Immigration Issues

Trump is like the guy trying to sell fire insurance. It's a really expensive policy, and there are no records of any house fires that were not rapidly controlled, with only superficial damage to property, in the last century.

So nobody's buying.

He's dragged out the records of every minor fire, bonfire, and BBQ, and paraded them across the headlines, and still nobody's buying. And now an intern from his insurance company has burned her own house down, with her dog inside. Surely that has to convince people that they need to buy hugely expensive insurance policies?

Meanwhile, Trump walks the streets looking suspicious, carrying a gas can and a box of matches.

Perhaps insurance isn't the issue at all.

A Costa Mesa woman accused of registering her dog to vote in two Southern California elections made her first court appearance Tuesday in Westminster. The dog's vote was counted in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election, but rejected in the 2022 primary, according to federal prosecutors.

No one said it doesn't happen so stuff that straw in your mattress.

And she was caught and might get some considerable jail time.

Federal Judge rules that's Trump's process of 3rd country deportations are illegal.

A federal judge in Boston on Wednesday found that the Trump administration’s policy of summarily deporting immigrants to so-called third countries — nations other than their countries of origin — is unlawful.

In an 81-page ruling, Judge Brian E. Murphy of the Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts wrote that the government must first try to deport detained immigrants to their home countries — or to countries designated by an immigration judge when the immigrants were ordered removed from the country. After that process, immigration detainees must be given “meaningful notice” before being deported to another country, to allow them the opportunity to raise any fears they have that they might be persecuted or tortured there.

Boy who cried "sure, Jan".

And it can have a cost, also true. But I really don't understand the strong opposition to doing something really basic and straightforward that will increase everyone's trust in our elections.
I didn't mis-trust elections till Rump and the Repugs started fucking with them.
Sure... but your trust in them has lessened, has it not?
I doubted my single honest (blue) vote had any effect on elections in this red distrect.
I doubt anyone's single fraud vote would have any effect either.
If fraud were widespread, it would be obvious. The grifter wouldn't tell us about it. He would be silently involved in it.
I think I've said this several times already, but it's less about how much fraud has already happened, than it is about 1) closing loopholes that could be exploited in the future and 2) getting politicians to stfu about it so we can move on with our lives and not have to hear about it anymore.
There is little evidence that “loophole” are currently being exploited and there has been no evidence that any rational person should expect them to be exploited in the future. It is not possible to silence poor losers.

So why should we increase the cost of voting, especially since turnout is already more of a problem than vote fraud.
Not to mention the fact that the nature of the trust that we have lost is specific to the nature of the reason we lost that trust:

It would make no sense to say "we should do (action not related to lost trust)" to restore the trust.

The actions that restore trust are not "literally going further in the wrong direction". Because Draconian Voter ID does not solve mistrust in election fraud, voter ID machines being manipulated, and difficulty in accessing elections as a citizen, and because it actually exacerbates one of those issues in ways we have discussed a thousand times now, I can only assume anyone suggesting such a thing is being purposefully and willfully dishonest.

I will also note "politicians shutting up about a topic and moving on" is not how "ratchet politics" works.

As soon as we give some "ratchet" piece of shit their way, it's immediately on to fighting for the next click of the "handcuffs" as it were, and they will be itching for the next thing that makes our elections less trustworthy.

It is the giving of an inch that will enable a fight of lost ground through the next mile all the way to that last inch where Emily will be yet again saying "just give up the inch to shut them up about it", all the while knowing there's another lost mile over that horizon.

Why do we allow this kind of destructive, malicious dishonesty to continue to plague our community?

I had to triple check this one.
City of Buffalo Statement said:
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The preventable death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam is deeply disturbing and a dereliction of duty by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A vulnerable man — nearly blind and unable to speak English — was left alone on a cold winter night with no known attempt to leave him in a safe, secure location. That decision from U.S. Customs and Border Protection was unprofessional and inhumane.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection must answer for how and why this happened.

Buffalo is a city that welcomes refugees and believes government should protect human dignity, not endanger it. U.S. Customs and Border Protection failed that basic standard.
This is a very very weird case that makes such little sense.

