Another Fucking Mass Shooting At US School

Not in the US, but Canada.

Suspected shooter named as community gathers to grieve after Canada’s worst school shooting in decades. Here’s what we know

CNN said:
The tiny Canadian mountain town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, suffered one of the country’s worst school shootings in recent history on Tuesday, when an 18-year-old woman killed at least eight people and wounded dozens.
Police say they still don’t know the motive of the suspected shooter, who killed their mother and step-brother at a home before going to the school, but had previously dealt with them over mental health concerns.
Flags across Canada were lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, and Prime Minister Mark Carney and other national political figures paid their respects in Parliament with speeches and a moment of silence. British Columbia has declared Thursday a day of mourning.
[...]
Police identified the alleged shooter as Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old Tumbler Ridge woman who they said had dropped out of school approximately four years ago.
Police had visited Van Rootselaar’s “residence on multiple occasions over the past several years, dealing with concerns of mental health with respect to our suspect,” said McDonald, the deputy police commissioner.
The most recent police visit was last spring and was over “concerns regarding mental health, self-harm.”
“I can say that on different occasions, the suspect was apprehended for assessment and follow up,” McDonald said. Firearms were seized from the home, and later returned after the owner petitioned for them.
Asked whether Van Rootselaar was transgender, McDonald said that police were identifying her “as they chose to be identified in public and in social media.”
“I can say that Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female and identified as female, both socially and publicly,” McDonald said.
There is no information that suggests Van Rootselaar experienced “bullying” at school related to her transition, McDonald said.
It certainly seems that trans individuals are overrepresented in these kinds of crimes.
Seeing that one or two shootings would get you past the overrepresented threshold, I'm not certain the relevance.

Hmmm, I don't think that's accurate.

Certainly recently. I wonder why that is? And I wonder why main stream media tend to downplay it.
I think it probably has to do with hormone therapy. In some cases, it leads to imbalances. Couple that with other mental health issues, and you can get an explosive combination.
There are always signs. You have got to laugh at CNN, "an 18 year-old Tumbler Ridge woman"
The usual convention when talking about trans people.
Oh bullshit. Prove your nonsense assertions. You can't because it's bullshit. It would be MORE likely that a FTM person would be violent due to the addition of testosterone.

  • Research shows that the majority of mass shootings are perpetrated by men who are not transgender.
  • It is difficult to come up with an exact figure for the percentage of mass shootings committed by trans people, because there is no widely accepted definition of "mass shooting" and it is sometimes not possible to verify a shooter’s gender identity.
  • Experts said there is no data showing trans people are more prone to violence or to committing mass shootings. Transgender people are more likely to be victims of violence than others.

An August 2025 report from the LGBTQ+ policy research center Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles found that 2.8 million people ages 13 and above identify as transgender in the U.S. That’s 1% of people in the U.S. aged 13 and older.

"If trans persons are 1% of the general population, but only 0.17% of the population of mass shooters, then they are under-represented in this group," said Laura Dugan, Ohio State University of human security and sociology professor.

A 2023 FBI report on active shooters cited the Covenant Presbyterian School shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, where the assailant was identified by authorities as "female/transgender male." All of the other 48 active shooters that year were male, the report said.

"When you're looking at the average violence across the community, disproportionately, you know it's white, straight men," said Mia Bloom, Georgia State University professor of communication and Middle East studies.

There you go. Trans folks are far more likely to be victims of violence than to commit violence. And, why was it necessary to bring up the sexual identity of the shooter. Messed up people commit horrible crimes, but statistically, the most messed up ones are white, straight males.

And, why was it necessary to bring up the sexual identity of the shooter
For propaganda purposes.

We know this propaganda is effective, because we see people saying stuff like:
It certainly seems that trans individuals are overrepresented in these kinds of crimes.
And using this propaganda-induced feeling as a premise, then going on to speculate about a mechanism by which the non-existent overrepresentation might have arisen (had it been real):
I think it probably has to do with hormone therapy. In some cases, it leads to imbalances. Couple that with other mental health issues, and you can get an explosive combination.
We here have a perfect example of how a victimised outgroup can be made into a dangerous enemy, whose danger is explicable (and therefore reliable as a fact about reality). Despite their being no more dangerous than anyone else - and indeed, far less dangerous than the propaganda victims who now vilify them.

