As a reminder, Trump was outspent in 2016. He doesn't need the money as much. His brand name carries a lot of weight with his followers. And that'd actually help the GOP because they could move that money to Senate/House races.
That's what he said though no one should ever actually believe what he says. He has no credibility.
It's clear that taking taking free money from suckers is a large part of his ego.

In 2020 Trump spent 1.91 billion to Biden’s 1.68 billion. And raised 1.96 billion, so you have to figure that he pocketed most of the other $50m he raised. Today he is living the billionaire version of hand to mouth, robbing Peter to pay Paul at every turn and begging for money using threats of extinction…

Yes. But again, talking about 2016. You need to stop thinking about Trump conventionally. He defies all convention. His cult of personality carries weight money isn't needed to carry. So the question becomes is his base defiant enough to win primaries.
2016 wasn't the GOP endorsing Trump. Every GOP'er was trying to defeat Trump. And none of them could. And Trump supporters, if nothing else, are stubborn and hate the establishment. They very likely could end up hating DeSantis because they feel the establishment is throwing him over them, despite DeSantis really being nothing more than a politically competent Trump (he isn't competent in any other manner, but politically, DeSantis is quite something). And portions of the GOP even tried to stop Trump from getting the nomination at the convention. So it must be remembered that Trump managed to do with the GOP what Pat Buchanan did with the Green/Reform Party. With no one's help but pockets of the alt-right media. Again, not even they were all in on Trump. It took a while for Limbaugh to get on the bus, and forever for the formerly intellectual portion of the alt-right media.
So, Trump loves the grift. Getting money to give his own organization. But that is all he needs the money for. His name and image carries him. And if the MAGA base is still with him, he will be nearly impossible to beat in the primaries. The GOP would need to change the rules. Which they might ultimately do. But again, convention and Trump are oil and water. Trump defies it.
I'd also note that DeSantis could potentially be very over-rated as far as popularity. The Democrat Party in Florida is in ruins. With the GOP successfully brainwashing the Cubans Hispanics into thinking the Democrats are communists, they have won way too much of that demographic to be competitive. Cuban Hispanics are NOT a common demographic outside of Florida. And while Venezuelan immigrants might be of similar mind, there isn't enough of them either.
The GOP is done with Trump and want DeSantis or Halley, it'd be one heck of a ticket, though I don't think either would play second fiddle. Really Halley is the go to. But the GOP has enabled Trump way too much, and stoked his base way too much to be able to be reasonable in thinking they can just push him away.

Ron DeSantis will suffice for that purpose.
That's a feature, not a glitch. Has there ever been any governmental disaster wrought by Republicans for which they didn't effectively blame Democrats?
There are a lot of benefits to having a constituency that is collectively as dumb as a box of rocks.
He doesn't need to be President to continue the grift. In fact, better if he isn't since victimhood is part of the money-grubbing tactic.

What does Ron DeSantis have that every other candidate in 2016 didn't have? I mean, yes, he is more fascist, but there was a little of everything in 2016. Major league cunt in Ted Cruz, very popular purple state Governor and conservative in John Kasich, young up and comer Marco Rubio, and family dynasty Jeb Bush. Trump was an asshole who called people names and talked about his genitals.. and he was going to make America great again by forcing other people to do things. That is what won enough of the vote, just a plurality.
The point is the demographics in Florida don't match well with other battleground states. And the established competition in battleground states is going to be much tougher. The Democrats are never taking Wisconsin, Michigan, or Pennsylvania for granted again.

And we're off. National Review reporting DeSantis has yuge GOP primary lead... in Florida. The primary, which is like 1000 political years from now was polled on 11/11 and DeSantis has a 40+ pt lead on Trump.
As a reminder, John Kasich won the Ohio primary in 2016. But the right-wing mainstream groups are pushing DeSantis.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special prosecutor to oversee criminal matters related to former President Donald Trump, according to a senior Justice Department official.

The newly apointed special prosecuter is Jack Smith. A very well respected Justice Department officer. He will be tasked with two main special prosecutions. The Mar-a-Lago documents and the January 6 Insurrection. He has been promised to be given all the resources he needs for this effort. And is expected to act reasonably quickly. He will be given full access to DOJ work already done. MSNBC's legal experts agree this is a serious effort. Jack Smith is a consummate professional.

Note the extreme gerrymandering done in Florida by De Santis. He basically turned three blue districts into red through gerrymandering alone. The same was done in several other states too.
