Merged Gaza just launched an unprovoked attack on Israel

To denote when two or more threads have been merged
The Israeli overkill response tp 10/7 surely made a helluva a lot more potential Palestinian terrorists.
The multi generation efforts by Israel's Muslim neighbors, to cause violent ethnic cleansing, has had a similar effect on staunch Zionist Israeli people.
And me.
I quite understand why they are bombing the fuck out of Gaza, and I think that they are quite justified.
Tom
Exactly. The Islamists have spent a lifetime turning the Palestinians into weapons. It's not something you can just turn off. I do not like what is happening in Gaza but I recognize that ultimately, it's Iran that chose that path and is causing it.

About 2,000 years ago there was an imperial power propping up a corrupt religious government in Jerusalem. The rulers were living it up while the masses languished. Terrorist kept coming from the poor areas like Galilee and Nazareth, assasinating clergy for being in Bed with the Romans, vandalizing the temple and such. Romans made a show of stringing hundreds of them up on the hill. When that didn’t stop it from happening they would destroy entire villages, men women and children, just wipe the place out. Hasn’t much changed it doesn’t seem.

What could Israel have done that you would not consider to be overkill?
How about not dropping bombs that destroy entire neighborhoods. If you know where Hamas is, fire a missile right up their asses.
When Israel bombs a tunnel the houses around tend to fall into the void that's left. Concrete is incredibly weak in tension, it doesn't take much ground collapse to bring down most buildings.

That is unquestionably where Hamas is, but inevitably destroys the area.

So long as they are not in schools, hospitals, press areas, markets ........
Reality: Hamas will be wherever it causes maximum civilian damage. It's a standard part of their strategy.

I understand you don't question the IDF's actions. But that doesn't mean they are not questionable.

And the IDF willingly gives Hamas what it wants. Isn't that called a win-win outcome?

The current leaders of the PA, aka the governing authority over most of the Palestinian people, have renounced terrorism and are pursuing a just and fair diplomatic solution at the UN.

Stop trying to justify your racism by feigning ignorance. You're not a dumbass, you're just intransigent.
1) The current "leaders" have no power in Gaza. For practical purposes it's two nations.

2) Those leader who have "renounced" terrorism continue the pay for slay program. They have not renounced terrorism.

3) Modern warfare is shooting artillery until there's no detected resistance and then go in with ground troops. That's why European cities looked the way they did after WW2. They didn't demolish all those houses just to be mean.
Even now, the primary job of ground troops is to locate the enemy and call fire onto them. Actually facing enemy fire pretty much went out of fashion with the Civil war.

And, yes, assaults still very occasionally happen. Under the cover of artillery that only lets up once the attackers are within the danger close range. Friendly fire is to be expected. (You take fewer casualties overall by reducing the time once the artillery lets up.)
Given these three factors, how would you have conducted the war?

You are aware that even after being absolutely obliterated Hamas is still fighting. They're not a rational oponents. They're clearly willing to sacrifice every Palestinian life before they give up.
They're rational, they are just acting in the interests of Iran, not of Gaza.

The world expected them to lie back and think of England.
That is just so fucking wrong. The world did not say "YOU CAN'T DEFEND YOURSELF!"

There were questions about the blockade, but it would take about 18 months for Europe to say "Dude, enough!"

Israeli's handling of Palestinians has been harsh. There is a context behind it, but that context is growing on two decades old, which was built on even older context. The younger someone is, the further away from those events they are. They see Israel as the bad guy, because all they have generally seen is that Israel's policies have been bad for Gaza.
Yeah, Israeli policies have been bad for Gaza. Because Gaza keeps making not being bad to Gaza be bad for Israel.
And making portions of Gaza uninhabitable, Netanyahu trying to ethnically cleanse Gaza by sweeping them into Egypt, are these things to be ignored because Hamas enacted a brutal massacre on October 7th? Are these things not going to influence those who've experienced a different Israel/Palestine conflict that older people have?
War has a tendency to make places uninhabitable. Hamas chooses to fight despite what happens to Gaza.
If Israel has polling issues in the US, it is Netanyahu who is dragging it down. The radical that fanned flames that helped lead to the assassination of Israel's own leader who was trying to see to a peace. Netanyahu doesn't want a peace deal. He wants all of Israel or what he views as belonging to Israel. Maybe that is the reason he isn't speaking publicly on how Trump's memo of understanding is not remotely taking Israel's security into account.
It's not that he doesn't want a peace deal. It's that he knows that there's no hope of a peace deal.

