Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Little Bites

This movie starts out as genuinely unsettling and disturbing. A woman allows a demon to eat her a bite at a time in order to protect her daughter from the demon. The sound design is especially effective in aiding this portion of the movie.

The lead actress does a commendable job and she deserved better than how this flick turned out.

There's a gigantic hole in the Who, What, When, Where, Why elements that any movie, no matter the genre or quality should have. This one just skips it completely. It makes the viewer feel like the writers ran out of coffee one night and said, "Writing those parts is just too hard, so we'll pretend like we don't need to explain anything."

There's a strange cast of folks around this movie. Cher is the executive producer, Chaz Bono plays a somewhat minor role, the writer and direct who calls himself Spider One is the lead vocalist of Powerman 5000 and is also Rob Zombie's younger brother.

It could've been excellent, but it just takes massive crap about halfway through the second act. Oh, there are also some really cringey performances.

Weapons

This is a solid horror watch with a cast including Julia Garner and James Brolin. Both are excellent as are the rest of the cast.

The first 2/3 of the film are shot in a manner reminiscent of Pulp Fiction. Events weave in and out of each by telling the story from five different points of view. Then the movie comes out of its turnabout style and becomes linear.

Plot: 16 out of 17 children run away one night, all at the same time. Only one child is in class the next day, no one knows where the remaining kids are. Crazy things ensue.

There's lots of good stuff here, but like so many horror movies, we don't ultimately find out who the villain is, where it comes from, or why it's doing what it's doing.

I still recommend seeing it because it's a well made film full of tension, suspense, and creepiness.

Horror Scale: 7/10

Non-Horror Scale: 7/10 (yes, it's better than most films regardless of genre)

Bystanders, 6/10; Streaming on Amazon Prime this horror, slasher vengeance flick was decent but suffered from some weak writing and shaky acting. Three young women go to an informal party and are drugged and raped by the male hosts. When the girls wake up they are given the chance to escape but the boys hunt them down. One girl Abby, gets to a road and flags down a car which has a young couple in it. The premise is good but a lot of the dialogue is poorly written which dampens the tension.

Superman - Can Gunn save DC? Well, the early answer is... it is the best the DC universe has had since Dark Knight and the best Superman since Reeves. But the bar was so low.

It felt like multiple people wrote the film. It starts with a political aspiration of questioning the justifications of Superman's meddling in foreign affairs. It then devolves into nonsense. Also, Lex Luthor would be a much better villain if he won. But he always loses. Superman is the Hulk Hogan of super heroes. You can write-off the previous 1.75 hours of action and he'll hulk up and that is that. The threats and resolutions also made no sense. And don't get me started with an "anti-proton river". Also, in the beginning of the film, there is this guy in a suit that kicks his butt... and we never see that again. Could have been useful.

With Gunn at the helm, this was the first Superman film I was interested in seeing since Superman Returns, which ended up being a cure to insomnia. However, there really wasn't anything great about the film.

All That We Destroy

Synopsis: scientist mom's son is a serial killer. In order to try and cure him, she brings back people/person he's murdered before.

It's an interesting idea and the first three minutes of the film are intense and very well done. Sadly, the rest of the 27 minutes I endured were terrible. Minimally talented actors reciting expository lines written with the sophistication of a 4th grade play is the primary cause of this terminal velocity plunge into the celluloid sewer.

Swallow

Hapless young woman marries trust fund boy. She's treated horribly by everyone all the time. She gets pregnant and begins to eat household objects.

This one has something of a budget and is well shot. But gotdammit, don't double penetrate the viewer with ham-fisted social commentary. Nuanced writing, character arcs, etc. all matter. RICH MEN BAD, WOMAN OPPRESSED is just... ugh. All the pieces were there for a good movie, and maybe it turned out well, but hitting the 30 minute mark took serious effort.

You have the money, you have the actors, you have a good idea. So instead of hitting us over the head with a sledgehammer, just make a good movie!

I seem to remember seeing that. Apparently it didn't make much of an impression on me.
