Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Walkabout, 8/10; Stars Jenny Agutter. Released in 1970 the movie is about a young girl and her young brother surviving in the Australian Outback. Their father had taken the kids into the Outback under the pretense of going for a picnic. The father tries to shoot the kids, fails, sets the car on fire and shoots himself. After a day or two the kids are exhausted but they make contact with an Aboriginal youth. The trio struggle to communicate but they make a bond of sorts and he helps them. There's quite a lot to this movie, it's very artsy and touches on the relationship between man and nature, whitey and Aboriginals.

Project Hail Mary. Loved the book and loved the movie. I would recommend.
The first trailer I saw was about the mission. 'saveing the Earth'. Ho-hum, an 'Intersteller' clone.
The next trailer was about the alien encounter. Then I remembered I'd read the book, and liked it a lot.
I usualy prefer to watch the movie first, enjoy it for 1.5 hours, then enjoy the book for longer, and flesh it out.
Most people I know read a book first, then are disapointed with the movie.
Are you promiseing the movie won't disapoint?

Not promising nothin. But,

Loved the book.

Then I loved the movie.

Now I'm reading the book again, and loving it.

Anaconda (2025)

It was fun until it went to absolute shit in the third act. There was an opportunity for them to create a clever, meta fun twist at the end but instead they just went with a linear and generic ending. Also, if you know anything about constrictor behavior it might take you out of the movie. I'd give it a recommend for the first two acts but the third is so bad, I can't.

The movie did NOT disappoint me (and I am usually disappointed by movie renditions).

Return to Silent Hill

The first 15 minutes induced about 20 groans. Normally I'd shut any movie off at that point. However, the franchise is known for its creepy atmosphere and creative visual effects. On those two counts it doesn't disappoint.

Oh, the story. After an opening meet-cute, girlfriend dies and her completely unlikeable douchebag boyfriend goes looking for her in the town of Silent Hill. The town is clearly devastated and condemned and no one could possibly live there. Yet douchebag boyfriend persists. Along the way several characters pop up out of nowhere blahblahblah, horror ensues.

It tries to be sincere and emotionally moving but fails miserably in those aspects.

Horror Scale: 6/10

Non-Horror Scale: 3/10

The Running Man (2025)

For the first 20+ minutes, it seemed like the filmmakers were determined to devastate the Razzies competition. Suddenly though, it's like someone flipped a switch and it turned into one of the funnest movie I've seen in years--for about 40 minutes. Then it takes a dive, comes back up, goes back down, and comes back up again.

It's like there was a brawl in the writers room where half battled to recapture the campy classic 1980s movie while the other half battled to take the source material seriously. Then the fight was settled when someone in charge said, "Okay, we'll do both."

It was worth watching although it's easy to see why it bombed at the box office. Overall I give it a recommend if for no other reason than it's fun but also because it's so radically uneven.

Just watched the latest Frankenstein movie from 2025. I thought it was a bit overlong at 2.5 hours, but I liked it a lot.

What I liked best was the subtle literary, mythological and religious allusions studded throughout the movie. What I disliked was the fact that Frankenstein’s monster did not look like Boris Karloff in the original 1931 movie, with the bolts in his neck, the slicked-back black hair and the waxen face. I had that Karloff toy when I was a kid. :)

I am tempted to write an analysis of the movie but if I do it will contain spoilers, so beware!

The movie in some important ways follows the original Mary Shelley novel but in other important ways departs from it.

The Fifth Element

In most ways this one holds up. It's so delightful in so many ways that it's hard not to like. My primary criticism with respect to it not aging well is that in one scene, Bruce Willis' character does something creepy, but even then it would've been considered creepy. Fortunately he gets smacked for it but it still makes the rest of the movie and the ending disquieting.

There are also some very notable inconsistencies that occurred in the editing and writing that can take you out of the movie.

It's unfortunate that Luc Besson's Valerian was such a bomb because it had many of the same elements as this movie. Had it been casted properly it would've made a huge difference. Had it been, then maybe this/his style of this film would've produced more.

The Hunt, 7/10; released 2019/2020 stars Betty Gilpin and Hillary Swank. The plot is about an elite group of people who drug and kidnap 12 "deplorables" and take them to remote part of Croatia for the purposes of hunting them down and killing them. In the opening scene, on the private jet to Croatia, one deplorable meets a grizzly end when he wakes up unexpectedly. The deplorables wake up in a field, they don't know where they are, they don't know each other and come under fire. A few gory deaths later and the main character, Crystal (played by Gilpin) is fighting for survival. She is ex military and has some skills. A mostly entertaining survival type movie with lots of action and gore as people come to a violent end. There's a message in there but it's easy enough to look past that and enjoy the spectacle.

Thanks for the review. I've only heard things about being hit in the forehead with political messaging, so I've never watched it. I'll give it a shot now.

Good Dog

It's essentially a haunted house story told from the perspective of a dog. It's an interesting idea and the filmmakers pull it off pretty well. It drags at times despite having a short runtime of ~75 minutes. It's solid in the creepy department but at the same time feels a little too try-hard (as the kids say these days). Also, if you like dogs, the main character is the dog, and what's great is that he doesn't seem overly trained. That is, you can't often see specific things he was trained to do. He just acts like a dog might under the given circumstances.

As I mentioned, it's a pretty short movie so it won't waste a lot of your time even if you don't like it. I give it a decent recommendation.

To Die For

It's one of those movies that could reasonably said would not be made today.

If you haven't seen it,
it's about a coldly narcissistic woman so obsessed with being a TV star that she has an affair with a mentally challenged 16 year old kid. Through sex and obviously false promises, she manipulates the kid into killing her husband because she believes he's standing in the way of her achieving inevitable stardom. She herself is ruthless and detached, but not very bright, which is subtle and key to understanding why she goes about doing what she does.

It's funny and clever yet really dark, and satirizes America's obsession with celebrity. It's also sad and uncomfortable at times, which makes for a really interesting viewing experience.

The cast is great and every single one gives a great performance.

If you haven't seen it, see it.

Just watched a silent movie called Die Puppe (The Doll), 1919, directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Stars the lovely Ossi Oswalda, known as the German Mary Pickford. She is enormously attractive and charming throughout, and the movie's worth watching just for her.

I don’t watch silent movies in German. Can’t even understand the subtitles.

The Sheep Detectives. 8/10

A flock of sheep solve the suspicious death of their kind hearted shepherd (Hugh Jackman). This is a light comedy. The sheep characters steal the show although Emma Thompson is superb in a supporting role.