Given these three factors, how would you have conducted the war?
Wars are fought with the goal of winning the war. Doing it Netanyahu's way didn't do it. Asking someone how to do something better, when the actual plan failed utterly, seems tone deaf.
You're applying an impossible standard.

Israel knows there is no peace to be had so long as Iran is funding the terror. While they would like to win they know the best they can do is suppress the attacks for a while. And they accomplished their primary goal, they recovered the hostages.

But Hamas keeps shooting.

Israeli settlers killed a Palestinian farmer on his own land, in front of his father. Yes, again

It's the third time in a month that Israeli settlers in the West Bank have murdered Palestinian farmers working their own land and in front of their families.
And what proof do we have of the events?

I note "B'Tselem" so I figure it should be taken with a grain of salt. But is there anything but their words? No. Note that the article says the land is privately owned, the article does not say who owns it. I find this quite damning.
What part of "on his own land" do you not get?
You are taking his word for it, completely ignoring the issue with this article.
He has no word. He's dead.

The article says the information in the registry says the land is privately owned--that means someone looked. But note that the article does not say that the registry says he owns it. This makes it likely that reality is that he doesn't own it.
Again, "on his own land". You're twisting yourself into a pretzel to defend the defenceless.
This is an area where there is a lot of dishonest reporting.

This story looks an awful lot like the sort of deception you routinely see in advertising--appears to say something it doesn't actually say. Multiple instances of possibly deceptive wording--why should I not look at what it omits?

What evidence do you gave that the 70,000 estimate is “unquestionably bad”?
1) It's dead during the war. They are blaming Israel for natural causes deaths.

2) There has been internal conflict in Gaza. Once again, counted as Israel.

3) Fairly early on Israel caught ~4k bad entries. Hamas eventually removed them--but without a corresponding ~4k drop in deaths. In other words, they must have made up replacements that weren't so blatantly wrong.

Edit: 4) I forgot about the friendly fire. Typically 20-25% of casualties, but probably less this time. (Hamas rockets are far from reliable, many fall in Gaza.)

Note that even Gaza (aka Hamas) Health Ministry acknowledges that a disproportionate number of fatalities have been military-age men and older teenage boys (and Hamas, PIJ etc. routinely recruit minors). The data provided by the ministry lists sex and age in their data set. I made a graph of the data released around the time of 10/2025 ceasefire.
View attachment 54254
As you can see, the female curve tapers off in the manner of the standard population pyramid. Those are mostly accidental civilian fatalities - tragic, but unavoidable in dense urban warfare, esp. when the enemy does everything possible to make matters more dangerous for their own civilians, rather than try to protect them from dangers of war.

But there are a lot of excess military-age fatalities evident in the huge bulge in the graph. In fact, males between 16 and 65 account for 50.8% of fatalities on the MOH list despite being ~25% of the population.
And at least some of those aren't accidental--targeting commanders in their home produces fewer total civilian casualties, but means that the commander's families are likely under the bomb.

And while we are at it--not all of those are truly civilian. I'm thinking of the bomb that took out a whole bunch of people that were rushing to the roof. Israel sent warning of a strike, Hamas reacted by ordering the neighbors to the roof of the building. Too slow, the bomb fell before they got on the roof. You're rushing to the roof because Hamas demanded it, you're a conscript, not a civilian.

There were other incidents where supposed journalists were also terrorists.
IDF says Gaza documents prove 6 Al Jazeera journalists are Hamas, PIJ operatives
It's been long enough, they're starting to give the military honors to the "press".