But of course the consumer of propaganda remains certain that he is a good person, who just wants an orderly and decent society. Such are the mass enablers of totalitarianism.

People look back at the rise of fascism in the 1920s and '30s, and ask "How could ordinary people have let this happen?".

Well, here it is. This is how. It isn't, and never was a secret. Even Goebbels never made a secret of it. But it works, nonetheless.

The antidote is to rebel. When consuming news, ask "which groups does this story make me hate?", and then refuse to hate them until you have hard evidence, and not just an "it seems".

Of course, rebellion is hard. Because hating people is both fun and addictive, particularly when all your friends are doing it too. That's the fundamental basis of sports fandom, and people love it.

"It seems" that right wing propagandists are keen to stoke hate. And the evidence is that this is indeed the case.

Why shouldn’t it be reported?

But it still boils down to a messed up white male committed the shooting, not a female.

No reason it shouldn't be reported. Just seems odd that some people would concentrate on the gender identity of the shooter and not the victims.

Not at a school but a high school hockey game in Rhode Island, guy kills a bunch of people and himself. Very strange

Uh-oh

The suspect in a Pawtucket shooting that left two people dead and three others injured Monday had a history of family disputes, some involving conflict over his gender identity, according to court records. Robert Dorgan, 56, is accused of opening fire at a Pawtucket ice rink, killing at least two family members and injuring three others in what authorities described as a family dispute. Dorgan then shot and killed himself, according to police.
At a late-night news conference, Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves said Dorgan also went by the name “Roberta,” and court documents show his gender identity played a role in multiple family disputes over recent years. In early 2020, Dorgan went to the North Providence Police Department and reported he had recently undergone gender-reassignment surgery and that his father-in-law wanted him out of their North Providence home because of it.

What to make of this.

I know what to do. Sue the surgeon and the gun seller :)

What to make of your apparent obsession with transgenders or how it appears, though isn't certain, that this person may have been troubled? There certainly isn't enough data to draw conclusions about his overall mental status and whether something had changed that was impacting him.

Something that has concerned me as of late: it feels like conservatives are trying to leverage both "grievance shootings" and "trans grievance" to generate a phenomena of mass shootings by trans people so they can vilify trans people.

In fact, it really makes me wonder how much of the current MRA push and how many of THOSE grievances were "stoked", and whether the resulting gender grievances weren't specifically to fuel male interest in suppressing female power

Lots of trans people decide to kill themselves. Some scummy piece of shit in the GOP has got to have asked the question "how do we make people who kill themselves because their life sucks into an Enemy so as to stoke political conflicts?" And the answer they came up with was "get them to kill someone else at the same time".

They know for a fact that it's possible to get people to murder folks in addition to killing themselves when they think, specifically, that society has deprived them utterly, arbitrarily, and unfairly from simple things that would improve their lives.

And having seen that MRAs tend to be eggs and closeted gay people from the ones I've met and interacted with more than 2 seconds, it seems to me that this is something they can push (hormonally unmedicated) trans people towards merely with unkind words and withholding of care.

I wouldn't actually be surprised if we see more trans shooters now, not because of anything to do with trans people but because of how tha GOP is taking away their options in a world where the aggrieved and withdrawn testosterone-laden teenager is encouraged to get a gun and shoot up a school.

When it comes to violence, there is no race, income level, gender, or identity marker that prevents someone from committing something horrific. Actions are individual choices. What bothers me is not just the loss of life, but how quickly people try to use these tragedies to indict entire groups. Whether the shooter is black, white, rich, poor, male, female or anything else, turning that identity into a weapon against innocent people is bullshit regardless of what numbers tell you.

The topic is more narrow than just violence, it is about mass shootings. And if you look closely enough, you will see some common traits with the types of people that commit mass shootings. It is worth studying.

It does say a lot about the individuals doing it, nevertheless.

Yes, angry disaffected people that shouldn't have access to firearms. The in US they are typically, but not exclusively heterosexual males.

I have no issue with studying patterns. I have an issue with people using statistics as a shortcut to judge individuals. Group-level data does not determine individual character. That’s not some radical idea, it’s the same principle embedded in the nearly 240-year-old U.S. Constitution: people are judged as individuals, not as members of a category. It just isn’t always applied consistently.
