Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Bring Her Back

Woman who lost her daughter in a drowning incident takes in two orphans. One of the orphans is brought in for Horror purposes.

This is a solid but not great horror flick. The problem with it is hard to define. The writing, acting, direction, cinematography, etc. is all there, but for some reason it just doesn't hit. Maybe it's because of tension isn't built well? Also, the film attempts to be dark and moody, but it's just kind of drab. OTOH, it certainly has some great SFX which made even me recoil, so it does an excellent job in the physical horror department.

Since it's Spooky Season, I'll give it a recommend because overall it's a solid horror flick, and it's better than taking a chance on any of the utter shite that so many horror movies foist on viewers.

6.5/10

And dammit, watch Strange Darlings. I watched it again last night and it's such a good movie.

Better Man, 5/10; A musical biopic of Robbie Williams, the fat dancer from 90s British boy band Take That. Hmm, a strange film to be made really and unsurprisingly a box office bomb. Robbie is portrayed through a CGI chimpanzee which is odd to begin with but you get used to it. I am surprised I even sat through the whole thing but it is watchable, kinda entertaining. It's an unremarkable story of a youth who finds fame at a young age and struggles to cope. The usual pop star antics, partying hard, substance abuse, shagging anything that moved (four of the five Spice Girls) and strained relationships with family, friends and bandmates. The music is okay, Williams has a decent catalog of toe-tapping hits that I had heard before. I bumped into Robbie Williams years ago and spoke to him for a few minutes. He was very nice and chatty.

Werewolves

This movie has brilliant comedic beats, timing, and characters. The problem is that it's not a comedy.

Synopsis: for some reason a super moon caused a billion people to become werewolves last year. This year they know it's going to happen again. How do they know this? Who tf cares?

Why did it happen in the first place? Uhhhh... scientific reasons.

This movie, if made by the creators of Airplane!, could've easily been a work of comedic genius. It lends itself very well to gags and absurd answers to statements and questions.

If you ever get together with friends to watch a so-bad-it's-good movie, this is a must see.

If not, then avoid it at all costs.

MST3K Potential: 8/10

For all other reasons: Fart Sounds

Death Knot

This one was filmed in Indonesia. The Amazon rating was 5/5. Foreign films always get a bump for not being fucking terrible. But because of the rating I gave this one a shot.

A lady in a village practices witchcraft of some sort and then hangs herself. Her son and daughter, along with daughter's boyfriend go to mom's house to make arrangements. The villagers don't like them because of mom's evil shenanigans.

For the next nearly two hours almost nothing happens. I thought it was going to be an Evil Dead inspired flick, but it's just dull.

Except for the painful expository dialogue, it's a technically competent movie that might've been more effective with an hour and twenty minute runtime.

Give it a miss

Where the robots grow 2024 4/10
Kids might like it. Adults won't.
The first 10 minutes were interesting because I did not know what to expect. But the wrighting/plot was lame with no surprizes.
The first eight reviewers gave it 2/10 or less. But they missed that this is a kid's movie. Robot charicters CRU 2 is a dog, CRU 5 is a kid, CRU 4 is a selfish teenager, CRU 3 has a creepy laugh, hologram Pops is your grandfather.
The AI animation was in a strange style. 3D objects with static hand drawn surface details, like wallpaper or a vinyl wraped bus.
(Maybe that is common for robots in that time.)
The music track was overdone and too loud. Implying false drama.

My sister and are going to watch Women in Love today, a much admired film based on the DH Lawrence novel, made in 1969. She ordered a DVD of it and it arrived yesterday.

I've always wanted to see it because Oliver Reed is my favorite actor. Inasmuch as he was a total dick in real life, I love his acting. The whisper to a scream thing, he nails. Also, Alan Bates is in it, and my sis loves him. She is looking forward to the infamous naked wrestling scene with Reed and Bates. Me, not so much.

I'll report back and give my account.

Vicious

There's a magic evil box that when given to another person requires them not only to make sacrifices so that they don't die, but when finished, the box must be passed onto to another innocent person.

This one's almost wholly for horror fans, but it has a lot of clever writing, cinematography, and the acting is solid. It also has parent-adult child undertones which are deftly handled, so there's some substance to the film. However, if you're not into horror, you may not want to watch it because there's some serious gore that made even me twist in discomfort.

Horror Scale: 7/10
Non-Horror Scale: 5/10

Dog Day Afternoon, 6/10; Stars Al Pacino and John Cazale as two hapless bank robbers. In 1972 during an attempted bank robbery in New York Sonny and Sal end up trapped in the bank with the bank employees held as hostages. The movie follows the story of the two robbers, the negotiations with police, FBI and various outside people. This movie is regarded as a classic I think. It is very well acted and filmed but what makes it even more interesting is that it is based on a true story which I didn't know until after I had watched the movie. A very interesting story indeed and also very sad.
