Yup. In Laos, a country we were officially not at war with at the time, nearly a third of shells dropped failed to detonate properly, turning the Plain of Jars into a barely liveable land mine farm that regularly takes lives even now, mostly kids. In Phonsavan, the largest town in the region, mine dismantling is the largest industry. The American War ended 50 years ago, on paper, but in reality is still being waged.
A cousin of mine died in the same war over on the Vietnam side, unloading captured munitions from a truck. Bad seal or something, it was never exactly clear. He was a social worker, not a soldier as such, supposedly there to do outreach to neutral Vietnamese villages, but they were perpetually short of hands for manual labor and regularly conscripted their civilian volunteers for menial work.
Not insane, they just don't care about "liberal Californians" any more than the average American cares about Laotian farmers or Vietnamese schoolkids. We are all enemy combatants to them, either guilty of our own sins or those of our neighbors, and they truly do not care if any of us get hurt. If that shrapnel had hit an adult man in the head instead of a car, J.D. Vance would not feel a twinge of guilt over his role in causing it to happen. Tswizzle would give it an eyeroll emoji and refuse to elaborate.
