Why "Chinese Virus" is racist

We do not normally name these epidemics by their country of origin anymore. The so-called "Spanish flu" did not start in Spain. It was just first detected there. It was actually spread to Europe from the US during WWI, especially by US soldiers. The 2009 "swine flu" epidemic was first detected in Mexico, but we did not call it the "Mexican flu". If we had, then we could expect Mexicans to be blamed and harassed for it, even though they are no more guilty of anything than other ethnic groups.

So, the term "Spanish flu" is also racist? Isn't that term an insult to everyone Spanish?

Seriously, Lumpy?

Copernicus explained it succinctly and accurately, and you still don't get it?

He did not explain why "Spanish flu" is not also racist. People in Spain, or Hispanics wherever are not to blame for the "Spanish flu" any more than Chinese are to blame for the "Chinese virus". They are? You're saying Hispanics are at fault for the "Spanish flu"? How are they to blame?

Wow. You're really not getting this, are you?

This should help him understand.

We need to verbally distance ourselves from Trump
Do NOT insert phrases like ‘China virus’ or ‘Chinese virus’ into your think-pieces

Be sensible and think logically about this, for the public good. Every time you use the phrases ‘China virus’ and ‘Chinese virus’ in a news article or blog, no matter how much you disapprove of their usage, you are infecting at least three more journalists who will then go on to write more articles containing the words ‘China virus’ or ‘Chinese virus’. This then spreads further to other media outlets such as CNN, Sky News (Fox News tested positive weeks ago) and salon.com. Before you know it, hundreds of journalists and newscasters are repeatedly using the terms ‘China virus’ and ‘Chinese virus’ which then spreads these terms across the general population, many of them already high-risk MAGA hat wearers. To date the stats are: 2,634 journalists in the US have used at least one of these phrases, in the UK 357 opinion pieces have tested positive, and more than 6,500 blogs worldwide are suspected. If we don’t flatten the curve now, this time next week we could be looking at a global disaster.

Some people have been questioning why Trump’s use of ‘Chinese virus’ and ‘China virus’ is so problematic and it really grinds my gears that I even need to explain this: it just is. Think about it, it’s like calling the 1918 flu pandemic (the Spanish flu) ‘the Spanish flu’! How ludicrous would that be? We haven’t referred to the deadly influenza pandemic of 1918-1920 as ‘the Spanish flu’ since two weeks ago, so if anyone even called it that right now, nobody would know what they were talking about.

It's more that Trump is focusing on stupid shit like on insisting on calling it that rather than on trying to do anything useful.

And Asians are being attacked in the street over this. He's a morally and criminally negligent disgrace.

Who is attacking Asians? Are they Trump supporters? With nooses, wearing MAGA hats, and pouring unknown liquids? Or is it another demographic?

Asian-Americans should grab the moment; the Woke suddenly care about them. They should enlist the Woke to help take on the discrimination they face in college admissions.

"Chinese virus" is a red herring and we need to stop talking about it and discussing when is the GOP going to wake up and hand Trump his Nixon moment regarding treat this seriously or you are fired. 1,000 dead? 5,000 dead? The Dow at 5,000?

They are eager for the Erdogan moment, when Cheato can declare himself dictator. And the Trump Virus will make it all possible.

1,000 dead? 5,000 dead? The Dow at 5,000?

WUT? Try 10,000,000 dead in the US alone. And the Dow will shoot up to 30,000 as soon as the dictatorship is consolidated.

"Chinese virus" is a red herring

No it's not.

and we need to stop talking about it and discussing {snip}

We need to be discussing the reasons why this outbreak happened and where they happen and the conditions that cause it.

As usual "waaaaahhhhh cheato waaaaaaahhhh cheato waaaaahhhhh" will suffice for most on here.

The outbreak occurred in China due to human proximity to their wet markets. The US exposure occurred due to China's poor initial handling of the outbreak and the inevitable spreading of the disease.

