Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Just saw A House of Dynamite, about the launching of a nuclear missile at the U.S. Highly recommended. (y) The ending caught me completely off guard and was perfect.
It's funny. The older we get, the more we appreciate good storytelling and suspense in film. The kids OTOH, hated this movie because
they didn't get their big explosion and post apocalypse finale.
It's a shame. I blame superhero movies and the overindulgence in SFX and big, flashy set pieces. Is it really too much to ask the viewer to use their imagination?

I did see this year’s Superman and it is rollicking good fun, a comic book brought to the big screen. Saw the first two Supes movies with Christopher Reeve and a couple of Batman movies, but that is it for this genre.

I often watch movies with a friend and we trade picks. Today was his pick. Usually he makes great picks. Today, he picked … Freaks, from 1932. 🤮

Jeebus Christ, that movie. I have seen it before.

I like to think of it as a social commentary movie on class disparities in the depths of the Depression. There are other ways to think of it too.

I'm a crotchety old bastard now, so I'm gonna give a crotchety old bastard opinion.

The kids need too much shallow stimulation. BOOM! POW! etc. They don't appreciate good dialogue and writing (see the limited series Midnight Mass). They aren't willing to be patient enough for subtle character development and arcs. If it ain't a predictable comic book character or some other already known (and predictable) commodity, they're not interested.

A movie like Poor Things is derided as being for "pedos" and no sex scene ever has an appropriate place in movies. It's as if they have an accute 1980s conservative infection.

No patience, no appreciation for craft, as deep as dinner plates.

I'm now done with my sweeping generalities tirade.

I’m a crotchety old bastard too and I largely agree with you, though sometimes for me — not often — mindless, escapist entertainment is just what the doctor ordered. :)

Absolutely agree. I just wish it wasn't so prevalent.

The kind you don't even bother to hit pause on when you go to the bathroom. I get that.

Fantastic 4 (2025)
Disapointing. Recycled plot from last FF movie. Silver Surfer/Galactus.
Set on a parallel earth, In a futuristic 1960. So has a campy vibe. Not even fathful to the 1960s comic. More like a 1950s B movie idea of the future. Counter to the realism/believability that made the Marvel Studios.
Watchable, but I give it 5/10

LOL I just took a close look at your avatar.

Watched Predator: Badlands last night. The beginning and end of the movie are set on Yautya Prime, but most of the movie occurs on Genna, a deathworld. It's a really new movie so I won't give any spoilers. 8/10.

PZ Myers comments on the biology of Predator movies
I’m also a bit tired of the “warrior alien” trope. Advanced alien cultures are going to be more diverse and complex than the “everyone fights for honor” nonsense that’s affected the genre since at least the Klingons, and it’s boring and makes those aliens into one dimensional characters. Stop it.

I think he's missing the point. These kinds of alien cultures are derived from propaganda stereotypes of our WWII enemy, a cultural slur considered by Hollywood to be too useful and entertaining to discard on the mere basis that it is horribly racist.

The warrior aliens who fight for honour are Space Japs.

American Beauty

I hadn't seen this one since it first came out and wanted to see if it held up. It does. It's uncomfortable, funny, sad, etc. Basically it runs the gamut of human emotion and does so in a way that shows the viewer that no one is ever all good and that few are all bad. It's well written, acted, and shot.

Due to a significant portion of the subject matter, this is definitely one of those films that could not be made today, which is a shame. Art should push boundaries rather than being held captive inside of them.

9/10

The Ghost Writer, 5/10; A Roman Polanski directed film starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan and Kim Cattrall. A tale of political intrigue that was pretty tedious and rarely ramped up to pedestrian. McGregor get recruited to be the ghost writer of former UK prime minister after the previous writer's death under mysterious circumstances. A lot of the movie takes place on Martha's Vineyard which was nice. The acting was wooden and dialogue was mostly awful which is probably why the performances were so bad. This movie got great reviews but I thought it was meh.