The releases, which continue to be published at a rate of seven or eight a day, seemingly cast new light on persistent accusations that the Israel Defense Forces targeted journalists during the war, lending credence, in at least some cases, to Israeli assertions that they were actually legitimate military targets contributing to the fighting.

In other words, a lot more "civilians" weren't.

This happens every time. Once the world media isn't looking they give their dead military funerals. Civilians don't get military funerals.

1) The current "leaders" have no power in Gaza. For practical purposes it's two nations.

If that's what you believe then stop conflating them.

Rewarding the PA and the people it governs for their renunciation of terrorism does not mean rewarding Hamas for anything.

2) Those leader who have "renounced" terrorism continue the pay for slay program. They have not renounced terrorism.
Post links to the "pay for slay" program. I am particularly interested in how it differs from maintaining the official status of P.O.W.s as active duty. As I recall, the last time we discussed it the "pay" was just regular soldier's wages, not bounties for dead Israelis as the name implies.

Anyway, the existence of veterans benefits and keeping P.O.W.s on the payroll is not an impediment to peace. That's just you getting your knickers in a twist over the PA doing something Israel does, as though the State of Palestine and the State of Israel were on equal footing.

Israeli minister orders West Bank hamlet evicted after hearing he may face arrest warrant overseas

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s finance minister has ordered the eviction of a Palestinian village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that has long been a target of Israeli authorities, saying the measure is a response to reports that he may be a target of international war crimes prosecutors.

“From today, any economic or other target that I have the power to harm within the framework of my powers as Minister of Finance and as a minister in the Ministry Defense will be attacked,” he said.
Looks like yuck, but I don't trust the reporting.

"Long-disputed Bedouin village"--that's most likely an encampment on land they do not own. It's a recurring problem. They're trying to live a nomadic lifestyle on other people's land.

So you didn't read the article or bother looking up anything about the village, you just posted some random thoughts that occurred to you.

Nope. It can be because Gazans tend to congregate by sex and the iDF targets area with males.
Why would IDF do that instead of hitting areas with terrorists?…
Males are in the areas with terrorists. That does not make the male victims terrorists. Duh. Hence your reliance on disparate outcomes as evidence in that case is open you the same criticisms you levy in other situations.
We are not the ones claiming disparate outcomes are discrimination. Rather, disparate outcomes usually imply some other factor at work beyond what's being measured. This case, for example--the chart measures age and sex, not military service. But the excess casualties look an awful lot like the demographics of a military force. We know there is a military force fighting there. What's the least astonishing answer? We are looking at combatant deaths.

Occam got it a bit wrong. You do not only look for the simplest explanation that explains the facts, but you look for the explanation that requires the least abnormal behavior.

By marrying, they were counted with their husbands as a separate family to receive aid from relief groups, rather than being under their parents’ allotment. Several girls also said that since schools largely shut down during the war, they saw no hope of continuing their education.
Did you get this part? The "relief groups" are tacitly encouraging early marriages by distributing aid not by number of people, but by number of families. Now, why are they doing it this way?
Because that's how relief groups operate. They can't operate safely without the permission of the oppressors. Thus they become tools of oppression. I am aware of only one counterexample: the GHF. They operated with an army protecting them instead of with the permission of the oppressors. And Hamas went ape over it. Personally, I think the GHF is what brought relative peace--Hamas was afraid of losing control.

I read the article. AP is not to be trusted over there. A former AP guy admitting it:

article said:
There has been much discussion recently of Hamas attempts to intimidate reporters. Any veteran of the press corps here knows the intimidation is real, and I saw it in action myself as an editor on the AP news desk. During the 2008-2009 Gaza fighting I personally erased a key detail—that Hamas fighters were dressed as civilians and being counted as civilians in the death toll—because of a threat to our reporter in Gaza. (The policy was then, and remains, not to inform readers that the story is censored unless the censorship is Israeli. Earlier this month, the AP’s Jerusalem news editor reported and submitted a story on Hamas intimidation; the story was shunted into deep freeze by his superiors and has not been published.)

And it's a perennial problem with the Bedouin "villages" that keep springing up. Why should I think this is different?
