurants run by the Hillstone Restaurant Group are being forbidden to wear masks while they interact with patrons.

“It’s true. We’re not allowing masks,” Emily, a manager of R + D Kitchen, told Preston Hollow People. “We stand by our decision…and we’re doing the best we know.”

A criticism of states that are already reopening during the pandemic has been that they’re only doing it so that they won’t have to pay out unemployment while businesses are under mandatory closures. Hillstone employees who feel uncomfortable with the no-mask policy will either have to suck it up, or no longer work — which could put their ability to collect unemployment at risk.

From a tweet:

From friend @Evan_P_Grant, Dallas Morning News: If you want to serve at these restaurants, you can’t wear a mask. If you refuse to wear a mask, you won’t get any more shifts. But they are not technically being fired, so they can’t collect unemployment.

I agree that being served by someone in a mask is unsettling... which is why I wouldn't go to a restaurant!

The scumbagery of some people is astounding.

Whatever conscience these people may once have had is now completely subsumed to right wing authoritarianism.

Governors Cut Off New Unemployment Benefits Before Some People Even Got Checks

But now, as governors lift restrictions on commerce even amid the mounting death toll, some people are losing eligibility for the benefits ― before receiving a single dime.

Tracy McFetridge is a massage therapist in Springdale, Arkansas, who stopped working in March after Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) ordered a halt to certain business activities.

As a contract worker, McFetridge, 38, would not normally have been eligible for unemployment, but the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Stability (CARES) Act broadened eligibility to include independent contractors. Many states have struggled to update their systems, however, and it wasn’t until last Friday that McFetridge was finally able to file a claim.

That same day, Hutchinson announced that more businesses could reopen ― including massage therapy. And state Secretary of Commerce Michael Preston said anyone claiming unemployment who refused to return to their job could get in trouble.

“That’s a fraudulent claim for us, and we will be tracking that,” Preston said at a news conference with the governor.

The menacing tone shocked McFetridge.

“At that point, I knew they wanted people off unemployment,” she said.

It's high blood pressure because of obesity. Without the obesity the high blood pressure would be a marginal problem.

Study Finds More COVID-19 Cases Among Viewers Of Fox News Host Who Downplayed Pandemic

To examine the relationship between viewership of Hannity and Tucker Carlson Tonight and their changes in behavior in response to the coronavirus — washing hands more often, practicing social distancing and cancelling travel plans — the authors surveyed 1,045 Fox News viewers aged 55 or older in early April 2020.

The paper says viewership of Hannity relative to Carlson is associated with approximately 30% more COVID-19 cases by March 14, and 21% more COVID-19 deaths by March 28.

Obviously stupidity spreads like a virus.
