A sad casualty of DEI/Woke at Cambridge University

You mean Trump’s Cabinet? Few of them, especially Hegseth, have the requisite knowledge, training or background. Except for being white and MAGA, that is.
Well... other than the one who aren't white. But I'm sure those are just blood traitors selling out their own kind of something, right? I think there's even a term or two for people like Scott Turner...

Dig into racism and you will find that socioeconomic forces enforce societal strata by race and firm expectations and perceptions of individuals according to ‘family background’ including and especially race and family income which gave historically been entertained and enforced through racist policies at every level from local to national.
Can you provide some examples of those racist policies, and how they're functioning today?

... So if Harvard claimed it would be 0% this raises the suspicion that they exaggerated the consequences of ending racial preferences in the hope that it would influence the ruling.
I heard a fun theory that the explanation is cultural. Indians don't really care about sports. Except cricket. But Indian parents don't encourage their kids to be athletes. They encourage their kids to excel academically.

And that can, allegedly, explain the discrepancy
Ya think?

Look at the names of the winners in, say, the last 20 years. Note the Indians' share of the US population is under 2%.

List of Scripps National Spelling Bee champions
Impressive! And it looks like the raw statistics understate the degree of dominance. Indian-Americans were winners twelve years in a row. To find the last time students from the same ethnic background won twelve times in a row (guessing ethnicity from names) you have to go back sixty years. Here are the words Anglo kids knew how to spell in order to win from 1963 to 1974:

equipage
sycophant
eczema
ratoon
chihuahua
abalone
interlocutory
croissant
shalloon
macerate
vouchsafe
hydrophyte

And here are the words Indian-American kids knew how to spell in order to win from 2008 to 2019:

guerdon
Laodicean
stromuhr
cymotrichous
guetapens
knaidel
stichomythia
feuilleton
scherenschnitte
nunatak
Feldenkrais
gesellschaft
marocain
koinonia
auslaut
bougainvillea
aiguillette
pendeloque
palama
cernuous
odylic

(There are more than twelve words because ties have become much more common in recent years, due to the questioners running out of words before the winners run out of opponents.)
Hey! I actually know one of the words between 2008 and 2019!
There's only two from 1963 t 1974 that I didn't know, but I at least can figure out how to pronounce them

Spelling bees have become harder. And multilingual apparently.

Tests themselves have racial and class biases.
Sure. And math is totally white supremacist.

There needs to be some means of demonstrating to a high degree that such racial and class biases actually exist.
Bias in standardized testing has been well documented . It takes very little effort to do an internet search to locate multiple articles discussing this.

I know that we all like to believe that mathematics is a ‘pure’ discipline that is immune to bias. However that is not completely accurate.

Yeah, MAGA is happy to include a few token non-whites because it makes them look more legitimate

So you're saying that DEI isn't great, and ends up with token minorities in positions that weren't earned through merit, but rather has an optical effect?

No, that is what you are inferring.

Why is that?

I pointed out that quite a bit of Trump's cabinet aren't white (which you presented as being the only characteristic being considered). And you very kindly walked right in and called those minority appointment "tokens" who were chosen for optics alone.

So unless you think it's a fantastic, wonderful, great thing that Trump appointed some minorities just to increase diversity in his cabinet... You're turning a negative eye on DEI.

You're also essentially calling Scott Turner a house negro. Or perhaps you prefer the slightly more politically correct "Uncle Tom"?

Which is funny, because Uncle Tom was actually a very noble character who stood by his beliefs in the face of abuse that ultimately led to his death... and that has been transformed into a racially charged slur for any black person who has the audacity to have beliefs and values that Democrats haven't approved for them.

I just went to the official site of Trump’s cabinet and I counted exactly 1 non-white person. I’m counting Marco Rubio as white.

Huh, same here! Wonder if it's the same words -- mine were bougainvillea, ratoon and shalloon.