The magnitude of the epidemic in the US is being exacerbated by:

  • Trump telling people to go to work sick
  • Not instituting a shut down
  • Not providing a national protocol in place, leaving states to do patch work plans instead
  • Not coordinating the distribution of terribly needed supplies for hospitals

Among other things. Over a million Americans likely have already contracted the disease.
As usual "waaaaahhhhh cheato waaaaaaahhhh cheato waaaaahhhhh" will suffice for most on here.
Just let us know what death toll or level of epidemic is needed before you ponder that Trump fucked up this response. Oh wait, there probably is no threshold for you.

Heck, with things getting out of hand already, Trump is pondering whether social distancing is near the end of its usefulness as his lack of intervention is crashing the Dow every day.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted: "WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF. AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!"

Aides say Trump is itching for the guidelines to be eased at the end of the 15-day period, but realistically there are few health experts who think that's enough time to know whether the measures he announced last week will suffice.
Trump and some of his top officials are growing more anxious with social distancing guidelines put in place to combat the coronavirus, sources close to the White House effort said. One senior official said the President is losing patience with the period of national self-isolation that has frozen the US economy.
The policy of distancing was started too late and Trump wants to end it way too soon. This guy's narcissism and ignorance is literally a danger to our country.

Indeed and these conditions persist throughout Asia (and other parts of the world) and it needs to fucking stop. And that will take world wide recognition of the problem to shut these places down now before there is another pandemic. Right now it is inevitable.

Yeah I get it Jimmy but I'm more interested in addressing the cause and heading it off at the pass.

Yeah, that would be important, but umm... people are dying right now. It is best to stop the existing epidemic and then work on global protocols to help extinguish the next pandemic before it starts after. And at the moment, Trump's action are unquestionably causing harm (read people are literally dying) to America.

Why bother instituting harsh measures to stop it now, when we can sit around navel-gazing and bloviating about how the Chinese are to blame? After all, reading and understanding shit like THIS is hard for some people.

Yeah, that would be important,

It's critical.

but umm... {snip} waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh CHEATO !!!1111 WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH CHEATO !!!!!!!!1111
Another week of self-isolating -- or, for many Americans, mandatory lockdowns -- are raising tough questions for President Donald Trump on how long the coronavirus mitigation measures he recommended will last and whether they are worth the economic pain.

Trump has suggested he believes they may not be.

"WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF," Trump tweeted late Sunday night. "AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!"

Aides say Trump is itching for the guidelines to be eased when the 15-day period ends a week from Monday, but realistically there are few health experts who think that's enough time to know whether the measures he announced last week -- including recommending closing schools, limiting gatherings and keeping at least 6 feet of distance between individuals -- will suffice.

Trump and some of his top officials are growing more anxious with social distancing guidelines put in place to combat the coronavirus, sources close to the White House effort said. One senior official said the President is losing patience with the period of national self-isolation that has frozen the US economy.

It is incredible how many people are willing to go down with Trump.

Maybe we'd be in a better place as far as that goes if Dear Leader hadn't spent weeks treating the virus as a PR problem that might make him look bad. Maybe we'd be better off if he hadn't fired the pandemic response team, cut the CDC budget, and blamed "the media" and "the Democrats" for pointing out simple facts. Now that he's haltingly, ineptly getting serious about the situation, he still insists on being a fucking crybaby, literally crossing out the word "Corona" and replacing it with "China" in a briefing on the virus.

Let that roll around in your head for a moment. When given carefully crafted words to read that would calm the public and demonstrate leadership, Fragilego Mussolini said "whaaaahhhh! Whaaaaahhhh! I wanna call it China Virus and you can't make me call it anything else!!!"

How is that "addressing the cause and heading it off at the pass?" Hint: It isn't. That's a doddering old man clinging to prejudice and trying to exert control over a situation that's far, far beyond his ability to comprehend let alone handle in an emotionally mature fashion.
