Split New York City Mayoral Race

To notify a split thread.
because the Mayor eats with his fingers or something.
Yes, that was pretty gauche. It's weird eating a rice dish with fingers.
You may counter that we eat foods like chicken wings and sandwiches with fingers too, but I would say that a) it is qualitatively different than rice, and b) people don't usually eat those foods during interviews.
If a southern Republican moved to NYC and ran for office (a real-life Arthur Branch perhaps?) and he stuffed his face with barbecue ribs or lemon pepper wet wings, he would also be seen as nekulturny. Why should Rafiq Zohran be given a pass just because he is Muslim?
I have a lot of problems with him but this isn't one of them. So what, it's a cultural signal. It's not unreasonable by the standards of the culture it comes from.

You would do better at making a case against him if you stick with the things that are actually harmful.
Of course, unlike Kingpin, Mamdami is actually limited in his authority to actually make changes in NYC. He is a mayor of NYC, not King. Albany has a good deal of say. It isn't like he can say... stop the opening of an international bridge because a donor asked him to.

Eating biryani with one's fingers? I've eaten many similar meals, like rice straight out of the pot, but I always use utensils, because it's much easier to scoop up the meal with a fork or a spoon, though a knife may also do.
Yep. I'm a pragmatist when it comes to eating, much to the dismay of the pearl clutching Miss Manners types. I eat my cereal with a soup spoon, don't use or own separate salad and dessert forks. I will even sometimes drink red wine from a white wine glass! I avoid eating Chinese food with chopsticks, despite "enlightened whities" around me using them...somewhat skillfully. I recently was made lunch by a Chinese immigrant client who gave me only chopsticks to eat with and to be polite I used them. I managed to grab most of what she made with the chopsticks, but failed miserably when I tried to eat these round, slick black blobs-of-something she made. When I finally got a grip on one, and almost made it to my mouth, it squirted off the chopsticks and ended up on the floor. At that point she felt sorry for me I guess and gave me a spoon, which made things 10x times easier. Unfortunately. They were awful.

Eat traditional rice dish with fingers versus fucking hookers. Yeah okay. At least he didn’t touch any peeling paint in the big beautiful pool.

If you actually saw a biryani made Indian-style, you'd see why eating it with a fork or spoon would be more awkard and less flavorful than doing it the traditional way. You know how people often throw salt or pepper or hot sauce on something right before eating, and cooks therefore compensate by putting less in themselves? "Season to taste"? A similar principle applies, in food cultures where manual consumption is assumed. There are often whole, unground spices or other elements that when eaten by hand get ground into the food naturally and are easily discarded. Cassia bark, whole cardamom seeds, bay leaves, anise buds, and so forth. In short, the final stage of prep is happening as you eat the thing. So there's one last big burst of flavor right before you put it in your mouth, but not everything is meant to be eaten whole. If you try to eat it with a fork, you're going to wind up accidentally putting unpalatable or unpleasant stuff in your mouth. The culinary equivalent of, say, eating a garnish. Hence why a biryani chef reacts with genuine horror to the sight of a foreigner shoveling everything into their mouth with a spoon. You might as well be eating the napkins.

Now, not every cuisine is going to be fun for everyone. If you don't like eating biryanis correctly, then biryanis are best simply avoided. Go for something like a pilaf instead, a rice dish that was designed to be eaten with a fork and that therefore is best enjoyed that way. But if you do order one, shoving a whole cinnamon stick in your mouth or trying to chew through a cardamom seed with your teeth is the likely outcome of attempting to eat a biryani with a soup spoon, and it isn't going to be a great time for you.

I have never heard of anyone being arrested for eating rice wrong. There have been five arrests for touching peeling paint. The "Left" and the "Right" are not the same.

Unfortunately. They were awful.
Because, of course, you ate them wrong.

Suppose you saw a confused foreigner eat a ketchup packet raw, then took a bite of their hamburger, then sucked up another slurp of ketchup out of the packet, then another bite of hamburger. After the meal, they comment to you that "that ground meat sandwich was far too dry, and the ketchup sauce was too spicy." Would you conclude "My god they're right, hamburgers suck" or simply reason that they probably didn't enjoy the burger because they did not know how to eat it?

Not everyone is good at using chopsticks. My husband and son learned how to use them when they were very young. I tried as a young adult but was unable to use them properly. My hands just couldn't do it, but I still love Asian food and all the local restaurants where I've, give you a fork. If you want chopsticks, you have to ask for them. As Seinfeld said in one episode of the old Seinfeld show: "I've tried the sticks. I'm sticking with the fork".

Eat with whatever utensils suit you best, but never criticize those who eat with different. utensils or with their hands, if that's the best way to eat something. Do many people use a fork to each fries, or a burger for that matter? What was this thread about again? Maybe parts of it should be split to the foodie area. 🥗😋

It has, but everyone is now waiting for New York's inevitable descent into Sharia law
Nobody is saying he is himself a Sharia supporter, but he is certainly an Israel-hater and his wife openly supports Hamas.
Zohran Mamdani’s wife liked social media posts celebrating Oct. 7 attacks
Also, during his rap career as "Mr. Cardamom", he made a "song" supporting members of a Palestinian charity who were convicted of funneling money to Hamas.
Socialist NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani once rapped about his ‘love’ for Hamas terror-funding group ‘Holy Land Five’
because the Mayor eats with his fingers or something.

In some cultures, eating with your fingers —or with a bit of bread/naan is the custom.

You should get out more.

I know you are freaked out that he’s Muslim. These days, I’m a lot more freaked out by white ‘Christian’ nationalists who claim to be against sharia law but sure do want to enact their version right here.

Extremism is the issue with any ideology, but perhaps especially with any religious ideology.

I’m similarly and embarrassingly terrible with chop sticks. Sigh….

You mean most white Americans don’t eat …with their fingers. In public. In the US.

I was that way. At first. The first... 20 times I used them? Then, I decided trying to eat rice with them.

I got really good once I started practicing on rice.

Often, the problem is not "not enough" strength, but using too much. Chopsticks taught me how to handle food gently, with my fingers as much as the sticks.

Now, it bothers the fuck out of me when someone pinches bread to tear it. Fucking Philistines... (Yes, I'm talking about my husband). Hold gently, and bend against the crust sharply while pulling (without pinching) to BREAK it. Even soft bread breaks this way.

The right just needed to find a more viable candidate.

I know this is hard for you to wrap your hand around, but I can find his eating rice with fingers on camera gauche and low class.

I don't know why people are so enamored with these third world habits.

I don't know why Americans are so addicted to meat. We consume a ridiculous amount of it.

Like tan suits. The horror...
"Enamoured"...

"Third world"...

I've eaten rice with my hands in the last month, and before I heard about anyone "(tan-)suiting" Mamdami for it.

And like who TF cares about someone being "Gauche" and "low-class" except for the kind of person we all secretly wish we could kick in the teeth?

If we want gauche and low-class, just look at the fucking tacky-ass gold paint certain folks like spraying over everything...

It gets back to that point I was making before about the fact that what some people perceive as the hallmarks of intelligence or capability are in fact more hallmarks of its fakery.

This is one of the reasons why I seek to look a way that people do not traditionally associate with intelligence: so as to disabuse them of their notions about what signals intelligence and capabilities.

I will always seek to violate and hold with contempt that which people inappropriately proclaim as "necessary".

Right wingers are going crazy with cries of "Communism" because Mamdani asked NYC residents to turn their thermostats up to 78 to ease the strain on the power grid.

Doesn't matter that both Bloomberg and deBlasio both did the same thing in NYC and Greg Abbot has done it in Texas.
