Government shutdown again?

Oh no! Oh nos! We can't have our government pretending to shut down again!

Because we need some more unnecessary services and spending to blow our debt even higher.

I'm hoping (in vain) the shutdown might provide an opportunity for Trump to downscale some of our runaway federal government.

Do you ever feel tired being a mouthpiece for the oligarchy? Or do you just hate the working class so much?

Identify it. Musk just went through with an ax. So what exactly can be cut? Stuff that seems liberal to Trump? Well now there's functioning government for you.

At least it looks like training is continuing for air traffic controllers this time.

No matter where your ideology lies.

You can rest assured the people who get a permanent ax over this shutdown will not be favored by Trump and the republicans but only by Nancy Pelosi or Schumer. This shutdown will not help Democrats continue their so called Democrat cause if those workers favorable to their cause are no longer employed.

You can also rest assured the people who do get a permanent ax over this shutdown will be just little people and not salary's of the likes of Nancy and Chuck. It is those people causing and not resolving this fake shutdown who are always the least affected even temporarily. As long as they get to keep their trading accounts they will be fine anyway. They are part of the club that you ain't in.

This might be the first shutdown that was followed by a yawn.
That's because most people have stopped believing the hype. Politicians say "there will be a shutdown" and the people hear "wolf wolf".
There have been several shutdowns. It's just normally both sides are doing what they can to minimize the disruption caused.

He is utterly incapable of the sort of analysis needed. The basic approach has been to chop anything he doesn't understand and see how loudly people scream--but that will miss the things that don't have immediate need. The house isn't on fire, why replace that old fire extinguisher? Why replace the smoke alarm? Korea just got slapped with reality about this. And look at how much damage he's already done with his stupid cutting and tariffs.

And note that he's the one blowing the debt higher by cutting taxes on the rich.

Republican Calls for Lawmaker Pay To Be Suspended Amid Government Shutdown

As of October 2025, Representative Ralph Norman's net worth is estimated to be around $57 million. This figure, tracked by Quiver Quantitative, places him among the wealthiest members of Congress. Other reports based on earlier data show lower estimates, highlighting his varied wealth, particularly in real estate.

You won't, but I suggest you listen to this story about someone that was DOGE'ing it for a bit. Their thoughts, their experience, what they learned. It provides a good lense of someone well on the outside who thought they had the chops needed to improve things that the Government wasn't doing right or as well as they could. It is a 27 minute piece, but really worth listening to. I caught this while driving back from Road America back in June.

One of the biggest issues with the "wasteful spending" argument is that Musk barged in, going to save trillions. Turned out, not so easy. Especially when the gross majority of spending (70% of total) is Social Security (22%), Medicare (13%), Medicaid (9%), Military (13%), and interest (13%). Of the remaining, over half is other mandatory spending, which leaves about $1 in every $7 of the budget being the non-military discretionary spending, which amounts to less that $1 trillion. Musk found at best several billions in "waste" out of $6.8 trillion in spending. Musk was blind-sided by the truth that the Government isn't as wasteful as is advertised.

Can the Federal Government be more efficient? Kind of. The trouble it, efficiency also costs more money. Musk didn't even come close to saving a lot of money, percentage wise of the budget. That should tell you something.

I don’t think it tells us anything, because I do not believe Musk ever undertook a good faith effort to improve government efficiency.

Love him or hate him, I think he did try and approach cutting programs from running a business as in "business-efficiency" mindset, with cutting middle management, using technology instead of people. What went wrong was:

Business exists to maximize profit and minimize waste.
Government agencies exist to achieve policy goals and enforces the nations laws. so the government can't cut "unprofitable programs" like defense systems that are maintained for redundancy or deterrence.

In other words a government is not a business that can just go in and cut things because they are not profitable or they cost too much money.

Helping the poor and other "wasteful" spending was granted by congress, congress decides not an administration.

IMO Musk came up against this and decided he had done what he could and moved on.

That supports my point. If he didn’t understand the differences between the ways that businesses and government are run and didn’t put in the effort to understand or to bring in experts on the subject (instead bringing in pimply-faced lackeys nicknamed “Big Balls”, and making them sleep overnight in government offices) then it is clear it wasn’t a good faith effort.

He didn’t succeed because he didn’t even properly try to succeed.

Musk isn't a good manager, can't run a business. He can create HYPE though. Which is why Tesla is desperate for him because their share value isn't remotely worth what it is without all the hype.

Right, we don't need all those worthless programs like inspecting food for safety, research for life saving drugs, nutrition for the poor, paying the military, air traffic controllers to make flying safer, OSHA for worker safety, and more. What a waste of money. /s

So true. And who needs roads? They're a MAJOR expense, thanks to fucking Eisenhower.
