Yet another shooting thread

Getting so normalized to school shootings, the death of one 6th grader after a 17 year old opened fire at a school kind of elicits a response of shoulder shrug... and ponders how to Onion up the incident.

  • local authorities indicate suspect only performed half-hearted attempt at mass murder at local school, "He could have tried harder"
  • Sandy Hook families scoff at "meager" school shooting in Iowa
  • surviving children at Iowa school wonder just how traumatized they should feel relative to students at schools that had real school shootings
  • GOP governor considers ways of senseless inaction to help prevent such senseless violence in the future
  • is your gun violence traumatized child old enough to be told about the Gun Lobby's point of view?

A sixth-grade student was killed on Thursday morning and five other people wounded when a 17-year-old opened fire at an Iowa school on the first day of classes following the winter break, law enforcement officials said.
Obviously we need to arm sixth graders.
The suspect was identified as Dylan Butler, a student at Perry High School, officials said at a news briefing. He was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound by responding officers.

Okay, that's two people he killed including himself. And Wiki sez
"A mass shooting is a violent crime in which one or more attackers kill or injure multiple individuals simultaneously using a firearm."
So posthumous congrats, kid. You made it to mass shooter status.

“Simultaneously”??

The reports I've seen say the shooter has been relentlessly bullied since grade school and the bullying recently increased. The school knew about it but did nothing. If true, I hold the school partially responsible.

In the words of Matthew McConaughey, "those are rookie numbers in this racket".
Shootings of this magnitude happen all the time.

There are several disparate definitions of mass shootings.

[I know it's Al Jazeera, but they do make a good-looking infographic]
As you can see, number of mass shootings varies by a factor of >100 just depending on the definition one uses. One of the more dishonest arguing tactics is to conflate these definitions.

Latest ‘good guy with a gun’ story. Off-duty security guard sees three teens heading to a sporting goods store. They are there to return a defective bb rifle, he assumes they are going to rob the place so takes action, killing one.

They really need to do something with air guns to make then easily identifiable. In a country with cops and gun nuts ready to kill someone if they even think you are armed, it is dangerous to even hold a fake gun that looks real.

Maybe they looked at him aggressively?

So fucking wrong. So. Fucking. Wrong.

All these wanna be heroes ready to commit murder.
They all support a right to carry a gun - but only themselves. Everyone else gets to be shot for it.

Er... The solution to this is to not have "a country with cops and gun nuts ready to kill someone if they even think you are armed".

Air guns are far from being the only things that look enough like a gun to get you shot by the cops - cops who should be aware that the right to keep and bear arms is constiutionally mandated, and that therefore the bearing of arms in itself cannot justify a police response of any kind, much less the use of lethal force.

I know that, but getting any kind of significant action dealing with the real problems is damn near impossible at present.

In the meantime, air guns that look like real can cause a reaction even in people who are not paranoid nutcases, so maybe something can be done about them like they do for toy guns.

Quite obviously a wanna-be. It will probably come down as manslaughter, but personally I would call this sort of thing murder because he went looking for trouble.

I’m warming to this kind of opinion. It’s gun-control, right?
How about for gun control ALL guns must now be painted high-visibility green and with high-refrleciton glass beads embedded in teh paint like the lines on the road. That way, even in low light, everyone will be able to recognize a gun faster, including cops.

I'd just remove the bolt.

Or why not just restrict the availability of guns in the 1st place?

I do not understand why the concept of restricting the availability of guns is so anathema to you.
If guns are harder to get then the incidents of mass shooting (regardless of the type of gun) will decrease. Why is a reduction in the number of mass shootings and therefore the victims such a no-no?
