California Doing California Things

The Marines have no way to assess the quality of a shell before firing it.
And yet they advised both the CHP and the state that this was an "established and safe exercise" and opposed closure of the freeway. If every artillery shell is a game of Russian Roulette waiting to happen, how is it safe to deliberately fire them off over a busy freeway stuffed with noncombatants?

The biggest hazard to French and Belgian farmers along the old front lines from the Great War remains unexploded shells - even 107 years after the last such shell was fired.
Yup. In Laos, a country we were officially not at war with at the time, nearly a third of shells dropped failed to detonate properly, turning the Plain of Jars into a barely liveable land mine farm that regularly takes lives even now, mostly kids. In Phonsavan, the largest town in the region, mine dismantling is the largest industry. The American War ended 50 years ago, on paper, but in reality is still being waged.

A cousin of mine died in the same war over on the Vietnam side, unloading captured munitions from a truck. Bad seal or something, it was never exactly clear. He was a social worker, not a soldier as such, supposedly there to do outreach to neutral Vietnamese villages, but they were perpetually short of hands for manual labor and regularly conscripted their civilian volunteers for menial work.

Surely nobody in his right mind would fire over his own civilians, during peacetime. That would be insane.
Not insane, they just don't care about "liberal Californians" any more than the average American cares about Laotian farmers or Vietnamese schoolkids. We are all enemy combatants to them, either guilty of our own sins or those of our neighbors, and they truly do not care if any of us get hurt. If that shrapnel had hit an adult man in the head instead of a car, J.D. Vance would not feel a twinge of guilt over his role in causing it to happen. Tswizzle would give it an eyeroll emoji and refuse to elaborate.

You don't think a historically unprecedented live artillery exercise arcing over the state's busiest freeway is an event worthy of gubernatorial comment? Or you just don't think Newsom should be permitted to criticize the President?

If Newsom has any to say he should be questioning why the he’ll 15 miles of freeway was closed, was it warranted, why was it closed, what was the actual risks. But no, he stuns his mouth off. Insufferable prick,
Who would he ask about that, exactly? The California Highway Patrol, perhaps?

Seems your man Newsom was ultimately responsible for closing I5. Why do you defend this shit?

They legit bombed the freeway by accident and you're still complaining that it was closed for a few minutes? Just how dumb are you trying to make yourself and your political party appear? Of course they closed the damn road!

“legit bombed the freeway” lol, you and Newsom are such the drama queens. “Closed for a few minutes”? Lol, it was closed for a few hours and caused havoc.

Trump knows how to noise Newsom up and that dumb fuck falls into it every single time and just makes an ass of himself. That’s your pick for 2028? lol, Trump 2028 it is then.

Trump 2028 it is then.
This says everythng anyone needs to know about your political prerogatives. California needs no third term dictator. We will preserve the US Constitution long after the rest of the country has forgotten it, and you'll need to bomb us for real if you want to do a fucking thing about that. Which you won't, because you're fucking cowards, who do political stunts like this shit at Camp Pendleton instead of the actual work of running a government.

"This was an unusual and concerning situation," said CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado. "It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway. As a Marine myself, I have tremendous respect for our military partners, but my foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of the people of California and the officers who protect them."

CHP said no injuries were reported, and officers immediately notified the Marine Corps, who then canceled firing additional ordnance over the freeway.

"The CHP has filed an internal report on the incident, with a recommendation to conduct an additional after-action review into the planning, communication and coordination between federal, state, and local government around the event on Saturday, October 18, to strengthen protocols for future demonstrations and training events near public roadways," a CHP statement read.

In a post on X, Gov. Gavin Newsom said, "We love our Marines and owe a debt of gratitude to Camp Pendleton, but next time, the Vice President and the White House shouldn't be so reckless with people's lives for their vanity projects."

Trump knows how to noise Newsom up
It’s so cool to see Rumpers preening about how their genius plays 4-D chess*.

SuperGavin said:

…b-b-but this entire administration is a cock-sucking exercise in honor of Trump’s vanity! The rubes love to watch.

Is "trolling the libs" really worth millions of dollars and a risk to human lives? If so, why? You're shutting down whole functions of government to save a hundred thousand dollars in salaries, but when the vice president wants an N Korean style missile parade, that's worth investing in?

Given the choice, I wouldn't let a Republican handle a household budget, let alone the state or military budget. Your priorities verge on the bizarre.

:hysterical: If your man Newsom (an you!) hadn't stupidly fallen for Hegseth, Vance or Trump's (whoever it was) rage-bait this whole thing would have passed off without a second thought.

Sure, because Newsom is doing such a bang up job with the state of California's finances.

Better than Trump is doing with the national economy.
A low bar for sure, but the comparison is stark. Trump is a moron. Newsom plays him like a kid with an accordion. The suckers don’t even know they’re the butt of the joke.

California is the wealthiest state in the nation, with a 4.25 trillion dollar economy that puts it on tier above even most other wealthy nations.

Meanwhile, how's fucking Mississipi doing, Tswizzle? How's Alabama? Idaho? All you traitorous motherfuckers should be forced to move for a year to one of the depressing states your Party has already run to the ground, and see how easy it is to make a living in a place with a truly nonfunctional state government.

And, once again, Gavin Newsom isn't the fucking Wizard of Oz. He passes the budget, he doesn't make the budget. Just as he approves CHP operations, he doesn't propose them. The paranoid Republican imagination of what happens in Sacramento is crazy, and another good reason never to elect one to the governor's mansion; it's obvious such a candidate would imagine themselves as having unchecked plenary powers if elected.

Newsom had no part in developing California's economy. The California economy is skewed by a handful big tech companies. Your man Newsom has taken California from a budget surplus to a huge deficit, increased homelessness exponentially, driven out oil companies, most expensive gas and energy in the country, increasing unemployment, businesses leaving etc.

Which are here, why?

And no, Silicon Valley is not our only successful industry. We invent novel and lucrative new industries every other decade or so, to our great benefit. The Democrats don't "make" that happen, any more than Governor Newsom "makes" budgets, homelessness, or wildfires happen. But their policies are favorable to economic growth and sustainability. As opposed to the standard Republican policy of lighting money on fire and launching it across busy highways for social media clout.

This just in: artillery barrages are free now! Military contractors are going to be devastated when they hear it...

Against their better judgement?

And no, Silicon Valley is not our only successful industry.

I never said it was, what I said was that there are a handful of tech companies that skew the "fourth biggest economy in the world!!111!!!1!!!" mantra. Newsom had no part in it. He makes things worse!

We invent novel and lucrative new industries every other decade or so, to our great benefit.

Who is this "we" you talk of? Entrepreneurs invent. Newsom doesn't have the brains for inventing.

lol, Newsom's policies have trashed the state. Why do you defend this shit?

But their policies are favorable to economic growth and sustainability.

Plenty businesses have exited California. Even the film industry has turned its back on California. I don't recall many businesses coming in to California.

Army maneuvers happen all the time.