Spelling bees have become harder. And multilingual apparently.
Hey, it was always multilingual -- "croissant" counts! :biggrina:

But actually... those are all allegedly English words now, borrowings. I knew one more of the recent words -- I have a smattering of German so I knew gesellschaft means corporation -- but I was today years old when I found out in English it's a technical term from sociology.

Being wicked is a choice.
Good! If it is wicked to choose reason over self-interested folly, humanity over inhumanity, science over invention, inclusion over exclusion, I am wicked through and through and will continue to be so.
But you don't choose those things. Inventing the baseless strawmen you impute to your opponents is choosing folly over reason and invention over science. When you argue for racially discriminating against Asian Americans in order to make more positions available for African Americans, that's not choosing inclusion over exclusion. It's choosing inclusion of an African American over inclusion of an Asian American; and it's choosing exclusion of an Asian American over exclusion of an African American. In order to choose inclusion over exclusion you'd need to instead argue for increasing the number of available positions. Your implication that excluding an Asian American from a position doesn't count as exclusion because he's the same race as a bunch of completely different people who weren't denied positions, and including them somehow magically includes him by proxy, is folly, not reason, and it's invention, not science. And your claim that what you are trying to do to that Asian American qualifies as choosing "humanity over inhumanity" dehumanizes him.

Anyone who ever wants to tell any student, for any reason, that they do not deserve a quality education, they can go ... themselves with the sharpest wooden stick they can find.
You will not be able to produce a quotation from any of your opponents here telling anybody they do not deserve a quality education. You are strawmanning your opponents -- your speciality.

The only people I've come across in this controversy who actually told students they do not deserve a quality education are the admissions officers at Harvard who systematically put into university records a lot of claims that individual Asian American applicants had personality defects that made them poorly suited for Harvard admission. Harvard adopted this practice to create a paper trail they could draw upon to downplay the degree to which they were making decisions based on race, in order to conceal the fact that they were running an illegal quota system instead of conscientiously sticking to the forms of racial discrimination authorized under Bakke. Of course they got sued; and of course they gave up that paper trail under discovery, so unavoidably it became possible for individual Asian American applicants to find out Harvard had claimed they had personality defects.

If their reason for doing so is anything as phenomenologically stupid as not liking that student's skin color, the language they pray in, or the number of zeroes in their parent's bank account, or any other such arbitrary condition of birth? They have my invitation to add a rusty nail to the stake first.
You have no reason to believe any of the people you are accusing of that actually do that, let alone for the reasons you list. (Heck, even a Harvard admissions officer who claimed an Asian American student didn't deserve a Harvard education didn't do it because he didn't like the student's skin color. It's quite unlikely the reason they systematically did it was because they didn't like Asians, and still more unlikely that Asians actually systematically have defective personalities. By far the most likely reason they put those explanations in their files is that they were simply lying about the personality defects, because lying was what they needed to do to cover up their illegal quota system.)

I am not embarrassed by my commitment to common decency.
You do not have a commitment to common decency. If you were actually committed to common decency you would not have written "Your belief that all Black professors are underqualified compared to whites is exactly what makes you regressive racist trash unprepared for life in this century". LP does not believe that all Black professors are underqualified compared to whites. You did not have a reason to believe what you said about him was true. You made it up! Common decency requires not trumping up libelous accusations.

You should be embarrased by the company you keep and the ideas you consider worth defending.
:consternation2: The company I keep?!? You're keeping the exact same company.

As for the ideas I consider worth defending, let's review the bidding. In this thread I have so far defended the following ideas:

1. Doing math and logic correctly.
2. Not trumping up false accusations.
3. Bringing facts to the discussion.
4. American experience with DEI being relevant to Britain and therefore not a thread derail.
5. It being religious bigotry to set up strawmen against infidels for not having faith in one's dogma.
6. Indian-American spelling bee winners typically having spelled harder words than Anglo-American winners.

Which ideas that I defended do you feel I should be embarrassed to consider worth defending? If what you have in mind isn't on that list, quote me defending them.