He was in jail since February 2025 for trespassing and assaulting officers with a curtain rod he was using as a cane. Some level of blindness and can't understand English, and certainly I'm not expecting anyone in the Buffalo PD to know whatever language he spoke. Extenuating circumstances most likely.

On 2/9/26 he pled guilty to two low level offenses. Allegedly he was supposed to remain in custody until sentencing. He is released into or not into CBP custody, depending on who you ask. CBP drop him off 5 miles from his home. They moved there in December 2024, so he doesn't know the area. Nothing in this case makes any sense. CBP response was the following.
article said:
"Border Patrol agents offered him a courtesy ride, which he chose to accept to a coffee shop, determined to be a warm, safe location near his last known address, rather than be released directly from the Border Patrol station," the agency said. "He showed no signs of distress, mobility issues or disabilities requiring special assistance."

I was going to report on that one too.

Look, I think having the same rules regarding proof of citizenship and identification for voting in all states is a good idea. I get that there aren't a ton of illegal people voting, but it continues to be a political talking point, and it continues to reduce trust in our elections.

Disinformation is reducing trust in our elections. Why aren’t the GOP and its media promoting accurate information?
I'm perfectly happy to discuss ways to facilitate people getting proof of their citizenship if it's lost, bearing the cost to initiate the process via taxes, and making sure there are good systems in place when people move or change names or whatever else. But can we at least discuss solutions instead of people just opposing it out of hand?
The GOP isn’t in discussions. The opposition is to their SAVE action and the implicit effect of that action.

Also, I didn't point it out earlier but there is no such thing as illegal people. It is not illegal to be a person, to exist.

To me this shows more to me that some folks might somewhere deep down WISH they could make some other kinds of folks "illegal".

To me, the only behavior that justifies being declared an illegal person is declaring other sorts of folks, any other sort of person, "illegal" on the foundation of "do not do unto others as you would not have them do to you", and "they who proclaim a right to not exist makes it cease to exist only for themselves".

Buffalo chips, euro-invader!
Go back to Scandahoovia and get off the land of my great great grandfather’s great great grandfather!!

My grandfather's bones are buried on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

If you like that song you best be not.

I liken it to having a lock on my house. Sure, I live in a pretty safe area. Sure, I'm not aware of any house within about a 5 mile radius of my location having been broken into within the last 10 years.
A better analogy would be burning down your house to prevent any non-existent vagrants from stealing the food from your refrigerator.
We have NEVER. Had a problem with illegal votes or voters threatening the result of any federal election, DESPITE THE RIGHT WING AUTHORITARIAN BULLSHIT YOU EAGERLY LAP UP.
Yet you are willing to suspend the foundational principles that have made our electoral system the envy of every citizen of every authoritarian regime operating as you recommend. Soft pedal it all you like Emmerz; you’re recommending a “papers please!” society. All to accommodate your paranoia of a Republican boogeyman.

For all his bluster about voter fraud, Elon Musk has been one of the most flagrant flouters of US election law. Now his America PAC has been slapped with a reprimand by the Georgia State Election Board for sending out pre-filled absentee ballot applications. State law prohibits anyone, other than an authorized relative, from sending an absentee ballot application prefilled with the elector’s information.

Residents of Chattooga, Cherokee, Coweta, Floyd, and Whitfield counties reported receiving absentee ballot applications from America PAC, partially pre-filled. According to the State Election Board, the applications also failed to note that they were not actual ballots and were not provided by the government, as is required by law.

I take issue with the very notion that there is an “immigration issue” unless one is speaking of this:

That issue even says it’s an issue, right on it.
And it’s exactly what terrifies the promoters of “immigration issues”.

Whoever the hell “they” (immigrants) are, their record is better than ours when it comes to lawful behavior.

But I LIKE that face! It to me seems more roundly and completely human than the alien angles and shapes one sees in the faces of the ultra-wealthy.

Actually, that face is much prettier but as far as coloring goes: it could be me in my youth. My son’s hair is even darker, as is my granddaughter’s. We most closely resemble my father and my grandmother whose roots were primarily Welsh.

The Trump cult moneyed class is so full of latex that it boggles the imagination that anyone considers that look to be attractive

Why do you think that engaging in intentionally misleading use of language gets you a win? This is an absolutely stupid abuse of words. The only people you convince with this "it's not illegal to be a person" are stupid people.
