Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

King Kong (2005).

I haven't seen this one in a good 10 years or so. Damn, it's such a great adventure movie; one of the best ever made in my oh-so weighty opinion.

I won't go through a synopsis because I'm sure everyone's seen it already, but if it's been a while, I'd recommend you go back and revisit it.

Oh, Jack Black. His shooting star hit its highpoint in this one. While very limited he was the perfect actor for this role.

And WTF ever happened to Adrien Brody? One minute he was the most wanted man in Hollywood due to his abilities as a dramatic actor, and the next he's starring in an Alien vs. Predator movie. Not that this movie was a hard hitting historical drama like The Pianist, but he filled his role really well as a true leading man in this one. I just looked and he's still working, but his star has descended. Maybe it's my fault for becoming lazy just like so many other people when it comes to searching out good movies, probably because streaming services feed me all the horror and sci-fi junk I can take in.

maybe he wasn’t good with his money or got screwed by an accountant and had to take any role that paid the bills?

Are we talking about the Adrien Brody who just won a Golden Globe award and a BAFTA award, and who’s up for an Academy Award?

Perhaps. But was he or was he not in alien v predator? I haven’t seen it.

Could be. It's what I've come to think of as the Nicolas Cage Syndrome.

I'll check it out, but I haven't heard of it, which is my fault. Like I said, I need to seek out better things to watch than what my inner 15 year old wants to indulge itself in.

Coming tomorrow: see my review of Murderous Rampage: All Limbs Left Behind.

I remember William H Macy saying something like this about why he was in Jurassic Park 3. Needed to pay the bills.

The movie was called Predators. No xenomorphs and it had a pretty all star cast. Lawrence Fishbourne, Walton Goggins, Alice Braga and Danny Trejo were also in the movie.

Oh yeah, that's correct.

And it still sucked.

I just watched The Wizard of Lies (2017), a biopic of Bernie Madoff (though Google calls it a "crime/thriller"). It gets 6.9 IMDBs, about right.

U.S. SEC does NOT impress with letting the Ponzi scheme operate for many years despite warnings and despite that exposing the fraud was just one simple phone-call away. Were the sons aware of the fraud? I dunno, but they must have been extremely stupid if unaware.

Iceman (2017)

This movie exemplifies Hobbes' idea that life is nasty, brutish, and short.

It's a highly fictional account of Otzi, the neolithic frozen man found in 1991. It's beautifully filmed, well acted, and the costume design is very well done. Just as importantly, it captures what life was like when no law or authority existed. It's beautifully filmed, well acted, but the writing is questionable.

I don't want to be too critical though because I don't really know what else they could've done with the story that wouldn't have been boring as hell. It's essentially a revenge thriller type of flick, with Otzi being the hero of the story. In reality he could've been a villain, a true outcast, or just some guy who made a bad decision and got caught in an unexpected snowstorm. However, none of those things have much of a chance to get funded or sell tickets as evidenced by the fact that it made abut $5,000 in the U.S. and Canada combined. Oof.

It's a worthy watch though, and really more of a historical project than an attempt to make money.

Dracula: Untold

If you've ever wished that Dracula was a superhero, but at the same time have always wanted to see Vlad the Impaler as the tender family man he surely was, then this a must see for you.

@gmbteach;
Does your Bilby have long pointy ears?
I got the DVD for "How to train your dragon 3, Hidden world".
One of the extras is a short cartoon titled "Bilby".
Set in the outback, the main character is rabbit like with long pointy ears.
No dialog, so I don't know if Bilby was it's name. I don't know outback critters, so I don't know if it was a rabbit.
And I don't know what your Bilby looks like, so I have to ask:
Was that him or just coincidence? :p

VHS

Ran across this one on Tubi. I had heard of its reputation amongst gore fans and it didn't seem to pull any punches in that regard.

The back story is a bunch of idiot college age guys go to abandoned buildings and vandalize them for fun. They go to one, find a dead guy in front of a bunch of TV screens and VCRs. They start going through the tapes and see some outlandish horror scenes that are supposedly real.

I think of the movie more as one of those anthology shows with differant stories of the same theme.

Not sure how to rate it. Some of the effects looked surprisingly real. I would say it was pretty effective at gore horror but the genre isn't really my thing. Curiosity and all.

VHS II was also available but one was enough for me.

The Wall (2012)

This one's about a German woman who gets walled off from the rest of the world by an invisible wall. She's locked into a place of great scenic beauty, where she learns to be self sufficient, e.g. hunting and planting crops. It's a very quiet and serene movie while at the same time being dark and tense. The juxtaposition of those elements makes for an interesting watch.

They could've cut a good 40 minutes off it though. There are long segments where we see the same thing over and over again, which dulls the impact of the film.

It also does a good job of allowing viewer interpretation. It could be seen as a feminist type of film, or a condemnation of modern technology, or even an analysis of the brutality of nature and life's fragility.

Or all three and even more.

It's a good watch for an early evening with a cup of coffee.

Keeping Rosy, 6/10; Streaming on Kanopy this British thriller/drama is about a successful single, middle aged female executive (Charlotte) who is passed over for promotion in favor of a less experienced male colleague. She leaves the office and returns to her apartment to find her cleaning lady smoking in her apartment. An argument ensues and then a physical confrontation where Charlotte accidentally kills the cleaning lady. This movie plot isn't original but it could have been executed much better. There were long spells of no dialogue that were a waste of time, the other characters were poorly developed and over the top. The plot twists could have been more dramatic and tense but fell a bit flat. The lead actor Maxine Peake was excellent.