And I'm certainly not going to sit here and pretend that anyone campaigning against "DEI hires" is ever either:

1. Not racist
You are sitting there and pretending that everyone campaigning against DEI is racist. What evidence do you have that this guy is racist? And which race is he prejudiced against?

or

2. Not associated with the regime of Donald John Trump, and his allies on the "Right" and the "Left", who have allowed him to legally seize power of an increasingly illegitimate state.
You know, DEI is a world-wide phenomenon. For instance, it's very big in India. They take their affirmative action straight there, with legally mandated quotas, none of this namby-pamby one-factor-among-many business the US nominally goes in for. In Bangalore there's a public employees' association that's agitating to stop the state government from ignoring Supreme Court decisions that put an upper limit on the degree to which local government can legally discriminate against people from "overrepresented" castes. The notion that these employees give a rat's ass about Donald Trump is laughable -- India has enough problems of its own without getting sucked in by our squabbles. The notion that they're doing it because they're racist is also laughable, since caste lines cut across skin tone differences. They're doing it for the obvious reason: because the Karnataka government puts an illegal glass ceiling on people from the "wrong" castes and the public employees would like to have some chance of promotion.

Because I refuse to pretend to be a ... moron in the name of "politeness". These parasitic thieves and assholes infesting the White House have betrayed the Constitution, their country, their neighbors, and their God, and they should all be in jail.
No doubt; but there are an awful lot of Trump threads on IIDB and this isn't one of them.

DEI is racist. It reduces people to a skin colour, making all other attributes irrelevant. One could try to argue its benefits. But that doesn't change the racism of it. Would anyone argue against this? Its also sexist.

Those two sentences right next to each other are pretty damn hilarious. :D

How is it sexist if skin colour is the only property it reduces people to, making all other attributes irrelevant? Including, presumably gender?

DEI is racist. It reduces people to a skin colour, making all other attributes irrelevant.
That is objectively false. "...making all other attributes irrelevant". That is ridiculous. If that were the case, African Americans that dropped out of high school would be admitted to medical school. The blind would be hired as bus drivers. Monolingual Hispanics hired as translators.

This is crux of the anti-DEI nonsense. The lie that it is only about race or gender or disability. People like Dr. Z need to exaggerate the influence of DEI in hiring or admissions in order to make it look like a big dirty secret.

I wonder if English is Dr Z’s first language.
What part of diversity equity and/or inclusion is racist? Obviously, none. Maybe those words translate differently in Norwedish or whatever Z’s first language might be. But in American English, diversity equality and inclusion are the polar opposites of racism:

Diversity is a fact that needs to be recognized. We should tolerate diversity. That’s not racist.
Equality is a desirable paradigm - unless you’re a racist.
Inclusion would be an optimal outcome of diversity and equality. Unless you’re a racist.

Is it not amazing how racists go around calling other people “racist” for objecting to racism?

Here is the critical thing. Terms like "racism" and "discrimination" in general carry a certain weight. In the US they refer to very specific Government endorsed policies meant to segregate minorities from the white population/society. So when the terms "racism" and "discrimination" are tossed around, it feels cheap as heck. DEI is not looking to restrict Asians or Whites from general society, working professions, or schools. DEI at most is thumbing the scale at times.

One can argue for or against the morality of DEI policies, pros/cons, costs/benefits, but to consider it "dehumanization" is fucking ignorant.

The dehumanization comes in looking at some African American candidate for whatever getting in over a white or Asian simply because he is black, and ignoring their qualifications. The med school applicant that busted their butt, got very good grades, did community service, impressive recommendation letters, played on the volleyball team, and interned each summer. All you people see is the "blackness" of their application.

I don't think I am. What I am is pointing out a glaring logical flaw in woke reasoning. Woke is full of this shit. Wokes are as racist as the racists they're calling racist.

I wonder if English is Dr Z’s first language.
I doubt it, but he appears to know English better than me and that is my only language. I wouldn't confuse Dr.Z's issues with logic with his grasp of language.
