What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Should I Marry A Murderer, 7/10; Streaming on Netflix this true crime documentary covers the case of the disappearance of cyclist Tony Parsons in a remote part of Scotland. Parsons had been doing a charity cycle in the Scottish highlands and just disappeared in 2017. For three years the case lay dormant. The case gets blown wide open when a young woman, Caroline Muirhead approaches Police Scotland about a horrifying confession her fiancé makes. Three episodes is a bit long but it is still a very interesting overview of the case from Caroline Muirhead's point of view.

Just watched a show called Severance, on Apple TV. It's an intriguing show about employees at a mysterious, hyper-secretive company who volunteer to have all their memories of any and all work experience wiped when they arrive at and again when they leave work, every day. This winds up in the "severed" employees developing two distinct personalities, living two different, wholly separate lives: The 'innie' and the 'outie'. The premise brings about all kinds of psychological and ethical questions.

There are currently two seasons, but a third is in the works and set to be released next year. I recommend it.

Finally watching "Breaking Bad", midway through season 3. What a masterpiece.

I’ve watched it twice, it’s so good. There is an episode in season three called Fly, I recommend you skip it. Google it and you will see it’s a poorly received episode.
Given how good the series is, Fly is downright offensive to watch.
The introduction of Tuco on the other hand is one of the best.

I turn the TV on at night to help me sleep despite the tinnitus, and recently I found an online version of the PBS series "Nature" that doesn't have ads and appears to go back decades. Amazing stuff - based on what I've seen when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Literally a day late. I just watched it. I thought the symbolism was effective. Walter being drugged up and getting very close to telling Jesse about Jane’s death was also a cliffhanger moment.

Stargate SG1 does not hold up well. Its a bit hokey and the dialog is not very good.

Don't know how they kept a straight face.

The stoic Tilk and Carter who goes to other planets in combat wearing eye makeup.

I have no streaming services, only broadcast DTV. The scifi channel Comet broadcasts SG1 Monday-Friday.
A problem I've had with it is it seems to reuse the plot where the team gets imprisoned often, and they have to escape. It can be fun sometimes but it also can get old. There are some episodes I enjoyed though.
I didn't watch this very often the first few times round, but enjoyed most of what I saw. The first episode aired the other day so I thought I'd check out the origin story.

Nup.

I've tried like three times, and I just can't get into it. The acting is superb, the writing is fantastic... but the premise is something I just can't get behind. I just can't root for the bad guy.

Same thing happened with How to Get Away with Murder, as well as Suits, and to a lesser extent Dexter.

The first season of How to Get away with Murder was okay - but the initial murder was accidental. I still didn't agree with the cover-up, but I could deal with it. But by the time it got to the second season, it was just outright bad guy stuff. Same thing happened with Suits - I really enjoy the acting, but somewhere in the second season, the whole thing was just one episode of covering for fraud after another.

Dexter had a longer run for me, and I did actually finish the series. I was fine until the last couple of seasons, when Dexter started violating his own rules and impeding the investigations.

I don’t think it’s necessary to root for him. Watching him slowly change from a devoted family man/ high school teacher into a drug lord is fascinating. He avoids death mostly through blind luck, while causing all kinds of “collateral” damage.

I understand the premise... but I end up emotionally opposed, and I don't want to watch a show that I perceive to be venerating the criminal. Logically, I get that it's a really good show; emotionally it's a no-go for me. I've tried, it's just not happening.

There's no law to say you have to watch it, or like it.

I don't see it as veneration of a man who turns out to be particularly ruthless.

I see it like Macbeth. An exploration of a notionally good person's descent into evil via his choices.

If memory serves Dexter was a similar situation but his choices were warped via upbringing. ?

The revulsion you feel is also applicable to many characters in literature.

I don't feel like I have to watch it 🤷‍♀️ I was just explaining why it doesn't land for me, despite it being objectively good acting and writing.
