Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Eye in the Sky.

That moral dilemma: The choice between certainly killing or maiming one innocent and the very probable loss of a much greater number of lives.

I thought it was well done.

Ant Man and The Wasp - So this film was 'panned for a Marvel film', in the sense that it wasn't terrible, but not great. For me, I walked into it expecting Ironman 2. But I felt like I had close to an Ant Man feel to it. The plot was compact and its scope was limited, which might affect future viewings, but I think the same formula that made Ant Man work made this film work. Enjoyed it a lot.

Heist, 7/10; Stars Robert De Nero and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. De Nero is the shady boss of a casino which is laundering money. Morgan is a dealer in the casino and needs $300,000 for his sick daughter. He asks De Nero for a loan, De Nero says no and Morgan joins a group of inept crooks that want to rob the casino. The heist goes ahead but it all goes wrong and the crooks end up taking hostages on a bus they hijack. It's a fairly formulaic heist caper but it does have a few interesting plot twists and some implausible stuff too but if you don't think about it too much it is quite an entertaining and enjoyable movie.

All I See is You

This began and progressed as a very atmospheric, very interesting, very visually appealing film. However, it struggled to keep my interest because the pacing was too slow. It was also uneven in that some of its suspenseful elements never really pay off. Also, some random things happen that don't work to move the plot forward. However, there's nothing about it that's really bad. It's a tiny bit of sci-fi, but mostly it's a dark examination of the erosion of a unique relationship. If I wasn't so lazy, this would be worth a re-watch because there are things going on beneath the surface that warrant a closer look.

I watched Seraphim Falls (2006) the other night with my parents. They thought the film was terrible. I actually thought it was very good. I think it was an excellent study on the futility of revenge. The film ends in a very positive manner, though it will disappoint anyone requiring more and more gunshots and murder.

At the cinema on Monday and watched

West Side Story: First ten minutes feels like the best movie ever, and the rest still feels good. 8/10.

The Predator: Good first half hour. Rest feels average. Critisms of homophobia and sexism pretty much go out the window though. 4.5/10

Teen Titans Goes to the movies: Excess fun 8/10.

Christopher Robin: Quiet joy. 9/10.

Fahrenheit 451

Somehow, of all the thousands of books I've ever read, this wasn't one of them. So what I hoped when I watched the movie was that I could just take it for what it was, rather than have my hopes dashed by too much deviation/not staying true to the source material.

Turns out I didn't have to worry about that.

The movie is just off. I don't know how else to describe it. What should be a film relevant to current times isn't. All the elements are there, but none of it really works. It should've been interesting and thought provoking, but it was uninteresting and the only thoughts provoked was whether I should watch something else. I ended up quitting on it about 4/5 of the way through after much distracting internal debate.

Which one did you watch? The original or the recent version by HBO?

The original was never very good. The HBO I can't comment on because I've only seen a short part of it.

Oh, sorry. :)

The new one on HBO.

One more complaint. In this version, the U.S. still has the internet and social media (???). Apparently there was a civil war of some kind, and the book burning side won. And since it wants to destroy all but the most basic literature, why didn't it get rid of the internet? It would've solved myriad problems and created a much more intriguing world.

I think there was supposed to be some incisive criticism about the modern day use of internet and social media, but it fell flat.

And a society that's supposed to be illiterate is one that's easier to control. So why not just get rid of all e-media?

Anyway, it was a lame attempt to update the original source material.

Man On The Moon, 4/10; Stars Jim Carey as Andy Kaufmann, a role perfectly suited for Carey. The movie is a biography of "performance artist" Andy Kaufman. The movie is quite interesting as it shows key events in the career of Kaufman. I vaguely remember Kaufman from the TV show Taxi and always thought the character Latka was just annoying. As "performance artists" go, Kaufman was true to his craft I suppose but I thought Kaufman was an annoying prick that performed pranks for his own amusement rather than to entertain.

Rifftrax: Fist of Fury

I think the secret to a good MST3K and/or Rifftrax episode is that the movie by itself would have to make you laugh, or at least be interesting to some degree. Since the demise of MST3K and the subsequent rise of Rifftrax, the crew seems to understand this. I love MST3K, but some of those movies are so awful that I couldn't make it through more than an hour or so.

The Fist of Fury riff is good because there's lots to laugh at even without the treatment, but it's also interesting because it's a Bruce Lee film, and his charisma coupled with hammy acting of epic proportions is on full display here. There's even some interesting insight into the longstanding hard feelings between China and Japan that while no secret, lends an worthwhile cultural aspect to the film.

Since the demise of MST3K

Just wanted to chime in here, as it seems you are unaware that MST3K is not dead. Season 11 was released last year on Netflix, and it was just announced today that season 12 will be released on Netflix this Thanksgiving. MST3K may have been gone for the better part of two decades, but it is back now, and going strong.

I had not seen that. Great news!!!

Incredible that there are Rifftrax and MST3k producing material at the same time!

I'm pondering heading to the theater for the Twilight anniversary showing while running the Rifftrax via their app.

I'm aware of it and watched every episode. I just found it so disappointing that I'd forgotten about it.

For example, Patton Oswalt is playing TV's Frank when he should be with Tom Servo and Crow riffing on the movie.

That said, I will watch every episode of the next season. I hate being such an easy trollop to a TV show.

For me, 8/10. Maybe I was just in the mood. A slow-paced little film with an emphasis on mood.

If you are not prepared to be sympathetic to the arguably comparatively trivial plight of a white, 'western' man having a midlife crisis, you might scoff at this film. Otherwise, or if you yourself, like me, are experiencing this particular 1st world problem, it might chime uncomfortably for you. Good performances all round. More poignant than comic (arguably not comedic in the slightest in fact). Not as dark as 'Greenberg'. Not as cringeworthy as 'While we're young'. Not as funny as 'Sideways'. Much more low budget than, 'American Beauty'. Less romantic than 'Lost in Translation'. Nothing entirely unpredictable. Recommended nonetheless, imo.

Ladies in Black

This had no plot worthy of the name, no explosions, no swearing, lovely imagery. I'm taking my 90yo aunt to this, she will love it because of all those things. (Not as banal as I'm making it sound, it examined a few of the issues for women in the 60s but so gently that you barely notice.)

Aspects of the lives of several women working for a Sydney high end department store in the early 60s. It made my day in the first 3 minutes by reproducing the image of Foy's Santa which some Melbournites will remember.
