Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

I interpereted the guy sacrificing his son not to buy time, but because he had already figured that John Wick was going to kill him. So instead of wasting resources to save his dead-son-walking, he focused on revenge. A bit like how Angelina Jolie's character in Salt reacted to her husband being captured by the baddies.

I haven't seen this movie, but I have to fucking find out what kind of dog it was. Whatever the breed, I need one of those.

Again, really stupid. At this point he was out of henchmen, and out of money. And as for saving resources, he didn't even withdraw all the people he had guarding his son, which at the time amounted to half his strength. He couldn't beat Wick with an army of henchmen, so his plan was to kill Wick's friend, and then escape by helicopter. That's pretty pathetic. And then there's Dafoe himself. Double crossing his employer, and then forgetting that the man know's where he lives. The problem with this movie is that literally no one exercises any good judgement, except the chop shop guy, he's alright.

Ghostbusters (2016) - 5.5/10

I finally got around to watching the new Ghostbusters over the weekend. I caught it on one of the movie channels at like 1am when I couldn't sleep. Unfortunately it wasn't the cure for insomnia that I had heard it would be. It was mildly entertaining, but nothing special. At least it wasn't just a gender-swapped scene for scene rehash of the original movie. It did have a few funny moments, and I liked Kate McKinnon's role, but I dislike Melissa McCarthy so much that it likely took a star or two off of the rating for me. I think the only role I have enjoyed her in is her portrayal of Sean Spicer on SNL.
What about Spy and Gilmore Girls? Her characters in movies do tend to be a bit over the top.

I haven't seen Spy, and never watched Gilmore Girls either.

I do get that. I still think that around 70 murders is a little excessive a response for that.

I think John Wick's official body count in the first movie is 80+.

Also, the antagonist is still stupid no matter where the dog came from. If you sell out your son to obtain peace, you should then keep the peace. If one dude can sacrifice his son in a tactical move to buy time, then the other guy can say to himself "its just a dog."

Also the woman who breaks the rules of the murder hotel, and then is apparently surprised when she gets murdered.

It is an over the top action flick, the type you have to turn your brain off to enjoy. Seriously, you are supposed to be rooting for an amoral hit man as the protagonist, who thinks nothing of killing over 80 people because someone stole his car and killed his dog. The sequel is even more over the top and ridiculous, but at least they finally clue you into the fact that this is not taking place in anything like the real world, but rather an alternate reality where every other person alive is part of criminal syndicate, and at least half of those people are employed as assassins.

Beagle puppy.

an uncharacteristically quiet one at that.

Well, that's because you needed the audience to identify with and care about it. If it had just been yipping the whole time, then the reaction when Theon killed would be "Thank God! It's about fucking time" and Wick's motivations wouldn't have made any sense because nobody would understand why it was he was angry with these people.

You have successfully grasped and restated what I implied in my post.

Oh. Nevermind, I'm not killing more than 10 people over a dog like that. Turn it into a miniature schnauzer and well, I'd just introduce it to some mountain lions that have been roaming around here lately.

Keeping Up With The Joneses, 5/10; Stars John Hamm, Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Gal Gadot in a secret agent caper of daft proportions. It kicks off with a suave couple (Hamm and Gadot) moving into the house next door of Galifianakis and Fisher. The new couple are covert secret agents working for some government agency or other. The plot is pretty typical, you know, somebody on the inside selling top secret stuff to an evil organization. There are a few funny bits in it but not enough to recommend the movie. Seeing Fisher and Gadot in lingerie meant it wasn't a complete waste of time.

The Accountant, 5/10; Stars Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick and a few other familiar faces. The plot is straight forward, mysterious Ben Affleck with his Rainman type autism is a super accountant that can look at corporate accounts and spot when embezzlement is going on. Contracted to help a shady company, he unearths something dodgy going on and all the nefarious characters lurking in the background start bumping people off. Affleck is no ordinary, bespectacled, meek CPA, heck no, he is like a kick ass super ninja that can shoot stuff. But he is also being hunted by the government as suspect for some violence he did earlier. Some decent action scenes but pretty standard stuff.

The Visitor - 8/10
A very quiet and moving story about a widowed and repressed middle aged economics professor who takes in 2 illegal immigrants ( a Syrian musician and his wife) into his apartment, and how that act changes his life. Stars Richard Jenkins and directed by the same fellow who directed The Station Agent.

Allied, 6/10; Stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard in a WWII spy drama/psychological thriller. Pitt plays the part of a daring spy operating behind enemy lines and while on a mission in German occupied France is partnered up with the French beauty Cotillard. Mission is a success, Pitt goes on to marry Cotillard and start a family in London. However, 18 months in, it appears Cotillard may not be who she says she is and a game of cat and mouse ensues as Pitt desperately wants to believe his wife is who she says she is. Good performances from the cast but the movie lacks a bit of oomph.

Hell or High Water, 6/10; Stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as brothers, robbing banks to stave off foreclosure on the family ranch. Hot on their trail is a sheriff played by Jeff Bridges. He has a weird way of speaking in this movie which I didn't like. The plot is pretty simple, the movie is nicely filmed and the action is decent. Another movie that got rave reviews but I thought it was only so-so.

Colossal: 8/10 (as a drama, and as a film with a message that conveys that message in a powerful yet subtle and well written way) - like 5 or 6 purely on the basis of the film itself in relation to movies as a genre.

this is one of those movies where it's kind of complicated and difficult to explain why it's so good without sort of ruining why it's so good.
all the elements from the trailers are there - it in fact IS a kaiju film involving monsters appearing in south korea - but that's actually just the backdrop for a very affecting tale of an entirely other sort, which i won't spoil.

if you want to see a well written emotional drama presented in an extremely clever way (that does an amazing job of portraying its conceit equally as well as the secret emotional gut-punch) then go check it out, very well worth it.

The Visit

After a string of subpar to downright shitty movies, M. Night Shyamalan really hit it out of the park with this one. Creepy, tense, and suspenseful. I kept waiting for snark-worthy stuff, but it never came.

Anyway, two kids go to visit their grandparents, who they've never met before and things start to get weird. I can't seem to write anything about a movie without spoiling it, so I'll leave it at that. But this is a good movie. Not perfect, but pretty damn good.

8/10

I didn't realize that was a Shyamalan movie. Yes, that was definitely a very creepy film. I concur with your score.

The Discovery 5/10

Robert Redford gives a bad performance as a scientist who discovers the afterlife. What does the world do when it finds out he is right? Yep, they commit suicide. Totally logical.

Nothing about this movie is right. The twist ending is so easy to see you'll be aware of it before you even start the movie. It is a love story above all else, and not a very moving one.

With better direction and a few plot tweaks this could have been an awesome story but it turns out to be an insult to humanity and just plain silly. IMDB points out the biggest goof:

Character error

Will rules out the possibility of the image retrieved from a corpse being a memory of the deceased person, on the grounds that it does not match the events that took place in real life. Science has discovered, however, that memory is in fact not an accurate record of what one perceives but rather a distorted and malleable one, and Will, being a neurologist, must have been aware of this.

It is clear that nobody thought things out. Or the main character was lying to everyone else the whole time. Either way pretty stupid.

I just saw a YouTube video which was complaining about the lack of advertising for the new Wonder Woman video. The next video that auto loaded after that started out with the line "Check out the new Wonder Woman trailer in tonight's episode of Gotham".

It occurs to me that their premise may be wrong and they've been advertising the shit out of this movie and it's just that nobody's noticed.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2
7.5/10

If you like the first, you'll like this one. I laughed a bit more with this movie.
