Yet another shooting thread

But he was probably not a trained shooter, and he might have just missed.

You don't need to be a trained shooter at that distance. I'm garbage long range, but at 200 yards max with a basic rifle and decent ammo like his, I can consistently hit anything the size of a pumpkin.

Edit: 10-inch diameter pumpkin (to avoid bilby)

I'm not a killer, so I can't really know for certain, but if I was angry enough to kill over a political thing such as being against ICE, I can think of multiple other things that could be inscripted on the casings other than "Anti-ICE" that would provide a conduit for such rage. Also... in ink?
You think somebody deranged enough to do something like this would think logically about what to write on his brass?
No, not logically, irrationally and with rage. Anti-ICE just doesn't sound rageful.
Also, I know nothing about guns... but those rounds look... big.
For longer distance shooting/sniping you want a bigger bullet, because of the more favorable kinetic energy to drag ratio. The Charlie Kirk shooter used a .308 if I am not mistaken. Hell, for serious military sniping they use much larger bullets like .50 BMG (used in AR50) or the even bigger 14.7x114mm bullet used in the Snipex Alligator.
And powerful rifles, even AR15 which uses a small (5.56 mm or 0.223 inches) bullet, have large cartridges compared to handgun/low power rifles because of powder needed to accelerate the bullet to very high muzzle velocities.
Here are some common cartridges side by side.

Could be on the up and up. But that just looks staged....
Could be. But him using a marker or the size of the cartridges are not really reasons to suspect such.
Again, angry... to me means etching into a casing, not using a sharpie. But that is bald faced speculation on my part.
that and the fact they apparently hit the detainees.
That is a more salient point. But he was probably not a trained shooter, and he might have just missed.
Apparently he was shooting at a van, which makes that scenario more plausible.
It sounds like there were a lot of shots and he very well may not have known how to fire a rifle well.

Why is bilby even in your target area?

The ICE center shooter appears to have been another apolitical internet memer.

None of his former friends believed that the “ANTI-ICE” inscription could possibly be sincere, feeling such a serious political statement was anathema to who Jahn was. His humor was deeply ironic, often offensive and aggressive to the point of alienation.

“He was most certainly an edgelord, an irony guy,” one friend said. (Edgelord is online-speak for someone who likes to espouse edgy, nihilistic views). Asked about the inscription on the bullet, the friend said: “Josh was an edgelord who wanted someone to get blamed. I think he tried his best to write something goofy … to rile people up.”

Another friend showed me a Facebook post describing how Jahn had flooded his friends’ comment sections with rape jokes — “playful shock humor,” the friend said.

Jahn’s profile on the gaming platform Steam showed the vast amounts of time he spent playing video games, particularly shooters: more than 6,000 hours on Rust, 3,000 on Team Fortress 2, and 1,000 on Left 4 Dead 2. (He even found time to play three and a half hours in the past two weeks, the account shows.)

From the same article:

On the off-chance the shooting wasn’t what it looked like, I reached out to people who knew the gunman, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. Three who knew him since at least middle school agreed to speak to me on the condition that I not name them, corroborating their friendship with photos and other records.
“I mostly stopped talking to him when he took his 4chan/irony stuff into daily interactions,” one friend told me. “He was becoming unbearable … once he dropped out of college he had no obligation to be social and none of us reached out due to his edgelord behavior.”

I wasn’t able to find anyone with insight into Jahn’s more recent views, something that his friends said was unsurprising given his withdrawal from social life over the past few years.

The guy was 29 years old, and its not clear from the article (perhaps purposely) how recently any of the interviewees had substantial contact with him. They seem to have lost touch with him after college (so typically around age 22). If any had heard from him in last few weeks or months, I would assume that would be noted in the article. A person can go through a lot of changes in a few years.

Still too early, I think, to come to any conclusions about his political bent.

It sounds like total bullshit to me. The guy was targeting ICE agents but hit three separate arrestees? I don't buy it for a minute.

I would not put it past the new FBI admin to cover up the real reason this was done.

He fired, allegedly, 20 shots... so if he only hit 3, that might mean he sucked at shooting.

Young white males, shooting people. So not out of the ordinary. Curious if the shooting in Utah inspired this more of a loner type guy to commit a suicidal act.

Well, that makes me feel better about the time sink I've had with No Man's Sky. 6,000 hours?!

True-ish. But this appeared a suicidal act. Which would then provide fodder that this was notoriety. Time will tell. The fact his social media hasn't turned up much for Fox News and the Trump Admin to plaster on tv about the far left would indicate the guy was a loser and we was done and wanted to leave a mark.

Trump’s assassin was not 200 yards away from Trump, and he had better equipment.

Which confirms the terrible shot lore surrounding him. 🙄

Edit: And that was way more than a 10 inch diameter pumpkin.
